Can someone please explain what the name “edition” means?

In my experience, the word “edition” always needs a qualifying word ahead of it - something that describes what kind of edition it is: “deluxe edition,” “sport edition,” “2017 edition,” etc.

Why would Apple call it “iPhone Edition”?
Special Edition/Anniversary Edition/Premium Edition/ourmarketingteamthinksitsoundscool Edition

If it's called the Edition does that mean Apple will keep the 3 model's going forward and this isn't just a one off? Isn't that going to make it more difficult to set it apart next year and so on?

Just a moniker signifying high end like the watch, no actual meaning

Hmm, I wonder what this could be.

This will be like Glance Screen like Nokia's have had for donkeys years. You see the clock when the, screen is off and you put you hand near the screen and it turns on and shows the clock and selected notifications.

The rumored 5.8" slim bezel screens are accurate, as were the display part leaks posted here in the forums about a week ago.
Long shot, but do you happen to know of the oled panel will be pentile? Or have Apple pushed for RGB standard layout?

Anyone curious what the 2018 iPhone will be like? Is it going to be like the iPhone Edition, but with improved internals? Or a less complicated design like the iPhone 7 but with less bezels on the top and bottom.

How will the 'cheaper' models work out? No more $649 iPhones?

This wasn't made clear to me right now, and seems to still be in a determination phase based on sales this year. As stated above, there may be a potential move in 2018 to a two name system, wherein it would be "iPhone" and "iPhone Edition", similar to how we now have "iPad" and "iPad Pro". This would seem to be somewhat supported by the discontinuation of the iPad Mini, which is the last real straggler in the iOS realm.

You still don't know it.

No offense to the OP, but their "reliable inside source" still doesn't make it official.

As the initial post says, believe it or don't. I'm simply posting information from a source of mine, and it may or may not be 100% accurate. I'm simply conveying the information I've received as a benefit to others here.

I didn't get any specifics on the OLED tech, nor was OLED itself specifically mentioned. However, the display parts leaked here in the forum specifically were said to be legitimate. If someone has a link to that thread and the user who posted it handy, please provide it and I'll edit in a credit to them regarding the screens.

That's fine. I understand that, and for what it's worth, I believe that everything you've said is extremely likely. I'm just reminding people that it is still just another set of rumours until it comes from Apple themselves.

Promotion? True tone display?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I got the idea that true tone wasn't much of a hit, and therefore won't be emphasized as much in the future. There wasn't a specific mention of it with any of these, but at the same time I wouldn't rule it out entirely.

But with the Edition, you are getting a faster processor, better screen and facial recognition so it qualifies as an Edition flagship model.

I'm personally curious to see how much faster the processor is - whether it'll be a faster version of the A11, or a jump right to the A11X. I didn't get details aside from it being faster.

This is true. It's also coming from a source and being reiterated second hand, so just like in any example of info being shared, there may be some inaccuracies simply due to it passing through a few people.

Who's your "inside source?"

See the bottom of the first post.

Pretty run of the mill features really not flagship material but then again this is Apple after all.

I'd make an educated guess at an overclocked a11, I think the X chips tend to be overclocked/ extra core versions of the CPU with meatier GPUs and no ram on the chip - sounds like a tall order to fit in a phone, whereas an overclocked standard chip can yield reasonable performance gains (see iPad mini series vs equivalent iPhone)
