IPad Bluetooth tethering

Tethering works flawlessly with my jailbroken iPhone 3G and my new iPad. I just downloaded MyWi fro Cydia and I'm using it right now! Very cool. This totally makes purchasing the 3G iPad unnecessary. for now, anyway.

hoping for a bluetooth tethering option to the iPad. i'm still running iPhone 3.0, with the non-jailbroken tethering option turned on.

Iphone 3.1.3 and Ipad

I have a 3.1.3 3gs iphone and Ipad. I live in Canada and have service from Telus.

I have used the bluetooth tethering to run my mac book pro. I have also used the mac book pro as a wireless router to for my iphones in hotels without wifi.

I bought the ipad in US last week. I tried to get ipad using 3gs by tethering with bluetooth last week in the US on AT&T and it did not work. My son stil has it and is returning from US today. I will try it on Telus network and hoping it will work here but not optimistic.

I have read and concluded:
1) You can jailbreak iphone and turn it into a wireless router
2) based on my experience in US with ATT bluetooth tethering did not work with Ipad an iphone
3) there is no jailbreak available yet for 3.1.3. It seems that everyone is waiting for os4 to come out and not putting energy to 3.1.3 jailbreak. iphoneland claims to jailbreak 3.1.3 for $25 but most posts say it is a scam so I am not willing to try it. I looked for a way to move back to 3.1.2 and jailbreak and wait and could not find it.
4) so you can get it to work with jailbreak and installing a wireless router app if you have an iphone lower than 3.1.3 is my conclusion. Which I don't have. And I will have to wait and hope that this is solved in os4.

If I am wrong on 3) please let me know. If you know of a way to move back to 3.1.2 please let me know as well.

I will let you know whether bluetooth tethering works in Canada when my son returns today. [He would not let it out of his hands when I left Las Angelos:) ]

So MyWi makes your iPhone broadcast a Wi-Fi signal, and then you just connect the iPad via Wi-Fi?

I currently have the iphone 3gs and I tether it to my laptop and other random computers.... my question is

Do you think I will have to buy the 3G version of the IPAD or can i get the wireless version and tether my iphone to it... cause if I hear correctly I might be able to remove my existing sim card and use it in the IPAD.. if this were true.. ANNOYING!! thers no way i want to take that out back and forth... but if it isnt true.. the tether option is pretty convienient ..

any thoughts?

Didn't feel like reading the whole thread, so I apologize if someone's already answered. Yes. I have MyWi on my iPhone and have tethered 3 different iPads (one in the Apple store).

Tether away.

Steve Jobs has already said that the iPad will not tether with the iPhone. I use a pretty simple solution. If you have a Nokia phone laying around, you can go to www.joikupspot.com and download their application. Costs about $11 and AT&T does not know. This solution allows your Nokia phone to become a wifi access point. Pretty handy if you travel often hand have a pocket full of sim cards.

What Jobs says is what is supported by Apple, and he is speaking on behalf of AT&T too here. But what is physically possible completely different! In short, it IS possible to tether iPad to iPhone! You just need a jailbroken iPhone and $10 in software!

Instructions:

Slight correction what Jobs said is what you are contractually bound to. But you can do it if you have a total disregard for honoring your contractual agreements, and potentially a couple of federal laws regarding copyright.

And before someone says you have a legal right to unlock your phone let me stop you now, you do have the legal right to unlock your phone, a right that you waived in your AT&T contract.

And you do not have a legal* or contractual right to alter the software to add features.

But ultimately there just isn't enough time or people to pursue the contractual and legal* violations that occur by Jailbreakers, so it is ultimately up to the honor and character of the end user.

* The legal remarks should be taken as potential the question of legality is currently in the court system for a determination, that being said the claim did have enough merit to warrant a hearing, and the courts have sided with the developer in most cases that are similar.

But regardless of it being criminal it is a contractual violation to which Apple has until now limited their response to invalidating the warranty.

And AT&T will boot you from their network if they catch you.

You're talking about the legalities of Jailbroken phones. I have Netshare, which Apple sold to me in the App Store. Now, jump on the legalities of that!!! Apple handled the transaction of the sale, and made a profit on it.

iPhone to iPad Tethering is easy.

Can you tether your iPhone to your iPad? The answer is yes. And below is a link to a step by step tutorial on how to jailbreak your iPhone with one step and then tether your iPad to your iPhone:

1 more Canadian awaits the news, let us know asap if Steve will let us tether to the iphone, makes so much sense not to have another data plan, 3 yr term etc.

Tether canada

Hi just got my iPad yesterday I'm in nova scotia' can't wait to hear if it works for glavigne , if not I should be trying it later on today when I head to the Rogers store... Really don't want to jailbreak me iPhone to make this work...

Somebody end the suspense already!

MackelYnarp - please, keep us posted on this. I've been scouring the 'net trying to find someone who can give a definitive, proven answer on this and all I keep finding are people who have jailbroken their phones in the US but nothing relating to Canada.

It's interesting because those whom have jailbroken their iPhones in the US are "tethering" but via MyWi or other such WiFi sharing methods, after Apple took away Netshare off the AppStore. Nothing about actual tethering via Bluetooth which AT&T doesn't allow anyway.

It's obvious with Rogers announcement that they are planning on having iPad plans but could those just be for those who don't have an iPhone to tether to?

I've also read conflicting views - some people saying it's because the iPad and/or iPhone can only act as a slave device, not a master, that is the reason they cannot tether together but would like some actual proof of someone trying to do it Canada with a non-jailbroken iPhone.

I mean, of course there are other options (3G model, buy a MyWi, jailbreak) but they involve either outlaying more for another data plan (3G or Rogers MyWi) or going through the jailbreak process (as if I don't have enough problems...) :(

Tether

Will do! Didn't get into Rogers Friday going to head in on Monday and get the verdict! I will let u know as soon as I do... If not looks liken ill be jail breaking just for tethering... But u can undo a jail break aparently?!
Till then...

re: Tether

Thanks! From what I've read, you can undo a jailbreak by doing a full restore from iTunes but of course, you lose any applications that you have installed via the jailbreak.

Looking forward to your news. Blackra1n and MyWi might be the only solution...

Bluetooth tethering for ipad

What would be great is if I could jailbreak my ipad instead so it can tether with my iPhone through bluetooth.

I think that it would be something possible on an jailbreak ipad.

It would be easier on my phone battery and I prefer to keep the phone legit if possible.

Tether narp

So the verdict is in, no phones work with tether to the ole iPad even in Canada unless you plan on jail breaking ... Stupid
We tried a little nokia flip phone as well, shows up but doesn't connect...

This was widely known for the past few weeks. You can't tether your iPhone to ipad unless you jailbreak and use mywi. By the way, it works flawlessly (in Toronto on Rogers).

Question in regards to this.

Unless something changes I plan on keeping my jail broken iPhone when the next iPhone is released in June. My purpose of keeping it will be to keep a jail broken phone for the sole purpose of tethering to my iPad. Since it appears the sim cards are not going to be interchangeable I will add my current phone to my family plan for $10.00 then add the iPhone data plan for $30.00. So basically I'll be paying $40.00 for data. That's 10.00 more then the 3G but over the course of the year it's basically a wash.

My question is, will ATT make me sign a 2 year contract on the extra line I'm adding to my family plan? I'm hoping not for when and if the next phone gets a true non tethered jailbreak I could prolly then cancel that line.

Thanks
David

Very simple solution. Go to www.joikuspot.com. See if your phone is supported. Download the app (about 9€) and it will allow your iPad to tether to your Nokia. I use this all the time and the operator does not know. They only see your Nokia as being tethered as opposed to the iPad.

Bluetooth tethering from the iPhone to the iPad does not work. Period.

Netshare App (the old tethering application apple removed shortly after it was released) also does not work.

MyWi on a jailbroken iPhone is the only way of tethering, by turning your phone into a wifi hotspot / access point.

Now that it's possible to jailbreak an iPad with "Spirit", I wonder if there is a way to use Netshare by setting up a SOCKS network on the iPad then using Netshare on your iPhone? Any thoughts?
