Rogers announcement

No details on rate plans...
Edit: 3-year plan, $199 and $299 for 8GB and 16GB model

WWDC SAN FRANCISCO and TORONTO, June 9 /CNW/ - Rogers Communications and
Apple(R) today announced that the highly anticipated iPhone(TM) 3G will be
available in Canada on July 11. iPhone 3G combines all the revolutionary
features of iPhone with 3G networking that is twice as fast(*) as the first
generation iPhone, built-in GPS for expanded location based mobile services,
and iPhone 2.0 software which includes support for Microsoft Exchange
ActiveSync and runs the hundreds of third party applications already built
with the recently released iPhone SDK.
"Rogers has a long history of bringing Canadians the very best in
wireless services, networks and handset innovations," said Rob Bruce,
president, Rogers Wireless. "With iPhone 3G, we will provide our customers
with an amazing mobile experience over Canada's fastest wireless network."
"We're excited to be working with Rogers to bring iPhone 3G to Canada,"
said Tim Cook, Apple's COO. "We can't wait to get this revolutionary phone in
the hands of even more people around the world." iPhone 3G will operate on
Rogers' High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) wireless network, the fastest mobile
network in Canada. HSPA is nationally available in the top Canadian urban
centers from Vancouver to Halifax, covering more than 60 percent of the
population. iPhone 3G will also operate on Roger's coast-to-coast GSM/EDGE
network, proven to be the country's most reliable wireless network. Starting
July 11, iPhone 3G will sell for $199 for the 8Gb model and $299 for the 16Gb
model, on a three-year plan. More details on price plans and retail
availability will be available soon.

(*) Based on 3G and EDGE testing. Actual speeds vary by site conditions.

UGH. I'm on Telus!

Bet you never thought you wished you were with Rogers? I said jokingly to my friend today, "Thank god my contract with Rogers is up so if they need me to sign a new one in order to get the phone I can"... then I slapped myself for like 5 minutes straight.

ps - if your name a reference to Dallas Green's song?

lmao, indeed it is, but clumsy me i forgot an "s" :p

maybe i'll buy out my contract,

Wait and see what the data plans are. I hope that the hundreds (maybe thousands?) who today said they would buy an iPhone at $200 bucks aren't deterred when Rogers announces the data plan.

why? wil it be that bad? what if i take over someone's plan then just buy the phone?

No one really knows. I mean, they have a 7$ unlimited data plan with their Vision phones, but they only have access to certain websites (which is useless since the iPhone needs data from so much more than just web-browsing) and then there plans for smart phones are like 60$ for 1GB which would take forever to use with e-mail but when you start adding full webpage browsing, controlling your computer remotely (if you have a Mac), constantly uploading photos with that .mac (mobile me service), etcetc you might run past that 1GB pretty quick. You really need an unlimited data plan to fully enjoy the phone.
I really think 100$/month is a reasonable expectation for unlimited data and (very) limited voice in an iPhone-only plan from Rogers but who knows?

He means as in Rogers are the proprietors of Fido... the money you give to fido, goes into Ted Rogers' pockets.

I know Rogers owns Fido, I thought he mean that Rogers was better then Fido. I'm pretty sure Fido has different rates then Rogers does correct? Especially on data plans if I'm not mistaken.

I know Fido has per second billing which Rogers doesn't. I also know Fido used to have an unlimited data plan but no longer does. I'm not sure what the current state of data is though. I have to assume they're very similar at this point.

At least Rogers is showing some signs of the upcoming iPhone... do they really think its going to be a surprise?!

Let's say I have the $20 MegaValue Plan already, can I buy the iPhone and put it onto this plan? Because I might take over someone's Rogers contract.

The apple us store is about $9/$100 difference. That being said, i think the 8GB iPhone will be $199 in the us, and $219 in canada. Although its still not current with our exchange, its a step in the right direction (at least we arent paying 20% like last year :S)

I cannot WAIT to buy this, i am so excited. if they have some good plans, i will definitely be on board buying this.
Steve Jobs has said that it will have an absolute limit of $199 US around the world, period. Since the Canadian dollar is worth more than the US dollar, if Rogers offers it at more than $199 they will be breaking their contract with Apple. i.e.- it will be illegal for them to do so.

That being said, Rogers is so totally f*cked up and full of itself that they might actually try to do this. They certainly don't care about what the customers think.

maybe something big is the data plans (as in BIG, expensive)

5mb for $15 dollars

I hope i can just pay like 20-30 for data to my existing plan

I don't think the data plan will exceed 70 dollars. Apple wouldn't let Rogers sell for more expensive than that.
