maybe my ranting made them change their minds and now decided to give us some new machines to play with :D

...or they just forgot to add another model of the Nest Thermostat ;)

If they are releasing new Macs today, the long downtime would makes sense if they are updating several Mac lines at once and not just one Mac, which is the common practice for Apple.

This would be a substantial change to not only the store, but each Mac's respective pages on the site, which also need to be updated. I could see this taking more time than usual.

Even if you go to the products page for the iMac (which is working) and you attempt to 'Buy Now' you get no joy...

Except for it doesnt. First of all there is no technical reason it has to go down at all, Amazons store is infinitely more complicated and sure does not have to go down whenever a new book comes out.

Secondly, losing this much business just to update a few macs makes no sense. Customers in Asia, Australia, and now Europe pretty much have not been able to place an order all day. This certainly was not planned.

foidulus is right. There is no reason a site needs to go down for updates or maintenance.

All this work is done on a duplicate site - offline. The only small amount of downtime needed is to upload the changed files into place - over the old ones.

Apple taking their site down for such long periods suggests that some greater administration is being put in place to prepare for the changes.

Went to bed thinking routine maintenance. Now I'm thinking 7 hours later that there's something new being released.

Yeah, I have to admit that I think this is all in prep for changes (possibly at WWDC). But something has gone wrong. As mentioned before, Apple will have lost sales with the store being down all day. Its 12.22 here in the UK, thats late enough.
No new machines today, maybe soon though. Imho.

Edit:

Theirs so many issues and changing happening to the store i'll just post photos without explaining each and everyone, most are self explanatory

It might make sense for Apple's business though, since unlike their competition, they have a very tiny and narrowly focused product line that update only once or twice a year. New books come out all the time on Amazon, but we haven't seen any new Mac in over half a year. Huge difference in how much weight these products have in comparison.

And I don't mean that in any technical sense. The online Apple store is just one big great hype machine and hype definitely drives sales.

Edit: I'd like to note, that if this is a maintenance update, this has got to be one of the longest periods, if not the longest, I've ever seen. Typical downtime to update new Mac hardware is also usually during this hour as well.

Given that the german store seems to be up (unstable, slow, but not in maintenance mode), it may be has something to do with the Nest Thermostat. Apple isn't selling it in Germany, though no reason to put the store down ...

One problem, if new iMacs were immenant, wouldnt Apple stores already have them in the back of the shop? This would of been leaked some how. It just cannot be today. Surely?
