but does anyone have an idea about the possibility of a way to connect the ipad to the iphone to use the gps chip (which is only included in the 3G ipad, not the wifi only model)?

Are you familiar with "GPS Serial"? In the ModMyi source, it's supposed "to allow use of external GPS in any AppStore application". If/when the iPad is jailbroken, you can run this on it, and the "external GPS" in this case would be the GPS from your iPhone.

Tehter!

Yes you will be able to tether, but not with the usb cable. You will use the new multi touch air gestures shown in the demo yesterday. Place the iphone and ipad next to each other. Turn on the wifi of each and wave your index and middle finger over both and say "tehter".

May the force be with you.
I cant pronounce that.<g> Im curious how "our friend" is tethering....unless he bought his 3gs before the 3.1 firmware upgrade. Maybe its just me..but After I upgraded my old 3g to 3.1..I lost tethering capabilities. My sons 3gs will still tether,(he waited to see what would happen on mine) Im getting an ipad..but Im also a little hesitant to pay an extra fee to ATT.

My dreams of using the ipad as a HUD in the car hinge on this. Anyone wanna speculate on this one?

They are using micro-SIM for the iPad. So presumably, no

It's definitely possible, just let the damn thing come out, and the jailbreakers will rip it wide open in no time.

Options for tethering iPad through iPhone

1. Using USB: NO because a USB connection needs a master and a slave. Neither iPhone nor iPad can be a master - they are both slaves.

2. Using WiFi: YES, but only if you're prepared to jailbreak your phone so you can use the MyWi app (or similar) on the iPhone.

3. Using Bluetooth: UNKNOWN because we don't know yet if Apple will include it in the iPad feature set.

So true. Can't wait. It's almost sad that the 4.0 update for iPhone/iPad has almost no chance of beating the benefits of JB 3.x

The iPad will be jailbroken in days and then we can all enjoy Backgrounding and the whole relm of customization as it gets ported to iPad. Can't wait to put the 10 hr battery to the test!

I wouldn't be so sure. Sometime the jailbrakes have taken a while. And with Apple having control of the chip in the iPad ...

Depending on your carrier, you can have tethering since 3.1.3.

I have it active since the last update since my carrier supports it.

If I understand correctly in the US you only have AT&T? If they don't support tethering, you won't be able to do it.

Due to laws in Belgium, Apple had to sell their iPhones here without tied dataplan. This of course has advantages (no need to change provider) and disadvantages (no subsidizing). So you can have an iPhone and choose your carrier. 2 out of 3 carriers support tethering.

I doubt though that the iPad will be able to use the iPhone's tethering functionality. At the moment you can't connect your iphone to a laptop's internet trough bluetooth for instance.

You need to make sure that your internet source is a WIFI station, so I think that you will need to jailbreak and make your iphone a wifi station. I'd rather have it the clean bluetooth way, but I'm afraid that's not going to be the case.

For me my "communications device" is the iPhone. I would want to connect my ipad and my macbook pro to it when I'm on the road. I'm afraid though that Apple will make it this simple.

The iPad seems like a piece of crippled trash to me. That said, I believe once its jailbroken, its going to be an amazing device.

I certainly hope apple will allow the ipad to easily tether to the iphone. I'm 99% sure they will but they just might not have it ready at launch.

Having said that, another good reason to get the 3g version is that it also has a GPS, whereas the non-3g version does not.

I live in Canada and when I currently make trips to the US I get absolutely raped in roaming charges on both data and voice by my carrier (Rogers). However, if I get an ipad with 3G I could always sign up for a month of AT&T service whenever I visit. At $30/month for unlimited with no contract, I could then use the ipad to check my e-mails, do skype, etc and not have to worry about crazy nazi-style roaming charges.

I wouldn't even consider an iPad unless the allow Bluetooth or WiFi tethering between the iPad and iPhone. Many work sites don't allow you to connect to their WiFi, or load software on your computer. And who wants to spend the extra money for the iPad 3G subscription. You already have 3G and WiFi on your iPhone and would only be using one item (iPad or iPhone) connection at a time. This would allow you to be able to sync your iPad with MobileMe through the iPhone 3G connection at your workplace. This would make the iPad very useful as a REAL item at a workplace. Many possibilities would come up in the form of usefulness. But, I know, that's too practical, and if they can make more money..... why should they do something like that? Why, so I would buy the iPad for my wife at her work!!!! Otherwise, useless.... to her.

Could you get away with a Cradlepoint device?

via USB -->Cradlepoint -->via wifi --> iPad?

Also if you become a data plan user, do you also get access to the free wifi spots for just 30 days?

Yes you can tether, at least with a jailbroken iPhone. As long as the ipad can connect to a wifi and the iPhone can transmit a wifi signal (MyWi) than no need for 3G iPad. If I'm going to pay for 3G I just minus well get a mifi.

You seem overly hopeful. Remember the latest jailbreak for the 3GS, new bootrom is tethered. Not even a real jailbreak, imo.

Basically, the answer is yes, since your iphone can tether to any random computers then you can tether it to ipad as well.. Ipad just acts like a normal computer. Happy Ipad..
