Am I the only one that was dumb enough to watch the entire video only to have the author of the video state that the lens cover is INEED sapphire, although not of the same quality as the tissot watch.

You mean like the thread title indicated?

End of the day who cares, but video was good. Should add a better title as I want initially going to click.

when you get the first scratch, you will do.

I just can't believe that the 256gb phone having less than 256gb usable operator space hasn't come up in this whole technobabble debate. As with the other capacity phones...

that was talked about years and years ago when the capasity was small and someone actually cared about it. Now they have it on the area of small printed text. check the number 1. on the bottom of the page.

many factors also includes the way the space is calculated. 256gb is only the marketing term.

So what?

This is an integrity thing. Specifically, Apples lack of it.

Maybe. But when have they lied about it? Apple's specs says Sapphire Crystal Lens Cover, NOT a Sapphire Lens. See for yourself on their website that compares the current line up (cut and paste below). Even the Waybackmachine indicates nothing has changed in their language. See for yourself. https://web.archive.org/web/20130911221855/http://www.apple.com/iphone/compare/ I don't think they covered up anything deliberately. It was stated all along. We choose to hear/see what we want. IE "Sapphire, hard, must be good, I gotta have it." Anyways it is what it is. Enjoy your current phone and the photos it takes.

A lot of people here need to take chemistry/geology/physics classes before they open their mouths. The lens cover is actually BETTER because it has "impurities". Extremely pure sapphire is very reflective. That's why the stainless steel Watch face is a little harder to read in full sun than the aluminum. The fact that Apple is able to achieve a sapphire lens cover that is basically as non reflective as glass but significantly more scratch resistant is a WIN not a fail. The purpose of the lens cover isn't to be a pristine gemstone. It's to let in light as purely as possible and to protect the inner elements of the lens. Apple's cover is essentially *perfect* for that task as can be. No matter how many people on MacRumors say "romg zomg the qualities will never be the same".

The selling point of sapphire glass is that scratch resistance. Otherwise, there is no need to mention it. The expectation is that it performs the same as that watch face in terms of scratching. It does not. I see our point on reflectivity and appreciate the compromise Apple made. This, however, does not explain the same quality being used on the home button. Further, Apple should be clear in its reference to sapphire if the expectation of consumers is going to be different than what they implemented.

Dont waste your breath. Some people want to complain for the sake of complaining.

This makes ZERO difference to anyone; and there was no possible way they were using real hunks of 100% sapphire for cost and the fact that pure sapphire is INCREDIBLY fragile being so hard.

One drop would be a ton of cracked camera lenses. Same reason they ditched the sapphire screen idea among other things.

And it's not false advertising. You "aluminum" devices are not 100% aluminum; more like 90% with iron, nickel and other metals. An alloy. No outrage there calling it aluminum body. Alloys are used throughout industry and still called their major element in naming. Look at chocolate, chocolate is nowhere near 100% chocolate as it'd taste bad but still all named chocolate; whether it is 40% cocoa or 70% cocoa.

People need to pull their thumbs out of their posteriors and find something better to do with their lives than nitpick and complain. Please do return your iphones in the 14 day period if it is THAT big of a deal and move on.

We expect the same quality found in the watch face since that is the implied quality by even mentioning sapphire glass. I sure hope the screen on the iwatch isn't this cheap stuff.

Every phone I'll had regardless if used with or without a case. I never scratched the camera glass. I get it that it can happen.

I just feel some people complain about the dumbest things sometimes just to complain.

newer iphones the camera is bulging alot and easier to get hits before the cover.

So the iPhone 7 camera lens is just like the 5s, 6, and 6s.

So why didnt those complaints come up last year? Or 2014? Or 2013?

This year, this forum seems to be particularly OCD-filled....or the people need to find every single non-issue in the new phone, so they can jerk off on their heavenly iPhone next year.

you all need to go watch a sporting match, have a beer or smoke a joint. You're all worked up over glass. Sheesh, I wish my life was as easy as all of yours where glass consumed my mind so much. use the phone or don't, move on, god, sound like a bunch of little girls(no offense ladies)

Maybe if you stepped up and stopped rolling over, your life wouldn't be hard. But I guess being a sloth on the sofa while smoking and drinking is the easy way out for you, the one you always take.

disappointing and definitely making me think twice about laying my phone down on a table etc. You'd think the fact that the camera lens is exposed that Apple would at least go the full whack with good quality sapphire. Then again how many threads do you see or people complaining about a scratched lens?

It's called a case, get one.

Many. Most. Watch for the class action lawsuit.
Nah. A vocal minority at most. I've never had an issue with an iPhone lens cover and the one time I had one get scratches (iPhone 4) Apple replaced the lens cover for $30 (it was way out of warranty).

Just because someone doesn't care doesn't mean they're "rolling over". This is the same lens cover, as I understand it, as it's been in the past; never personally have had an issue with the covers so I genuinely don't care. Still the phone I want with the features I want. I don't care if it's a sapphire lens cover or a piece of plastic as long as it gets the job done.

If you want to exercise your rights as a consumer then go for it; don't try to stand on a soapbox and pretend like you're advocating for the rest of us too, because you're not.

you apparently take things to literal, and you indeed need a joint. And no not a sloth, you can smoke weed drink beer, and stay fit and lead an awesome life. And way to do exactly what i thought, continue to be tooly! 'grats

Also, FYI we're talking about phone glass, not life issues. just syain'

Over the years, and off the top of my head;

The iPhone 4 antenna
The iPhone 3g/S (can't remember which, maybe both) moisture sensors voiding warranty

I was only personally effected by the antenna thing and I got a free bumper (though I purchased a bumper myself because I wanted one).

iPhone 7 buzzing popping noises from CPU. Reason why I returned it.

You either didn't watch your own video or you're completely incapable of understanding it.
Guess you are the minority here because everyone agrees with me in this topic.

The reason the lens fractures in his tests is because the lens is a laminate. It is still as hard as a 9 but putting pressure on the lens will fracture the layers. Sapphire is extremely brittle and can shatter very easily.

Again, it's mostly glass with a thin layer of sapphire. Stop trying to defend the iPhone when they cheeped out and not put a full sapphire lens.

Please watch the video again.

Yeah..i just saw that via youtube. It's coated...not fully sapphire..sneaky apple.
[doublepost=1475343953][/doublepost]
Not all business companies are truthful.

EDIT: Actually, sapphire is the outer part and the lens is the internal part...at least that what's the guy said.

No, the lens is part of the camera assembly. The cover is literally a cover that is part of the phone case. The cover has a coating to improve refractive index, as stated in the video.

To many people watching the video with their confirmation bias cranked to 11.

You watch it again. Laminate Sapphire on glass.

You gotta move on man ... this obsession ain't a healthy lifestyle.

If you're in Canada, I'll give you the name of an active class-action law firm who'll take your complaint to the seat of God, if they have to.

I like apple fine but im not going to put them on a pedestal or pretend they are any different than any other company. If an apple product meets my standard for quality i keep it. If not i return it. What i dont do is try to minimize their shortcomings or act like inferior quality is some kind of feature.

I don't get all the romanticization of Apple's once excellent quality. When was that, exactly? I've been around their products at least a couple decades and I've never seen it. Every product has been full of compromises. Some have been pure crap, like a couple generations on Nano. Today's products are pretty good, for the most part. They are still heavily compromised, but Apple does a pretty good job bringing multiple facets together into a coherent user experience.

I'm not asking you specifically; I'm mostly agreeing. There are plenty of Apple products I don't even bother with but I do like the ones I have.
