Not me, I am sticking to OTA "official" releases unless 8.28 solves for world hunger.

On the topic of bricking,

I have bricked one of the MANY dongles I have owned, lost count. That was via USB. I have updated OTA probably 10 times now counting the first out of box update and I have never bricked via OTA. It does seem less temperamental with far less variables.

But on the variable of USB updates, what worked for me was a 256MB cheapo stick and a good power brick. What did not work and resulted in a brick was using a 32GB stick and using power from a USB charging station.

Do you do OTA updates in the car or do you plug it into a wall-charger?

Here's a very short summary.

There are 2 adapters from a company called Carlinkit, one with a detachable USB-C cable and one with an attached USB-A connector.
The carplay2air is a rebranded version of the USB-A Carlinkit, it is exactly the same device and runs the same firmware.
1) There's also a version for Android head units - make sure you don't have one of those but one that says something like "FOR FACTORY CARPLAY"
2) Plug in the adapter and see what happens. Make sure you use the same USB-Port you usually use for wired Carplay in your car.
3) You should now be able to switch to Carplay on your Infotainmen (the adapter should then display some kind of welcome-screen that shows you instructions on connecting your phone). If not consider updating the adapter via USB or generally check if your adapter works properly in another car (preferably one you know is supported)
Thanks you for the reply. Out of the two versions, USB-A (Attached) and USB-C (Detachable) is there any difference in the hardware worth noting? I saw some discussion about possible differences in the pin out on the cable but wasn't sure if that was just speculation and the HW is the same? Also, I see Carlinkit marketing some as a 2.0 Rev. Any differences there or is it just marketing?

I believe version 2 actually references the new software (I think there was one update that added a lot of new compatibility to cars and introduced OTA updates). At least on Amazon Germany they started marketing both the USB-A and USB-C version with "Version 2".
Their marketing of these things is generally pretty dodgy so it can't be said for sure really.

There's some conflicting information regarding hardware differences. I remember someone a few pages back ripped both adapters open and found the chips to be the same. Some stated that the USB-C version boots faster even with the same firmware and in fact someone noticed a compatibility difference (one showed the song in the dash while the other one didn't or something with steering-wheel-buttons, I don't fully remember) - again, despite having the same firmware on it as the USB-A which originally sparked the theory that there are some differences between the adapter, although I believe neither of those things could be reproduced later with the latest firmware so yeah..

As a general recommendation I'd say if you get one now, get the USB-C one just for the fact that it's the newer one and the cable is detachable, which gives you some added flexibility in terms of placement (+ easy replacement if the cable somehow breaks).
If you already have a USB-A model, I don't see a real reason to justify "upgrading", given that it's not entirely clear if it is actually an upgrade.

In the car.

With Dongle plugged in:
Start car
Let it boot up to CarPlay Screen
On phone/safari go to http://192.168.50.2/
Click update
Dongle will reboot when update is successful
Back to CarPlay

I do it in my garage. I do not disconnect from home wifi.

Mh, gotcha.
That's how I did it in my car, it went all the way to the screen that says Update Successful with the "Reboot" button.
It then automatically rebootet, showed CarPlay very briefly and went out. Since then it's completely dead (no LED at all).
Dodgy stuff. I wonder if it might depend on the car (maybe some cars briefly cut USB Power as the adapter reboots and the car looses CarPlay signal).

Based on all those things I'd theorize that maybe OTA on a wallplug (iPad 10/12W USB adapter preferably) would actually be the safest combination to do an Update.

Hello,
after an OTA update, only the red LED lights up on my Carlinkit 2.0. Please help me. Sorry for my english. I have a plugin a USB Stick (32gb) with the firmware from 22.08.2020

Format the USB stick with FAT and Partition scheme "MBR / Master Boot Record"
Put the "U2W_Update.img" on the stick.
Plug it into the Carlinkit adapter and then plug the adapter into a power adapter (Preferably 10W/12W from an iPad, or something alike)
The adapter should start blinking red/green after a few seconds. Leave it plugged in for 10min or so to be safe, then plug it out and test it in the car again.

Also, maybe try a smaller USB stick (some people had problems with ones that have more than 16gig)

Hey guys, I actually replied to this thread a page or two back with the experience with the CL 2.0c and my 2017 Accord. I just finished reading this whole entire thread...wow some of you guys are troopers! Since mine is almost unusable with the 8/22 update, i'll be the guinea pig.

I reached out to a few members that had 2017 Hondas and which stated they had no problems to see which firmware they were on. I'm guessing it was the 1/22/20 firmware but obviously after reading this thread I can't downgrade that far back :/

Updates:
-Updated connection screen
-For my car, the master source volume controls are switched onto the carplay app no matter which source is selected (FM/USB/XM). So my music was playing off my USB drive and i couldn't put the volume higher or lower for the music playing, it was only controlling the app volume. Must of been a bug, didn't happen when I rebooted it.
-Still freezing under normal sync mode regardless of audio quality. Tried compatible sync mode but the screen lag is about 5 seconds off. Update: Tried 400ms and the lag is there but not by much, still have to test it for a long period of time. 300ms crashed within a few minutes and the dongle rebooted.

Size is 8Mb, whereas other ones are normally about 6-7Mb.

Anyone can see inside the image to see if any different to the others?
For some reason I always jump on these updates - I’m sure I’ll regret it one day! There’s a new UI when booting similar to the one on that new dongle, so their claim that their software is different seems rather suspect. That aside it does look much nicer IMO!

All else seems rather much the same.

Interesting. It seems that the new "JoyeAuto" device is the same hardware as Carlinkit and Car2playair.

Update: I was able to flash it back to 08/04, however what I had to do was plug the carlinkit unit into the power adapter without the USB drive with the firmware on it until it showed a solid red bar. Then I plugged the USB drive with the firmware on it, and it flashed red/green, for maybe 20 seconds, then went solid red. I was sure in the past I've plugged the usb drive with the firmware in before plugging it into the power adapter.

ToddM, please post result if you are going to brave the OTA update that came out today. Curious as you had the same error when we tried the previous update.

Hello everyone,

A question, on which site you go to download the firmware?
I used to go to an address but when I've been trying for several months I have a 404 error I don't know why ..

While it makes sense that USB updating sounds like it would be more stable, in my experience that isn’t true for this particular device. There is some sort of verification or finalization step that sometimes doesn’t go through over USB, and it seems to have the potential to brick the dongle.

I’ve been in contact with JoyeAuto and they said it was a different dongle, seems not after all!

I was trying to ask if support my car as others haven’t, they advertised Vauxhall 2016-2019, but then said might not work, and they haven’t tested it! So seems they are all the same and all claims are to be taken with a pinch of salt.

The extra screen maybe why the update file is a little bigger then.

Does the new screen stay on before connection for a while? What’s its point of being there?

Yeah companies that rebrand products never want to admit that theirs is simply a knockoff of something else. They want you to think it's different (and perhaps better) so you'll buy theirs instead of the Carlinkit. Same deal with Carplay2Air. I don't think they've ever admitted that it's just a Carlinkit inside even though that's exactly what it is.

That may even be part of their contract with Carlinkit, so that Joy2Auto handles all the customer support for it.

Right so I just did the USB update to the 08.28 image, interface was the same old one. Then I checked the OTA and it said I need to update but thats put me at the 08.22 version.

What am I missing? I was looking forward to a new interface.

It's a nice touch, but I don't see the startup interface staying that way for long. It is very similar to the Pioneer demo screen. They might take some crap for it.

I still haven't heard back from joyeauto on my rather pointed questions regarding that "new" wireless CarPlay adapter.
