Is the usb update method the same for the USB C Carlinkit as the USB A ? Just tried updating to 2020-07-29 - followed instructions and, light was flashing and now just have a solid red light on the CarlinkIt device at the moment - been around 5 mins so far.
I too had the red light problem on my car link kit usb c and meant it was bricked... fixed red light means bricked. I had to send it back to China for a replacement and from the uk it cost a lot. The moral of the tale is don’t upgrade the firmware if at all possible, the device easy will brick...

Mine sat with a solid red light after 5 mins took it down and plugged it in and it worked and had updated... this thing is so random!

I have CarLinkIt v1 never worked on my Intellilink, which I believe maybe is a “cousin” of your MyLink3, after Googling.

It’s never worked, it keeps just blinking the CarPlay icon.

It’s interesting that your v2 USB-C version works now. I’m wondering if I should order on Amazon UK and chance it to see if works, and return if not (at my return cost to Amazon UK)

When you say you left it plugged in overnight, the USB ports wouldn’t have been powered would they? So did it just take a long time for 1st time setup?

Anyone got a WhatsApp for CarLinkIt, the one I had now doesn’t get read.

Has anyone asked CarLinkIt if the USB-C version is different hardware?

On a side note my experiment for a extra power cable to it from a ciggy lighter didn’t work....
There’s a risk it still wouldn’t work, so probably depends on how much it would cost you to return via Amazon UK.

Correct, the USB ports were not powered overnight. Not sure about it taking a long time for 1st time setup. Maybe. I tried many times to plug the dongle in after starting the car and it never works when I do that even when I take a 10-20 minute drive. For some reason I’ve only gotten it to work when the dongle is plugged in before starting the car. I’m not sure what to make of it but that is what I found.

It’s just not reliable enough with MyLink3 though. Like I said it connects at startup only like 25% of the time and doesn’t connect at all maybe 25-30%. The other times it connects anywhere between 2-10 minutes which is annoying.

Yeh not sure in return cost, there’s that option, or the option to pay and get my car system software updated to see if that helps.

Ah ok I thought after initial it worked all the time now, pity, it’s so random and buggy.

Just an FYI, I upgraded to the 7-29 version this evening via USB without a problem. Will test out over the coming days and report back. The previous 7-17 version was horrible for me, tons of crackling which I never experienced before. I am using it in a 2019 Audi Q7 where I still can't use for phone calls as of the 2 second delay.

Hi All,

I have the new USB-C version purchase in May with 3-8 firmware. I have never done an upgrade. It works OK in my Porsche, but does seem to have an occasional audio glitch and I am unsure if it is the glitch mentioned here or just interference.

Anyway, I was initially going to wait for an OTA upgrade, but I now see that OTA upgrades have been bricking them. It also seems that OTA may require a USB upgrade to get to a version before OTA works??? Can someone suggest the safest way to proceed to upgrade my 3-8 delivered unit to latest firmware? Not sure what USB/OTA steps I need to take.

Cheers!

Thanks for Infos. Can you post pictures from yours? What accessory for USB port/s do you have? I only have a adapter for cigarette lighter.
No, i don‘t have wireless charging in car, by buying i thought i don‘t need that...

Anybody have the changelogs from 7/29 Update for CarPlay2air adapter?
I have the 7/27 Update and it works (only startup problems sometimes so i must put adapter out and in from USB port).
I’m very carefully since the update problems with dead adapter and thinking: never change a running system...

Will do. Accessory = what used to be cigarette lighter socket. The particular Wireless charging device i linked is not car specific and needs usb power just like carlinkit does. More choices in devices that are usb then car accessory socket specefic.

Good news GM owners with the 5 minute audio issue. Todays manual update fixed it. I’ve been streaming for over 20 minutes and no audio issue.

Hey Denali, this is spectacular news! I downloaded the firmware. Did you do a standard USB thumb-drive update, on your USB-C Carlinkit v2 adapter? If so, I am on it! Please LMK. Thanks. (Sorry so quiet, been on vacation with the family!)

Again, for clarity, I have a bricked Cplay2Air, so I am wondering if this manual, USB update works on Carlinkitv2 (USB-C) adapters. Please advise. Thanks!!!

Yes I did a standard usb manual update to 7-29-20 on my Carlinkit USB-c adapter. It’s been working really good on 7-29-20 drove 2 hours today on my gmc work truck streaming music and google maps running in satellite mode all was well no audio glitching. Sent out a few text messages via CarPlay, made a few phone calls and all seamed ok. I’d say maybe better then 3-6-20.

I would give it a shot on your Bricked CarPlay2air adapter also it might bring it back to life.

Hi, I have a Carlinkit 2.0 U2W-TPC USB-C device connected to a Renault Megane IV 2017 car and an iPhone X. Carlinkit firmware is up to date (ver. 2020.07.29.1705).

The device works fine but I have two problems:

1.- The call hang up/pick up button on the car steering wheel does not work. I have to pick up and hang up the calls from the button on the screen (Carplay interface). If I connect the phone directly without Carlinkit it works correctly.

2.- When I play songs in any Carplay application (Spotify, Amazon Music, ..etc) the information of the cover, song name is not updated in the car interface (R-Link 9.0). If I connect the phone directly without Carlinkit it shows me the information correctly.

Sorry for my English. Does anyone have similar problems?.

Regards,

Anyone here succeed into updating their device with the 2020.07.01.1234 proposed update without bricking the device and coming from 2020.01.22 update ?

I had the same software version (2020.01.22) on my adapter, then I installed the version 2020.06.16.1452 via USB (as described by Carlinkit!).

After that I did an OTA update - without problems!
I still have the "old" USB-A adapter

Catching up guys. Is the new 7.29 available OTA and if I am running 1.22, if I wanted to upgrade to 7.29, do I have to manually put another FW on first?

I think it's the best when you update to version 2020.06.16.1452
Carlinkit writes that you have to do this

I also come from 2020.01.22 and have „old“ USB-A Adapter CarPlay2air.
Doing OTA Update 2020.07.08 and Adapter still doesn’t work.
Then OTA Update comes out with 2020.07.17 and I tryed this before will do USB Udate to 2020.06.16.
After OTA and since then Adapter works till today...

@2018 Denali -- hey, I have not done a USB firmware update on the Carlinkitv2 (USB-C) before. I don't see any lights on that adapter when trying to do the update, using the one USB thumb-drive/stick that previously worked on the CPlay2Air adapter. Can you please describe what lights you see on your Carlinkitv2 adapter when you do a USB update (if any). I am putting the firmware into the root, of a freshly partitioned and formatted (full format, not quick, FAT32/Default), then sticking it into the adapter, plugging the adapter into a 3a power brick and then plugging the whole thing into a power outlet in my house.

Am I missing something here?

What brand of thumb-drive are you using?

Can anyone confirm/deny that there is any LED light activity on a Carlinkit v2 USB-C adapter during the USB manual update process?

I use a Samsung 32gb usb stick. Picture attached. Works on both CarPlay2air USB-A and Carlinkit USB-c

The light on the Carlinkit with the usb stick connected will be solid red when powered to the wall plug for a few seconds. It will then blink the red light on/off for around 20 seconds. Last the red light will stay solid at this point I let it sit for 2 minutes just to confirm it’s done.

If you previously had a firmware in the usb drive and sent it to the trash bin on your Pc. Make sure you empty the trash bin before ejecting the USB drive.

UPDATE: Just figured out that these adapters are sensitive to the total output amperage of the power brick you use to perform a manual USB update. I thought I was having issues with thumb-drives, but it turned out to be the power adapter I was using. You see, I was using a 5v/3.0a power brick from my rapid wireless charger. I then consulted the little flimsy "manual" that came with my Carlinkit v2 adapter and it states therein, that the input power should be 5v/1~2.1a. Apparently I was giving it too much "juice". So, I switched to a different power brick -- a 5v/2.4a model and low and behold, my adapter started flashing between red/green for about 30 seconds, then went solid red. Will run out to the truck at lunch and verify, but I believe that is a successful firmware update! Woot, woot!

It's easier to update them in the car. There's an update progress showing on the screen and a success notification with Reboot button. It just works. Never had a problem (yet...) with the probably 10 updates I did in the last months.

Well I'll be a blue-nosed gopher!

I too can confirm that my Carlinkit v2(USB-C) adapter, flashed with 2020.07.29.1705, works like a charm! No more 5min audio glitch -- played 20mins+ without so much as a hiccup (not even a millisecond stutter, which is common in most standard Bluetooth-to-head-unit setups). And yes, I have to agree with @2018 Denali, it feels like it is a tad "snappier", changing tracks with steering wheel controls, scrolling around in the interface and phone calls / text messages appear to behave as you would want and expect. So, color me satisfied...if not downright thrilled! We now have a fully functioning wireless CarPlay adapter in GM vehicles. Can I get a "woot, woot"?!?!

Now if the engineers can just build in, either a user-configurable delay or a timed incremental broadcast/re-polling of CarPlay services, so our early powered GM USB ports (when doors open) could be picked up by a head unit that boots AFTER the adapter, we'd be (as my father used to say), sh***ing in tall cotton! But until that time, the delay harness works just fine!

This is a great day for us GM vehicle owners! Thanks to @2018 Denali and everyone else that kept the torch lit on this adventure. Having this group of commiserates has been a blessing! It made it all more tolerable, knowing we weren't alone with all of these weird maladies. Kudos, everyone.

PS> Sadly, my bricked CPlay2Air did not appear to Phoenix from the ashes with this firmware. But I'll keep it around, just in case they figure out a way to resurrect dead units without sending them back.

BUXjr and Denali. I am buying a new carlink and would like it to work in my 2016 Silverado. Upon receiving it what updates should i do. I currently own 1 of each and they both appear to be bricked. Trying not to brick another. Thanks for any help. Carl

I honestly feel 7-29-20 is working great.

Just make sure you use a 5v/2.4a power brick charger. I think that using one that doesn’t provide that has been bricking some units as the firmware update fails midway while updating due to power supply issue like @BUXjr was having issues updating his till he used one with the correct power. I actually use an iPad wall charger when I do the manual updates.

You might want to try to update the two you have hopefully one comes back to life.

Hey Carl,
Well, let's wait to see what firmware is installed on it, when it arrives. But from my experience, 2020.07.29.1705 appears to be a winner in my 2017 GMC Sierra Denali. I did the USB manual update today, without issue on my Carlinkit v2 (USB-C) adapter. Works great.

Agreed. That is also why I wouldn't recommend doing updates in the car--certain situations might cause your car to cut power to the USB outlets (some cars do that if they sense the 12V battery is low, or if a door is opened, etc.).

I think the safest way to flash these things is via USB with an authentic Apple iPad (2.1 or 2.4A) power supply. I'm sure lots of other stuff will work, but given how fragile and expensive these adapters are, I think the less chances taken the better.

I picked up a USB-C version earlier this week and just flashed it to 07.29. Haven't tested it yet, but assuming it works well for me I will flash my old USB-A version to the same version and then try to run some comparisons to see if there is actually any difference in speed between the two.
