At it's core use, it's to filter the article page comments that appear outside of the forum. It's to give casual readers a sampling from the forums without having to delve into 30-40 pages.

Later on, it may (or may not) have more usage as we integrate it more.

Wait, my pipe theory was actually (somewhat) flowing in the right direction???

Any chance the additional (possible) features can be incorporated in the user-forum level, or given a filter subset within forum search?

Also, prior to your answer here, I was betting the down button removal itself was an experiment / test in itself.

Ok, I am still confused... what exactly was the point of this poll when the third least popular option is the winner? It's like having Al Gore elected to be president.

I think they're trying to get two or three of the options to come together and form a coalition-type government so that they'll have a governing majority. Like Israel's or UK's current governments. :p

That's unfortunately exactly what it seems like and the UK's government is working out great so far...

I say all or none. Having just voting up is silly IMO. It's like FB now.

Oh well, just gotta keep the voting tag blocked via software.

Dude, the question was "Remove vote buttons?"

It is safe to assume that the people who voted for "Yes" and "Like button only" probably understood that in order to make those options happen, something regarding the vote buttons needed to change. So, it is safe to assume that they wanted some sort of change to occur. That's all I said.

If they didn't want the system to change, they would have voted "No".

No I'm not.

They voted for options that would require change. Therefore, it is safe to assume that they wanted a change to the voting system. I never said what kind of change they wanted, but that they wanted change. I know. It's hard.

You don't get to assume things in votes. Not even pointless votes that are overruled at the will of the gods. They wanted a change but using that to justify your preferred solution is lame.

There are currently over 11,000 people online. So, you really think this site should go by what 250 people voted for in a poll??? Or even the like only and get rid of voting numbers???? Arn decided this based on how he saw the negative voting affecting the site. This isn't a democracy.

And I know for a fact that there a large number of people that just vote down anything certain members post; it doesn't matter what they write. It's time for the trolls to have to actually write something, so they can be done away with, IMO.

I, for one, am sick of the negativity on this site. Some of you people would never act the way you do on this site in public. If you did, you wouldn't be here, because you would've had your head bashed in long ago.

I agree, I didn't particularly like the vote buttons to begin with, but just having an upvote is ridiculous, either put back the down vote button or get rid of it all together.

We are discussing how to interpret the votes and my disagreement with the idea they support the action taken. If you want to post about something then post. Don't abuse replies by replying with content nothing to do with what you are replying to.

There are also (roughly) 20 pages of comments in this thread alone that interpret the votes far more than the poll shows itself.

Abuse replies? We? Okay, tough guy. Perhaps, you should read my post again, since it responds to your interpreting

Hilarious.

Yes you do. If things are a certain way, and people vote to have them changed to being a different way, it's safe to assume that they want some sort of change.

I never implied that I know exactly what the people who voted wanted. But it's quite obvious that everyone who voted for anything but "No", wanted some sort of change.

So as with Facebook, we may only "Like" something now.... Interesting comment on society.

This is the same approach used on many sites, besides FB. I've never even seen a site that had this down-voting crap, TTYTT.

Same here, MR is the only site I've ever come across with the down-vote type of thing.

I still call for the total elimination of the voting system; but at least getting rid of the cowardly down-vote is a step in the right direction.

They expressed a preference for a particular specific change. The only reason I can see to group it together and call it a vote for change is to misrepresent its meaning. If this is not your intent I'm sorry. I mistakingly believed you were agreeing with

"Which means that 52% favored removing the downvote button and 34% favored removing the upvote button, as well." when you replied to dukebound85 who disagreed with the quoted statement.

Just because you want change, doesn't mean any change is going to be equally acceptable. Let's say you are a die-hard Mac user. Your current MacBook is showing its age, and you know you need a new computer -- you want a change. But say someone gave you a Dell notebook, and said, here, you wanted a change, here's a new computer. Would you be happy? NO.

So in the same way, some of the people who voted for getting rid of both buttons might feel unhappy with just having only the like button. Yes, it's a change, but not all changes are equal.

It would be easy for a several members to up-vote the most idiotic posts and that's what your potential new members are reading. I'd have an employee deciding what makes it on those pages. FWIW.

Well, no, since the entirely idiotic posts tend to get downvoted :)

At least they used to...

I'm sorry but after being a long time apple fan, even when it wasn't cool to like apple, I put up with all the changes made to macrumors and had no problem. This is the first change to the website that has made me search for a place to vent my frustration.

If macrumors keeps taking away freedoms of allowing myself to express how I feel then I will take my page views to another apple rumors site. MR is dancing on a fine line here...

We managed without the buttons before, we'll manage now.

Agreed. It is interesting how a guy like the one you quoted acts so ferociously here on an internet forum; however, in real life, I bet he is just another guy who keeps to himself.

Head bashing through monitors should be allowed.

I laughed so hard at this... made my day. :D

You'd be surprised at the people who won't....

No one is taking away your freedom to express yourself. You just have to go back to being less lazy about it.

Instead of clicking a button and having your opinion watered down and mixed in with people who down-vote others because they don't like that person and haven't even read the post, people who down-vote just to down-vote, and people who arbitrarily click those buttons, you actually have to express yourself with words.

Yikes.....

You realize actually having the vote buttons in the first place was a change, right? Were you frustrated when we didn't have the vote buttons?
