Wow, my head must've been in the sand on this. My wife and I each are grandfathered into unlimited data on our plan, and I also have 2 additional lines at $9.99/month which we used in the past to upgrade our phones every year at subsidized pricing. We use between 10 to 15GB of data between us each month, but even then it doesn't sound like it's going to be worth keeping my unlimited plan. AT&T has finally won.
Tomorrow night at midnight, will I be able to do iPhone Upgrade Program for the presale? Or is this something you have to sign up for in an Apple Store?
Quick question,
In the Apple Store App and desktop, when going through the steps to purchase the 7, it says "replace this phone on my ATT account" or "buy new iphone on an existing account". Prices are the same. Is there any difference? Which should I pick if I don't want my plan to be effected?

I believe you would have to go into an Apple Store to set up the program. I'm gonna pay in full just to be safe.

Just noticed this but I'm going with "replace this phone on AT&T account" your current phone will still be useful until you activate the new phone. If you were to pick up the phone at the Apple Store they rather you activate it on the spot so they know it's not for resale. You can chose to activate at home though.
As long as it doesn't effect my plan in any way, I plan on doing the same.
Need some advice on what to do with this new pricing situation...I've always been on a 2 year contract with AT&T since the iPhone 3G and just always renewed my contract every 2 years, paid the $200 or so for a new phone, traded in my old phone to pay for the new one and that was that. Now this new pricing has me so confused...
My husband and I are on a shared plan, both have grandfathered unlimited data, have a FAN discount, and our bill is around $150 a month. They have been trying to get us to switch to a Next account for awhile and bundle with our uverse and direct tv but I've been hesitant to give up our grandfathered data plan.
So can anyone dumb down for me what our options are for upgrading and are we pretty much going to be forced to finally switch to the Next plan? We will both be getting new phones...so is that essentially just going to add on another $30-40 per phone to our monthly bill now?
I don't think next plan actually makes any changes to your existing plans. I remember looking at it last year briefly, and it was going to let me keep my unlimited data grandfathered family plan. I just tried to upgrade a spare line to a 6s+ using next and it allowed me to keep all my service the same.
Well. Yes that's rightcorrect. except the monthly cost increases since you're paying more for the phone and service.
You won't lose your unlimited data on nextIt's cheaper to sell your iPhone 6s Plus unlocked and then use that money to buy an unlocked iPhone again. This way you don't lose your data plans grandfathered. Att next doesn't even give you an unlocked phone and then you have to trade it in? Am I correct?
Yes but won't it be locked and I'll have to trade it in every year and basically be leading a phoneYou won't lose your unlimited data on next
Isn't that more costly than flat out buying? Also it won't be unlockedI think as long as you just pay off the balance at the end you won't need to trade in because you have bought the phone outright at that point
I haven't done it yet, but it's basically just spreading out payments with a 0% loan. I would assume after it's been paid off, you would be able to get ATT to unlock your phone as you can do nowIsn't that more costly than flat out buying? Also it won't be unlocked

THANKS!!! Clear concise and a good chuckle to boot! Great way to start the dayKeep it simple for grandfathered unlimited plans -
you're now just paying a monthly rate for service.
The price won't change after 1 year, 2 years, 3 years, if you get a new phone, if you don't get a new phone, if you get married, if you get divorced, if you have a kid, buy a car, or get Taco Bell for dinner.
You're just paying for service. Same price every month no matter what smart phone you use, old or new.
If you want new phone, you have to buy it outright, full price. You can finance the full price of a phone via a number of means including AT&T NEXT, Apple plan, your mom, your dad, your loan shark, your pay day loan store, whatever. You're still paying full price for the phone because with the grandfathered unlimited plan, you're now only paying for service. There's no more discounts and yes, your service effectively went up in price $20 when AT&T discontinued subsidies.
It is what it is.
I don't remember my price going up with the subsidies going away.THANKS!!! Clear concise and a good chuckle to boot! Great way to start the day
