It doesn't run 2.2.1 so, you won't like it.

I don't have a problem running 3.whatever. I have a problem with running 3.whatever on an iPhone or iPhone 3G. The iPhone 3GS runs 3.whatever perfectly fine. I don't hate the OS, I hate how it runs on old hardware. The iPad is obviously not old hardware.

I know it was a joke, but it's old. Just let me be and don't get me started.

So it would probably work with the bluetooth tethering (which I totally forgot about)? Because that would be awesome. I really don't feel like spending the extra time and money on the 3G version.
I don't care if it's a bit slow, just as long as I can file the occasional word doc with my editor, that's fine.

I will be getting one for sure now that tethering should be no problem. My 2 year old macbook still has some time on it, after that, iPad for sure.

Know one knows for sure until they have one. I doubt you will be able to USB tether because the iPad would have to have software to look to the USB for internet.

Same for Bluetooth, they have to have the right bluetooth stack for it to work.

Probably THIS.
I doubt it would work via USB, (there isn't a USB port on the iPad anyway, you'd have to plug in into the Camera Connector), so I doubt that would work.
Maybe it would work over Wi-Fi.

Here is a question, can you tether your iPhone w/ 3G to an iPod Touch or another iPhone????

My Magic 8-ball says no.

While Apple has been better recently with allowing carriers to dictate where tethering is allowed, they will want to sell some 3G iPads.

No way Apple will make this native, but if your iPhone is jailbroken you can turn it into a wifi hotspot using MiWi. Not as clean as BlueTooth or WiFi tethering, but it works.

Jailbreak your iPhone, and download mywi. Google it to learn more. I've never actually used it cause I just heard about it yesterday. Basically it's supposed to turn your iPhone into a wifi hot spot. I'd imagine you would be able to join that wifi network with the iPad.

Listen to this man.

good call. tis what i am waiting for :)

Tethering the iPad using iPhone is exactly what I was planning on doing. What's the point of paying $130 more plus $360 in data package per year?

Amen. I'm really hoping AT&T and Apple find a legit way of doing this instead of requiring a jailbreak. It might even bring in more iPhone customers to AT&T as kind of a bonus. Just put a damn cap on the amount of tethered data you can use to keep people from watching Hulu over 3G if it won't be available. But I guarantee I would pay more than $5/month extra for any more 3G data on a consistent basis. My phone bill is high enough already.

TITCR. I doubt they would allow you to tether. They are making the plan pretty reasonable at $30, and just counting on you being willing to pay for both
They won't allow you to do a lot of things with iPhone, and people are doing them.

I use the iPhone Modem jailbreak app to tether to my macbook. This wouldn't work with the iPad as you have to create a Computer to Computer or Ad-hoc for iPhone Modem to function. You can't create a computer to computer connection with the iPhone OS.

if occasion calls for it, there will be an app for it.

totally agree. the dev community has been a big part of why i enjoy my iphone so much and why i'm not too upset at the lack of multitasking on the ipad (hello backgrounder!)

Hypothetical question: Workarounds for tethering internet to the ipad from the iphone is obviously possible with the software that already exists but does anyone have an idea about the possibility of a way to connect the ipad to the iphone to use the gps chip (which is only included in the 3G ipad, not the wifi only model)?

My dreams of using the ipad as a HUD in the car hinge on this. Anyone wanna speculate on this one?
