CANADIAN iPhone Thread

When my wife came home today, I told her the news about the iPhone coming to Canada. To which she replied she had heard about it on the radio while she was flipping around her favorite stations.

Apparently one of the local stations is reporting that you have to get a 3-year $80 plan with it. She didn't know if this was data or talk or both. I have not been able to confirm this via the internet and I can't find the radio station that might have said this (she doesn't remember which one).

So take that with a table spoon of salt. Could just be some reporter grabbing a blackberry plan of the website, and it is my wife...

There isn't enough competition in Canada, especially on the GSM network, so Rogers has zero incentive to offer an unlimited data plan. And they really really really like to charge you overage on data because they make sooooo much money from it. Adding insult to it all is it looks like all the iPhone apps will be making good use of the 3G network, so plan on paying those ridiculous overage charges.

As for unlocked 3G iphones, just wait a few months and you can get them from your local night market/Hong Kong importer.

Regardless of what anyone says on here about their friend/family member/coworker etc etc it's just better to wait. I've heard from a friend that works at Rogers that it was being released this passed January, I've also heard from a friend's friend who works at Rogers it'll be 7$ unlimited data, I've also heard from a clerk at a Rogers store it'll be 100$/month for 200 anytime minutes and unlimited data.
Everyone talks based on what they've heard or what their friends have heard but rarely is anyone right. The press release from Rogers said the plan details would be coming soon, they've got 4-5 weeks to release it so it'll be best to wait for a release from Rogers instead of '"leaks" from people on forums that are almost always 100% wrong.
Based on what we know about Rogers and their data plans, my guess is to expect rates that border on unreasonable but might be inexpensive enough to attract people (ie paying 30$ for 1gb which is really bad but I bet people would accept it). That way when they do announce it, at least you won't be disappointed.

screw the data plan, im not giving them >100$ a month just to have the internet "anywhere". Will I be allowed to just buy a regular voice plan and use the wifi only? Or MUST you buy the data plan? Thanks!

The plan is the only thing that will keep me from buying it. As everyone knows Rogers really sucks with there data plans so hopefully Apple straightened them out.

With ATT they made you sign up for the data plan. I read that ATT was forcing people to activate in-store so you can't even take it home and fake activate it/unlock it and use your voice plan. I don't know if Rogers (or any other carrier will do that) we'll have to see.

Does anyone know if the Windows Mobile email plan would work with the iPhone ...or more specifically... if Rogers would let you use it! :D

I can live without surfing the web over edge, but need push-'like' email. I'm getting my Gmail every 5 minutes through IMAP, but only over wifi because I'm terrified of the edge data bills from Rogers.

Their $15 dollar unlimited email plan with 2GB of data would suit my needs perfectly!

I believe you need to look at that page again, it's not 2 Gigabytes, but 2 Megabytes. There's a very big difference there.

I'm guessing I'll need to buy the iPhone without a contract because I just upgraded last December. I'm wondering what the prices will be without contracts, or if that'll even be possible.

Again, keeping in mind that reps are usually wrong. It's my impression that even if you have a contract you can just re-sign when you buy a new phone... it doesn't add together (like if you have 2 years left and the iphone is a 3 year you won't have a 5 year agree) but instead if just starts a new 3 year period from your sign date.

I've been an iPhone user on the Rogers network since last September when they were first unlocked and love the device. I have turned off the data plan becasue of the excessive data charges from Rogers. It was frustrating sometimes but OK for the most part because of WiFi being available in many places...

BUT - My impression of this new iPhone is that it will really feel stripped down without the data plan. All the applications, etc. will be designed to take advantage of the unlimited data plans, etc.

I'm sure that there will be a reasonable data plan available with the iPhone. Rogers knows that they will sell a lot of these devices but that many consumers will balk at $100+/month plans. When I say reasonable here, I don't mean unlimited for $20 or $30 a month but rather a voice/data plan in the $80-$90 range. My prediction is something like 200 daytime minutes, unlimited evenings and weekends, 100-200 text messages, and close to unlimited data for a rate of $80 per month (plus system access fee of course!)

At the end of the day, I'd rather pay an extra $10 or $20 a month and feel as though I have the full power of the iPhone than a stripped down version with no data.

My biggest concern is the 3 year term. I know that there will be another version of the iPhone next year and I will want to buy one. I would happily pay the initial $399 price for the iPhone and get a 1 year contract...

Yeah it's WAP and not truly unlimited (in that you can't use all of the internet)
It's inthe fine print at the bottom (I think)

Hmm that's tricky.. I can't even find that in the fine print, but I kind of get the idea when I read the description again:

Surfing the mobile Internet has never been so easy. Get any mobile Web site you want right at your fingertips, including Yahoo!, Windows Live, The Weather Network, Facebook, CBC, and more!

So we are back to year 2000.

I'd be willing to pay $75 for unlimited data on top of whichever voice plan I select. I think that's fair as I'd be shelling out over $125 with decent voice, system access nonsense and tax. If they charge a ridiculous amount for a single GB of data, I won't leave Telus.

In fact, if Roger's is greedy with data prices, I promise to leave them for internet and cable and make the switch to Frank and Gordon out of spite.

There hasn't been any mention of Roger's being the exclusive carrier in Canada. Obviously, it's the only GSM provider, but that will likely change in 2009 and I'd be willing to wait it out to see if a new carrier comes into town, or if Bell or Telus finally jump over to GSM which has been rumoured.

Wasn't it announced when the first generation iPhone came out that Apple wouldn't let a carrier sell the iPhone without an unlimited data plan? You were supposed to be able to use the phone to its full potential, and that requires unlimited data. Now, maybe they have relaxed those rules a bit, or Rogers has gotten around them a bit, but you guys are dreaming if you think you'll be able to get an iPhone without any data plan at all. You're also dreaming if you think you'll be able to get one for less than $50 a month. I'd put money on it being $80-$120 a month. As said before, Rogers has no competition in the GSM market so they can pretty much sell them for whatever they want.

Also, with regards to the 3-year plan, I believe (provided you are eligible for an upgrade) signing a 3-year plan will replace whatever plan you had. So no matter how much time you had left on your existing plan, it would be 3 years total, not 3 additional years.

I'd love to say that I'm getting an iPhone right away, but the if the plans are outrageous, probably not. Either way I'm waiting to see the new prices/plans for the Blackberry Bold as well as the iPhone before I make any decisions.

I would love to see Telus finally jump over to GSM, they're my favorite cell company. I'm only with Rogers because of GSM...

Yes. This is what happens.
Over the years I've been with every cell company in Canada (including clearnet, remember them?) and a new 3-year contract REPLACES your current contract in all circumstances. The only tricky part is most companies only let you replace your current 3-year contract after the first year is over. If you have 1-year or 2-years remaining on your contract, they are more than happy to bump you to 3-years immediately.

Rogers Taking A List

ok, i called rogers today and asked about pre-ordering the iphone. the rep said they can get my name down for a list they are putting together. it happens that i'm #3 in their list. i will be getting a call as soon as they arrive.

one thing i learned is that this is just for new clients and existing ones wanting to switch to the iphone will have to wait. i happen to be swtiching from another provider so it's good for me fortunately.

just passing on the info. :)

It's arriving on July 11th so there's no need to wait by the phone in hopes that Uncle Ted calls. I don't imagine they'd hold a unit for you so your name/number/email will probably just go into their marketing database.

i've thought this too but i guess it's better than nothing at the moment. :)

I "think" I want unlimited data.. i really done know if a gig a month is lots or what for my useage.. i have free internet at work all day and at home.. i dont take the bus :) I'm looking forward to the idea of using the GPS on trips though.

Looking at blackberry plans yes it looks like its gonna be 90$ or something.. but hopefully less.. and i can possibly get a cheap rate as my sister works under the rogers umbrella and can pass on savings to family..

But ya if u look at AT&T they were charging 20$ a month for unlimited data.. and are going up to $30... im not expecting anything near that from rogers :(

It is funny (to me) to see people complaining that they now have to pay a whole 30$ for unlimited data. I would loooove to have that for even 50-60$.. maybe even 80$!
