Based on past timelines, the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 could become available beginning on Friday, September 19.

This is awful for all of us who bought the iPhone 5 on Sept. 21, 2012 and are on a two-year contract.

I purchased my iPhone 5 on Sept. 21st and AT&T is showing my upgrade eligibility on Sept. 14th? Kinda strange but I'm not complaining... ;)

The problem with this logic is that they didn't just sell being first in line, they profited from moving everyone behind them one further spot back. Could these dudes, because they are in first, sell 500 people the opportunity to stand in front of them?

Sounds to me like a mutiny in the works... going to be an awkward 7 days.

Not much of a mutiny yet. In that picture I only see 4 people in line.

Lol at all the posters commenting about how idiotic this is and wondering why people would wait just to get a phone....

READ. THE. STORY.

These people are there for publicity. Sure, they want the phone - but they'll sit there and wait in line so the cameras and reporters who invariably want to interview the nutjobs waiting for almost three weeks come to them.

Some are there because they are being paid to be as well.

Yup - MacRumors posters have the collective reading comprehension of a kindergartner.

Had to laugh. Immediately thought the old saying about a picture being worth a thousand words. In this case people should have read a couple hundred at least.:D

You might want to read the fine print. It might be an "upgrade" but the phone may still cost you two-thirds of one unlocked with an added two your contract.

Most carriers allow you to upgrade for the 2 year contract renewal price 18 months in...?

Why are they waiting? There is just no way that Apple will announce and release on the same day. There is this thing called FCC and Apple usually announces, then submits to FCC approval afterwards.

Did no one read, they all do it for publicity. No fan boy thing here!

You then get the followers who see a line and jump in it not knowing why.

It's natural human behaviour to copy others. We all believe we make choices based on weighing up the facts but we don't.

It takes effort to engage the analytical side of our brains, the lazy side just takes over for most of the time and makes you do dumb stuff. The biggest issues is even if you are aware of it it's impossible to counter that behaviour, it's well worth reading about. There was a BBC show called how we really make decisions that is well worth watching.

Just wait until they hear it only has 1GB of RAM!!

Why, because it's an odd number? :D

Thanks, you said it for me.

I think most of us still consider them idiots, regardless of the reason. Granted, if you're being paid a handsome sum to sit there .. well .. I guess it COULD be worth it, but probably not.

i was about to say, "don't these folks have jobs???"

then after reading the article, i see they do...and they are on the job now.

going to look like idiots if the 60-70 million iPhones rumored to being produced are available. Apple knows they need to have as much on hand supply as possible. The days of camping are now for what?

There could be a billion iPhones produced and widely available, they don't really care. They aren't there for the iPhone they are there for the publicity and most likely to promote a website. Come on man how many years does this have to happen for people to get whats going on lol.

It would be awesome to have a leisurely life that would allow me to sit in NY outdoors for 2 weeks. Unfortunately instead I sit in my cubicle (also without walls) the same period (and the next 40 years).

I finally made it to that store a few days ago! Didn't see any campers then, but took this sweet panorama. That store is PACKED! And the cube is gorgeous. It gets pretty hot in the elevator. I took it up with our stroller. My wife, her aunt and my baby girl (in said stroller) are actually in the left of the panorama. It's downscaled though, but I didn't realize it until now.

I'm probably weird, but I'll just wait a few days/week after it hits the shelves and pick one up at the store. If it's sold out, I'll try back again some other day.

There will be no preorder. Online orders start at offline launch date

How do you know? Apple has done it both ways in the past.... Nobody outside of Apple and perhaps a few wireless company executives know how they are going to do it until the announcement on the 9th.

The chance is slim, close to none, yet possible that Apple trolls us all and releases something different.
For example, a slightly updated version of Mac Pro, at just under 5k at $4999.99, enough supply for every customer in town.....
at this point, are you gonna spend that 5k or not? if you do, well you're spending 5k on a computer that you'll likely never reach its 100% potential....and if you're not, then you wasted over a week of your time sleeping on the street for nothing.....
Please Tim and Phil, let's just do it this time for the LOL.
