No - that would have detracted from the iPhone 3G launch. They should have not made the iPod touch or iPhone 2.5G upgrade available until a few days after the iPhone 3G release.

That way those paying for the new toys get it first - and then the rest of us get it afterwards.

Cheers, Ed.

The only thing I can see for their reasoning is that they really want their App Store to be a success along with Mobile Me and the 3G. So they wanted to be fair to all their current and future customers: iPhone, iPod Touch, .Mac, App Store Developers, and future iPhone 3G users.

iTunes now recognizes that the 2.0 software is available, but the "Learn More" button returns back to the summary page. We're getting closer, I suppose.

Have been having all the same problems (switching from various error messages to now just going to the white ipod screen and back again!) and althought this is very frustrating now i have another problem added to the mix!

Updated to itunes 7.7 earlier, downloaded a couple of apps (while waiting for the 2.0 update to work... and waiting.... and waiting...!) and they went into the new apps part of the itunes library, with the new icon on the left hand menu. But just realised this icon has disappeared!! tried downloaded another app (all free ones thankfully) and it has just disappeared somewhere into my hard drive!! Have tried shutting down and restarting but no joy.

Any one else having the same problem?! Some one please help!

I have that as well. I'm thinking maybe it will be re-activated once the 2.0 firmware is installed? "Applications" was visible until I docked my iPod Touch (1.1.4).

lets hope.... it would be a major kick in the teeth to finally get the 2.0 update only to have itunes go wrong and not actually be able to download any apps!! lol

Try reinstalling iTunes? Go to www.apple.com/iTunes and download it.

Maybe this will work... I'm really not for sure mine is still there.

Well, in the mean time I've decided to download some apps for when the 2.0 comes back online.

At least I can do that :)

This launch was massive of course, with not only 3G iphones but ipod touches and iphones. Add to that the launch in so many different countries and you've got overstressed servers.

Patience my friends...

right, i give up! Is 1.10 am uk time and enough is enough! hopefully will get a more pleasant experience when i try again tomorrow (and hopefully itunes will magically fix itselfs too, i can live in hope!) Good luck to all those continuing with the frustration, i hope it works for you soon!

Same here... I have just bookmarked the Buy Now link on the iPod touch page because seeing all the iPods with the new software on them makes me sick!

Well at least apple has done something for me! I am almost have an upgrade on my user title at MacRumors... Yipee!

A few minutes ago it was doing the "show the word iPod on a white screen and then go back to the iPod summary screen" thing a few minutes ago, but now 2.0 is not even showing up as available. It's back to thinking 1.1.4 is the newest there is.

update just changed to 1.1.4, theyre restarting 2.0 update server i think *crosses fingers*

Looks like they decided to lighten the load and take the iPod touches out of the equation... 1.1.4 is now the latest...

ugh

They should just let us download the update now, and bill us when we connect to buy apps, they know the serial # of our devices and what account they are attached to.

it's like Christmas all over again!

it sure would have been smart to release the 2.0 to previous iPhone and iPod touch users last week... I think this will probably be the last time Apple screws up like this (and it is a screw up people). the press coverage has been very negative.
