has anyone researched as to why this is happening
limited ram can't be the cause as I can open 20 tabs on my 5 year old lenovo netbook having 1gb ram with win xp installed.

Full operating systems have a "swap" partition on their harddrive for storing information like tabs when the RAM runs out of memory. Apparently IOS devices don't have that.

iOS 7.1b4 did not resolve this issue

Even after upgrading my iPad Air to iOS 7.1b4, Safari along with other applications were still crashing. This is getting really frustarting as I feel like I cannot use my iPad for what it was intended for.

Old issue, but are you really surprised OP?

Most tech support people just read off a script or have minimal technical knowledge.

If they had any more they'd get a better job that didn't have to deal with whining people.

I can't understand .... There are people absolutely happy with iOS 7 beta and other saying that doesn't solve any problem.

It's VERY easy to understand. There are people NOW claiming that safari is A-OK for them, and that they don't experience any crashes. Just noodling it through, the same people who are sensitive to safari issues are still seeing some subset of issues still remaining. Those who see safari and iOS7 as A-OK now, see no issues with the latest Beta.

You always seem to defend the state of iOS7 now, so I'm guessing you would see the latest Beta as the Bee's knees as well.

iOS 7.1 Beta will still have issues, obviously. And I'm pretty sure you will still be able to go to certain sites, perform simple operations, and have safari crash. Maybe even apple.com, like it does today.

I'm on 7.0.4 and went I use Safari I resize webpages frequently to zoom in which triggers Safari to crash. I think people who don't resize as much probably don't see as many crashes. It might really matter how to use your iPad.

Maybe I need to stop holding it the wrong way. :p

People also get subconsciously conditioned to avoid the tasks that would cause an error. Scroll quickly before the page completely renders? In ios6, I used to do it all the time. But in ios7, I'm conditioned to NOT do that. Subsequently, I have fewer crashes in ios7 now that when I first upgraded. Yet I have confirmed that if I go back and do my quick scroll on several sites with 7.0.4, it still blows up consistently.

I am conditioned exactly as you described. I avoid quick scrolls because of what happens... Crash! Well said.

I am fed up with iOS7 on my iPad Air. I don't have a problem with iOS7 in general, its the bugs that really irritate me. Safari crashing ALL THE TIME is ridiculous. I also hate that the tabs constantly refresh so I have to try and find where I was on the page previously. I never had any of these problems on my iPad 3 running iOS6. Browsing the web is on of the more basic functions you would expect it to perform. Certain app icons go darker randomly and only go back to their correct colour when opened. Using the gesture to bring up the multitasking sometimes causes the icons to go into jiggle mode.

I haven't noticed Safari crashing ONCE on my iPhone 5 or iPad Mini, however I do browse on them a lot less.

My issue is, even if 7.1 fixes these issues, months of ownership of the Air has been a very degraded experience. Browsing the web on the Air is a much less enjoyable experience than I used to have on my iPad 3. However I am reading that the crashes still exist in 7.1 so I'm not too hopeful of a full resolution and really do believe now that the lack of ram is a contributing factor.

Don't get me wrong I'm not throwing my toys out of the pram and declaring a move to Android. I do however expect a seamless browsing experience on the latest model of an expensive Apple product. Not impressed and I am generally a big fan of Apple's products.

iOS 7.1 (as of beta 4) LARGELY (I really do mean for the most part) addresses the Safari crashing issue. It DOES NOT address the tab reloading issue.

Sigh that's disappointing. I read large articles, sometimes with many tabs open, on and off over the duration of an evening. Having to find where you were on the page previously really sucks.

Another example is shopping online and you are halfway down a huge list of items only for it to reload the tab sending you right back to the top.

The Air solved my main iPad 3 issues by being less heavy and thinner but at the same time introduced a much poorer browsing experience.

The lesson is that you always wait 4 - 6 months after a product release before purchasing it. If you look back over past releases on most Apple products, you will see there were issues (especially with completely new designs). Don't be a beta tester and you will be much happier :D.

It's very Apple... Given and taketh away...

I am what you would call an early adopter (of all different types of tech). So hardware/software problems often come with the territory. Waiting 4-6 months would feel like buying older tech to me.

I don't have any problems with the actual iPad Air (in fact its lovely), I'm more amazed at the fact that Apple have failed at something as simple as browsing the web. There really isn't any excuse for that and I don't think anyone should be defending them.

Tell me about it

Sounds like all of you guys will benefit from getting the iPad Pro.:D

Or the next generation of the iPad. Both will have a minimum of 2 gigs of RAM, and all these tab reload issues will magically go away. And yet some here will still claim the remaining tab reload issues on the air and rMini are NOT RAM related.

Sigh!

I actually disagree with that second statement. I've seen far fewer tab reloads in Safari on 7.1 b4. So I'd say that issue was definitely addressed. It may not be perfect, but it's certainly a noticeable improvement for me.

Slightly improved is not fixed in the slightest.

I still get reloads with just two tabs open, especially if any apps are in the background.

Well that's not true, but I see your point. :)

I also get frequent crashes on my Air, especially using Safari. I hold it mostly portrait and do zoom in which seems to cause it to crash often - even on Apple website.

I just turned on 'automatically send diagnostics' in Settings-General-About so I can help flood the data gathering.

Strange you should mention that. I have an iPad 2 and a rMini running 7.0.4 that crash under a zoom in and zoom out only condition. But it's not Safari only as I installed Chrome and it does the same thing and I get a low memory warning.

Are we sure that it is a RAM quantity issue? I only ask because I still have a hard time believing that high end, graphically intense games can run for hours on end with rocket speeds and no issues yet a web browser with a few tabs open brings the RAM to its knees? Really?

I'm not denying there is a safari problem but I'm not sold on it being The amount of RAM. It's very possibly how the RAM is managed though. I can get on board with that a lot easier than the quantity theory.
