My wife and I are both using about 13-18gb of data each per month.

I looked around a few months ago but I don't think there is anything quite as good as the grandfathered unlimited plan for me right now. I'm keeping this plan for now.

I was just going to get the new phone and switch my plan to unlimited with the directv offer and lose my unlimited grandfathered plan that we have.
That way my plan goes down in price with the new phone, 3 lines 22 gb should be enough.

Paying $260 a month now for 3 lines, 2 grandfathered and 1 on 3gb, Too much

Wow, my head must've been in the sand on this. My wife and I each are grandfathered into unlimited data on our plan, and I also have 2 additional lines at $9.99/month which we used in the past to upgrade our phones every year at subsidized pricing. We use between 10 to 15GB of data between us each month, but even then it doesn't sound like it's going to be worth keeping my unlimited plan. AT&T has finally won.

Tomorrow night at midnight, will I be able to do iPhone Upgrade Program for the presale? Or is this something you have to sign up for in an Apple Store?

Quick question,

In the Apple Store App and desktop, when going through the steps to purchase the 7, it says "replace this phone on my ATT account" or "buy new iphone on an existing account". Prices are the same. Is there any difference? Which should I pick if I don't want my plan to be effected?

I believe you would have to go into an Apple Store to set up the program. I'm gonna pay in full just to be safe.

Just noticed this but I'm going with "replace this phone on AT&T account" your current phone will still be useful until you activate the new phone. If you were to pick up the phone at the Apple Store they rather you activate it on the spot so they know it's not for resale. You can chose to activate at home though.

What plan would you say is better than the unlimited plan? I use as much data as you. I can't find anything. I'm even adding my parents on my account, but even then, it seems unlimited grandfathered is the way to go.

As long as it doesn't effect my plan in any way, I plan on doing the same.

Just depends on your current plan, yours may be cheaper than mine. Mine wasn't an unlimited family plan, it was two separate unlimited plans merged into one account. A 16GB mobile share at $90/month plus 2 devices at $20 each for $130 total is cheaper than what I pay now, which is $60 data ($30 each) plus $50 for shared minutes, $30 for shared unlimited text, $10 for the second line. Only $20 cheaper, but I've never gone over 16GB of data.

Need some advice on what to do with this new pricing situation...I've always been on a 2 year contract with AT&T since the iPhone 3G and just always renewed my contract every 2 years, paid the $200 or so for a new phone, traded in my old phone to pay for the new one and that was that. Now this new pricing has me so confused...

My husband and I are on a shared plan, both have grandfathered unlimited data, have a FAN discount, and our bill is around $150 a month. They have been trying to get us to switch to a Next account for awhile and bundle with our uverse and direct tv but I've been hesitant to give up our grandfathered data plan.

So can anyone dumb down for me what our options are for upgrading and are we pretty much going to be forced to finally switch to the Next plan? We will both be getting new phones...so is that essentially just going to add on another $30-40 per phone to our monthly bill now?

That is our situation as well. Grandfathered unlimited data, FAN discount, and our bill is $138/month. I called AT&T yesterday and was told that since we had a FAMILY grandfathered unlimited plan, that the price would not change. So yes, in effect, we are being charged $20 ish extra dollars for having the old plan. They offered me some options in the new family share plans, which would actually save us about $20, which would help offset the cost of the new iPhones. We don't use tons of data about 8-9 for me and 4-5 for my wife, I just liked having the old plan.

I may investigate seeing if there's a discount for bundling with DTV, but as someone said above, AT&T may have finally 'won' in getting me (and others it seems), off of the old grandfathered plan. An extra $240/year for that plan could easily be used somewhere else, especially since from now on, we will have the extra cost for phones each month.

So when I buy on Apple.com pre order and pick att full price unlocked it won't affect my plan at all right? Also anyone who has ordered what are the prompts after it says that.

I just did the math if I wanted to get a new 128 GB iPhone 7 Plus ($869):

- keep current unlimited data, grandfathered, plan ($90) and pay ATT Next an extra $36 a month for the phone: $126 / month
- switch to new plan and sign up for 10 GB of data, I average between 8-9 GB a month ($100) and an extra $36 a month for the phone: $136 / month

either way my cost is going up. for my current iPhone 6 I paid $400 upfront, and if divided by the 24 months that I've had it, I technically paid an extra $17 a month. so my previous monthly charge was really $107. if I want the new iPhone 7 Plus it will cost me an extra $19 a month.

I don't think next plan actually makes any changes to your existing plans. I remember looking at it last year briefly, and it was going to let me keep my unlimited data grandfathered family plan. I just tried to upgrade a spare line to a 6s+ using next and it allowed me to keep all my service the same.

correct. except the monthly cost increases since you're paying more for the phone and service.

It's cheaper to sell your iPhone 6s Plus unlocked and then use that money to buy an unlocked iPhone again. This way you don't lose your data plans grandfathered. Att next doesn't even give you an unlocked phone and then you have to trade it in? Am I correct?

You won't lose your unlimited data on next

I think as long as you just pay off the balance at the end you won't need to trade in because you have bought the phone outright at that point

Isn't that more costly than flat out buying? Also it won't be unlocked
I haven't done it yet, but it's basically just spreading out payments with a 0% loan. I would assume after it's been paid off, you would be able to get ATT to unlock your phone as you can do now

Hmmm I thought when they offered it to me before they said it was unlimited everything but I would lose the grandfathered data (I would still have unlimited data but I guess not if we ever cancelled our uverse or direct tv)...but maybe that was an option for bundling with uverse and not Next. I'll have to call and see what the deal is today now. I know whatever it was saved at least $20 a month so might have to look into it now that we are going to have to pay extra for these new phones monthly

Keep it simple for grandfathered unlimited plans -

you're now just paying a monthly rate for service.

The price won't change after 1 year, 2 years, 3 years, if you get a new phone, if you don't get a new phone, if you get married, if you get divorced, if you have a kid, buy a car, or get Taco Bell for dinner.

You're just paying for service. Same price every month no matter what smart phone you use, old or new.

If you want new phone, you have to buy it outright, full price. You can finance the full price of a phone via a number of means including AT&T NEXT, Apple plan, your mom, your dad, your loan shark, your pay day loan store, whatever. You're still paying full price for the phone because with the grandfathered unlimited plan, you're now only paying for service. There's no more discounts and yes, your service effectively went up in price $20 when AT&T discontinued subsidies.

It is what it is.
THANKS!!! Clear concise and a good chuckle to boot! Great way to start the day
