...you made a really big mistake IMO.
you should have waited however long the wait was to get the imac and touch...

sorry

I almost bought a Dell laptop for uni and it was going to take about a month to arrive, so I walked over to the local Apple Store and picked up my new MacBook Pro. It's curious, because even if I had ordered the MBP, it would have arrived much sooner than the Dell. Just do what you feel like you should do. It's just a computer, after all.:)

FWIW, Dell has faced a huge backlash over shipping delays of many of their computers:

http://www.click2houston.com/investigates/14108518/detail.html

google around, and you'll find tons of stories about this. Dell has actually officially apologized, citing delays from parts manufacturers and so on.

Point being, it's not just Apple being jerks and "not wanting" to ship. As you can imagine, Apple would love to ship on time and sell as much as possible. Now, I don't know if Apple is more incompetent when it comes to channel planning, but usually Dell is thought of as masters of channel control... yet even Dell has been sideswiped by this problem.

If you buy something that's your second choice, you should have good reasons for it. Otherwise, you've saved a month, but are going to suffer for the rest of your ownership period.

Personally, I'm lucky that I don't need either the iMac or the iPod Touch at this moment, because I wouldn't want them right now - both are seriously full of bugs, all well documented. Sometimes companies have problems with first run hardware - and Apple has had memorable bad ones. This is an example of such a situation, a very strong example. iPod Touch is ridiculous - the screen problems alone would scare me away, plus it's badly limited software-wise. I'd wait for a refresh before I'd plunk money for one. The iMac is not quite as bad, but still has some serious issues. Lucky for me, I'm not in the market for one until next year. I'm a bit disappointed in Apple quality control as of late.

Depending on your financial situation, going with the Dell might not be a bad idea. You can use if for a year or so, and then get an iMac once they've worked out most of the bugs. The Zune thing though - you lost me there. There's no reason to get a Zune that I can see - it's hardware that's about to be either updated or abandoned very soon. Why not go for a different iPod? And the RAM is easy to send back. Good luck, whatever you decide.

sorry, but if you don't know the advantages of OS X over Windows, then stick to the Dell, but the Zune must be some crappie piece of hardware/software mix.

Seriously, cancel that stupid Dell and Zune (!) and wait for the iMac. You won't regret it.

I'm sorry to be so blunt but, I don't understand why you would expect any of us to care. To make a thread about this IMO is really quite silly to say the least.

Do whatever you want. I am surprised at how many responses you have had so far.

Everyone here is probably gonna tell you to stick with the Mac and cancel the Dell. And if you go to a PC forum they will tell you to do just the opposite. I think you need to consider what you'd rather have and let that inform your decision rather than listen to a bunch of biased people.

I think that if you really like Mac's more than PC's you'll be disappointed. I know that when ever I have to use a PC I am acutely aware of what it is lacking. But that is just me.

Now my problem is an apple order will take another month and the dell will take about a week, I’m already using a laptop that I’ve had to borrow and ive had it for almost a month so far and I couldn’t ask the owner to continue to loan me it because when I asked to borrow it I told them I wouldn’t need it for long because my new computer should ship in 4 days….

Look at you, you're starting to regret your decision, and the Dell still hasn't arrived...usually this is the climax of excitement, waiting on the Computer to arrive, but you're already regretting it! cancel that junk and reorder your iMac and Touch...hurry up and cancel the dell stuff

even if it takes another month, let's think a little further than that, you're making a decision that will last you for several years (many more years if you get the iMac :D since it will out last the Dell speed wise and beauty wise) so what's a month of waiting if you'll ENJOY your machine for the years to come...and personally I doubt it would be a month, maybe 2 weeks max.

I say keep the Dell an Zune.....

the iMac and iPod are CLEARLY better.....but if your going to complain this much before you even get the machine, then I can't imagine what you'll be like when you actually get it....

my $0.02

That is really a pisser about the shipping delay on the iMac. But a Zune? Seriously? Well, my vote goes with the :apple: solution of course...

Do you know what delayed the order? Was it a build to order option? Or were you waiting for the touch to be released,
If you were waiting for the touch to be released, well, of course it was delayed as the thing was only "officially" released today. If you are ordering an off the peg iMac, and order today, it should ship today and be with you in a week. It sounds like it was just the touch that delayed the order, if apple were doing their "we're only shipping when we have everything ready" thing.

[.edit] the touches have a 7-10 day wait on the website, so the order may take 2 weeks, either way, that's your holdup there.

Just think how much time you'll waste with a dell :p just plugging in all those cables for a start!

I know i will enjoy the apple products more, but the waiting time is ridiculous, I could walk to my local apple store (which is 3+ hours drive away) and get it my bloody self before apple even changes my order status from “not yet shipped”

there's an idea.

The thing is I asked the sales assistant to ship them separately when I placed my order, he told me the iMac should arrive in 3-5 days and the iPod Touch would ship at the end of the month, but when I checked my order on the website it said all items were to ship together, I phone apple support again and asked why they had done this, the sales assistant couldn’t give me an answer and when I requested that they split the order I was told it couldn’t be done, a few days later I phoned up to upgrade my iPod Touch from an 8GB to a 16GB model, they took my details and said it would be no problem, a week later I got an e-mail saying that they couldn’t update my order once it had been placed, this obviously had me mad enough at Apple before my order started to get closer and closer to its shipping date with no update, so when the shipping day rolled round and my order status was still “not yet shipped” yet others who had ordered after me were getting delivery dates and tracking numbers I phone apple support again, had the sale assistant say that the shipping time of a month was normal on stock configured iMacs and wouldn’t listen to my argument of it saying 4 days to ship on there website I cancelled my order

*twigs*
I call BS on this entire thread, the zune isn't even for sale in the UK, and you say you are in Durham - England.
Time to stop now don't you think?

Amazon and eBay do ship world wide, so do a lot of other shops in fact, i know people with the iPhone who live here in the UK, but oh wait that’s only available in the US so there iPhones must just be a figment of my and there imagination....

Think before we post?

this thread belong @ the dell.com site, no one here uses zune's and dells so i think you are on the wrong boards.

But you ordered *through dell* who DON'T sell the Zune in the UK, it's not listed on their UK store, and without going throught their order system, I am pretty sure that to ship to the UK you need to go through their UK store.

i didn't say i bought the Zune from dell did i?

Ok, but it is not officially available in the UK which I think was the point. Buying from other sellers on Amazon is just the same as buying on eBay (worse actually). It still isn't officially available here.

After wanting a Mac for a long time, firstly a MacBook but then when the new iMac came out I fell in love with it, I finally placed an order on September 13th for a 20” 2.4GHz iMac and also an iPod Touch (£85 off with BtS rebate). This morning I checked my order status and it was still on “not yet shipped”

Gosh.. try ordering any Apple product over here in Austria. It'll take at least a month. When I ordered my Powerbook (mid-product cycle, no particularly overwhelming demand) I waited more than one month, and it was dead on arrival, so I had to wait another 16 days for a replacement.
