Alternative to iTunes Store

I would like to see iTunes in Canada too but just in case nothing gets announced tomorrow, there is an alternative. Go look at www.allofmp3.com. This is a site run by Russians in Moscow and has been checked out by many people who first thought it was a scam. It really isn't a scam and nobody I know has found anything dodgy going on. The site works by selling music by the amount of data transferred - not by the track or album. I purchased about 12 albums for around US$15.00 which is way cheaper that iTunes. You can choose the bitrate for each track you buy and obviously this varies the cost of the music as you can get AAC at up to 384kbps. I have been using this site since June and they've never overcharged my VISA card... I found the site when it was mentioned in an article in Wired Magazine...

I haven't seen any commercials except the U2 iPod over and over again. My wife and I watch enough TV, to catch this if it was on. Tomorrow when the store opens, I won't have to listen to my wife asking me when it's going to open. I think that is my wish. :D

Hmm, I regularly see two other iPod/iTunes commercials, both with the apple.ca address: Walkie Talke Man, and a hip-hop one I don't know. These commercials have been in roation on the CTV stations at least (Discovery et al) for months, always ending with iPod+iTunes on mac or pc apple.ca

I'm not sure why these reports that they have only just started? Do that few people watch Discovery that nobody's noticed until now ;)

Canadian iTunes users being greeted with the familiar 'the store is not yet available in your country' notice and being directed to a page full of flags

Mentioned this in another thread -- this was happening to me Friday, but as of today I can't even get to the flags. It's just hung up on the "not available" page.

This is different behaviour than I've seen any other time. Here's hoping it's because of a servlet error trying to load the module that will become active tomorrow!

Man, this has been a story either on the main page or Page 2 how many times? Let's hope this is the last time, and let's hope tomorrow is the day!

Isn't that the US page ? Or is the Ireland site redirecting to this site ?

Don't know. It just looks different to me. Maybe I'm hallucinating.

AI says Apple has been advertising iTunes on Canadian TV for two weeks already? That long, really? (Maybe they mean... this week and last... meaning Sat. and Sun. :) )

But iTunes is the not the same as iTunes Music Store. Not sure why people are rushing to point out these commercials. Its pushing the iPod, and iTunes as a solid combo for both Macs and PC's. No hint of any kind that you can buy music online through these ads.

There is one major difference between then and now:
Apple have *stated* that iTMS is coming to Canada in November (2004). There is one day of November left.

Of course, what happened to Ireland could happen to Canada.. though just two days ago Apple said "Still November".

My brother (in Edmonton) has been using my U.S. address for his iTMS. Does anybody know how he'll go about switching his account to a Canadian address, and more importantly, any issues he may come across trying to switch countries? Anybody already have experience with this when the new European stores went online?

More Vapourware

This reminds me of all the software that has had dates slipped... 'we'll release it in... um... er... well we don't exactly know....

I bet there is some pain in the butt two bit entertainment lawyer sitting in Toronto saying 'November eh? Well we'll see about that...'

Bastard lawyers!!!!!!!

Yeah, and that ending URL is in the ugliest font ever and completely does not match the regular Apple font. When they send the video tape up to Canada, can't an't they just attach a post-it note to it saying, "Use Lucida Grande if anything"...

Am I the only one bothered by how bad that looks?

Apple's marketing font (also used to label their products and in the iPod Photo's interface) is not Lucida Grande, but Apple Myriad, which replaced Apple's older font, Apple Garamond, which in turn replaced Apple's first font, Motter Tektura.
Lucida Grande is only used in Mac OS X, and replaced OS 9's Charcoal, which in turn replaced Chicago (which was ressurrected in the iPod's interface). By the way, the mini uses Espy Sans, the font created for the Newton.

It seems to me that Apple's been using their fonts in a rather "promiscuous" way (it would seem more logical to use Lucida Grande on the iPod Photo's interface... Or will Tiger be sporting Myriad? Who knows...), but if they fit their purpose well, let them do so. ;)

I know it's not Lucida Grande, I just thought atleast Lucida Grande would look better than Crapvetica SemiCrap, the font Apple Canada threw in there instead.

PB G5

Stella, you say u have a pb g5. Thats really funny considering i have wated years to get one and i will probably get one verys soon after they come out.

Oh, ok... sorry then :p
Helvetica? I love that font, it usually fits nicely nearly everywhere... But you're absolutely right, under those circumstances, it surely must look like crap... By the way, have you noticed that sometimes, in OS X, text is displayed in Helvetica instead of Lucida Grande (in System Profiler and in Startup Items, for example)? Now THAT looks crappy...

Anyway, what is your opinion on Myriad being used on the iPod Photo? Sure seems like a weird decision to me

I've been using my UK (thus registered in the UK) credit card to buy from the UK iTMS store in here Canada

When canada opens I shall re-register with Apple using my regular email address, and of course, Canadian credit card.

I foresee absolutely no problems.

I'm being optimistic and thinking positive...

Been reading that Wikipedia article too :) Definitely seems strange that Apple are starting to interchange their 'marketing' font and 'interface' font. Personally I prefer Myriad, but Lucida is more condensed so better for interfaces.

Who knows what will happen with Tiger, it already has upwards of 4 themes (Aqua, brushed metal, Aqua smoove, Pro, GarageBand) so another font should make it even more confusing!

Denmark too???

I just went to the iTunes download page on apple's danish site...or so I thought. I get an page does not exist error...Strange for such a popular download :)
Here's hoping for a big surprise later today

Is it just me, or is there absolutely nothing to get excited about here? Music downloads are already legal in Canada! The only thing that you're paying for here is ease of use. Most people do not have a hard time simply downloading a song off acquisition, why do they need iTunes? The songs are sampled at a lower quality and, once again, you have to pay for them! In addition, you won't be able to find rare music (rare as in those uncommon items, not the stuff that Apple tells you is rare) and there still isn't a full list of artists. I have over 1 gig of Radiohead on my computer whereas iTunes music store has... none! This is a service that could only seem appealing to new iMac owners who simply don't know how to use free software to download they're music if it isn't incorporated into iTunes. Quite lame, really.
