looks like my monthly bill would be reduced by 40 a month for two phones on unlimited. That will eat up most of the cost of the phones

As long as TMobile is good in your area, then it's viable. Check before you commit though.

So in actuality I'm now paying $20 more a month for my phone. Sounds like Bs to me. I'm starting to think Tmoblie might be a better option.
I switched to T-Mobile because AT&T raised the unlimited plan's cost and got rid of 2 yr contracts. Service is cheaper but coverage isn't as good. I'm perfectly satisfied being on T-Mobile and plan on remaining. Try it out.

So the Apple upgrade program is the $30-$40/month separate from what AT&T charges? I'll get one charge from Apple and then my regular AT&T bill? This $40 lets me upgrade next year and includes the Applecare.

I'm still grandfathered with the unlimited and don't want to lose that.

So confused

Under the old 2 year contract you paid say $399 up front for the top of the line phone then say $80 a month for your plan which was like $40 for the phone, $30 for access and fees/taxes. If you look at your bill now they dont break it out like that anymore its just the $70ish bucks plus fees.

Under the Apple Upgrade plan with a grandfathered plan you will still pay the full boat bill, there is no subsidized phone cost in your current AT&T bill, (look at it) plus you will pay the $40.75 a month to Apple.

You essentially are paying that 'subsidized' upfront cost of the phone, the $399, out over the year instead of up front except you are forced to also get apple care built into the cost.

No. Has to be on Next or Apples upgrade program or outright.
I have been out of the loop. can I still buy a discounted phone with another 2 year contract? I don't see anything on the site.

somewhat correct n incorrect. yes you can still get 2 yrs contract but it has to be an business account with agreements (not all business accounts are) gets it. my company is in lucky ones and i just check again to be sure i can 2 yrs with grand father plans.

I have my grandfathered unlimited plan from 2008 with my iPhone 6S Plus through the IUP. My bill is less than $80/month (FAN discount), and I pay around $45/month for my phone.

Since this is only the next model up from the 6S, I would assume every grandfathered customer can keep their plans.

That's what I think also- But now that my 2 year contract is up does that mean my AT&T bill will go down since the two years are up. If so, that would offset some of the monthly Apple costs
That's my question too. Will my bill go down when my old phone is paid off?

I have the 6 Plus on an AT&T unlimited plan. I got the subsidized 6 Plus almost 2nyears ago (I bought the 6 Plus on launch day in 2014). Is AT&T going to drop my plan now that the 2 years is up?

same here but i will get upgrading all to 7 plus with another 2 yr. but i do think they might drop regulars (could be wrong) but think so but just ring 611 and see

Well darn. We have the old unlimited (family) plan and so I just called and asked about if my bill would go down due to being out of contract. I was told that because of the fact that it was a family plan, there would be no change in my bill. They then said that if I switched to one of the newer plans, that I could get about a $20 discount in total. Darn. So as it stands from now on, our phone bill will go up about $60+ per month if we keep the grandfathered unlimited plan.

Why would it go up?if anything wouldn't it stay the same?

I just took at a look at. Y AT&T app, I have one phone I've had on the original unlimited date, subsidized phone, 2-year contract deal since iPhone 3.

And another phone on a family share with 2gb data plan that my wife often goes over.
Basically added her number into the account that held that legacy unlimited data plan back when everyone was getting rid of unlimited data or assessing speed caps and other stuff...

Peak 3 month data between 2 phones was 10GB for us, average is like 6.8GB.

Comparing new AT&T plans, with Un-subsidized phones, 10GB data plan with rollover data is about $25 cheaper than what I am paying now...which helps offset the monthly payment for Apple upgrade, and accounts to for existing actual data usage....

Not quite cheaper, but I guess if I don't use unlimited data, I don't "need" it either....

I'll stop by a store tomorrow.

might be in luck

call my buddy rep and he said that:

customers currently under contract will be grandfathered in -- until they want to buy a new phone from the company. Business customers will still be able to sign up for contracts.

so basically you can use your old example : 6 plus lets say 40 bucks a month as long as you want but you want that shiny 7 plus then you have to get next or full price

So if I keep providing my own phone I'm fine?

I'm in the same boat as you. Signed a two year contract last year with ATT, and kept my grandfathered unlimited plan. My understanding is, that our unlimited plan will remain the same, and will now have a bill of $40ish dollars a month from Apple. Two separate bills, one from ATT and one from Apple. Correct me if I'm wrong.
But online it says you have to trade In your phone even if your new to the plan??? I have a 1000 dollar 6s plus unlocked I paid cash. I ain't handing them my paid In full phone. What am I missing

Does the rate decrease when the 2 year contract expires? If so, how is the amount determined? I have 1 line with the grandfathered unlimited and the other line has 3GB.

As previously said before, NO. Even though you are out of contract, your bill will remain the same, so you will essentially be paying extra. The only way to resolve this is to ditch the unlimited and sign up for AT&Ts new contracts. (next etc...)

In the same boat here.

I've been grandfathered into AT&T Unlimited date plan since 2008.

With the FAN discount, I pay $75 a month for an essentially unlimited phone usage.

I'm not sure if I should keep the plan. Buy a new iPhone 7 outright.

But will AT&T give me problems when I activate it? Or will I just pull the SIM car out of my 6 and into the 7?

Not really sure how those of us with the old contacts should go about handling this...

I have the grandfathered plan as well. Apparently the plan won't be discounted if you buy the iPhone 7 outright. So basically, you're overpaying for the old 'subsidized plan' when you signed the 2-year contract for your current phone (assuming that's what you did).

I think what I'll be doing is seeing how much data I've used on a monthly basis over a year and chose a new plan to get a discount off my current rate, then pay for the new phone outright. If you're not using ridiculous amounts of data, I would recommend doing the same and just pay for the phone however you're comfortable (full retail or payment plans).

It just doesn't make sense to pay extra on your current monthly plan when the carriers require you to pay outright for the phone.

Keep it simple for grandfathered unlimited plans -

you're now just paying a monthly rate for service.

The price won't change after 1 year, 2 years, 3 years, if you get a new phone, if you don't get a new phone, if you get married, if you get divorced, if you have a kid, buy a car, or get Taco Bell for dinner.

You're just paying for service. Same price every month no matter what smart phone you use, old or new.

If you want new phone, you have to buy it outright, full price. You can finance the full price of a phone via a number of means including AT&T NEXT, Apple plan, your mom, your dad, your loan shark, your pay day loan store, whatever. You're still paying full price for the phone because with the grandfathered unlimited plan, you're now only paying for service. There's no more discounts and yes, your service effectively went up in price $20 when AT&T discontinued subsidies.

It is what it is.

I have the grandfathered unlimited plan. From what i've looked at if i dropped that plan for the new unlimited plan they offer when you bundle with uverse which i already have i would still be paying more than i am now as mine would be the only line on the plan. Now if my wife would switch to at&t and got on the plan then it would be worth it. But as a single phone with an unlimited plan on at&t goes, the grandfathered one is still the cheapest.

I am grandfathered unlimited. If I pay for the full price unlocked with att. It won't affect that right? I'll still keep my plan the same since I'm not changing my plan per day?
