It had the hardware if built after Oct 1 2017. In June 2019, they made available a firmware update providing the CarPlay functionality. In the US they were asking for 199$ while here in Canada they were asking 70$ Cdn (~50$ usd). There was also a firmware version made available in the “wild” And exchange thru a public forum and most who used it succeeded their update but some “bricked” the unit. I was not going to take that chance and had it done at Lexus

That’s insane. $199 US to turn on hardware they installed. Especially for a Lexus that markets itself as a premium brand. Guessing an MX goes for $50,000 US or more and they want to squeeze $200 bucks out of you. I’m a European car guy. BMW did the same thing for a while.

Agree but was happy to be in Canada for this one as 70$ cdn was worth it for me. But in the end, some owners in the US got it for free from their dealer, others at half price, etc. it seems to be a ”dealer‘s choice” in the US.

Glad the device is working for you. Fingers crossed.

OK, received my CarPlay2Air today (Ordered March 8th, arrived in Canada from China of the 24th)
Flawless installation and update, took 5-10 minsutes including read the installation notes
All steering buttons work but got a little (~1 sec) delay for the skip song and play/pause buttons
Set-up is in a 2018 Lexus NX300 who was upgraded to CarPlay functionalities thru the manufacturer firmware update
Did the initial installation under iOS 13.3.1 and just updated to 13.4 and all works fine

I also noticed a 1 second delay between switching songs. In addition, moving around the cursor on the display seems a little slow as well. I wonder if it’s because it’s connected through WiFi. Anyway, not that big of a deal. It’s a small compromise to pay for wireless CarPlay.

Same here and also agree it’s a small compromise to get wireless CarPlay. Pretty sure it due to the WiFi connection but not an issue for me.

On an additional note, after a successful installation in my Lexus NX, I tried it in the Nissan Murano but this was a no go. The Nissan’s are not listed as a compatible brand and I can confirmed it not even activating the wireless component of device.

Wireless CarPlay dongle = Lexus 1, Nissan 0 !!

At least their supported device list is accurate.

It’s not. Say it works with Vauxhall and it doesn’t. Just say to wait for update....since Sep ‘19!

Contacted and their answer was “it should work” .....but doesn’t.
You got the Carlinkit right? This is the support company you are referring to correct? Full disclosure, I have read this thread on bookends, I saw you initially bought the Carlinkit.

Yes I have CarLinkIt. But CarPlay2Air is the same product, use same updates, interface etc, been discussed above as well.

They insist it does work, I contacted CarPlay2Air who quoted works on all Vauxhall 2016 on, then when I said tried it they came back and said, oh doesn’t work on Insigna...?

It’s just confusing and we are the testers. Some have great experience with it others don’t. I just wouldn’t believe them on their advertising, try find someone who has tried already is best way.

Understood. Are you dealing with Carlinkits support or are they one in the same? I’m sure both companies support and claims are piss poor.

Certainly does not work on (all) ‘2016-2020 Chevrolet‘

Agreed. I have a 2018 Volt and it works, but with some very annoying caveats:
  1. The adapter doesn’t seem to reinitialize when I restart the car. It’s never detected, not even the “connecting” screen. If I unplug it and plug it back in, it starts just fine.
  2. Audio gets choppy after several minutes. That’s the real dealbreaker for me. If I change the AirPlay output from CarPlay to phone and back, it’s fine for another several minutes then breaks up.

  3. Support has been awful. They don’t read my issues and give me a boilerplate message about disconnecting my Apple Watch and all other Bluetooth devices to connect to the adapter. No matter how many times I explain the actual issue in different ways, they don’t get it. And they never address the audio issue.

If it is an Intellilink Vauxhall version doesn’t work unfortunately.

Can you go into your settings and about and tell me versions etc please? Never had my CarLinkIt version to work ever.

Thanks

@MrMister111

Apologies for the very late reply.
can you snap a picture of your HeadUnit's homeScreen?

Anyhow, is this what you wanted to check?

And here is what the HomeScreen looks like... [same as Intellilink R4.0 ???]

If there is any other info that you want to see or know about the HeadUnit on my vehicle, I'd be glad to check for you.
btw, whats the exact variant and year model car do you have?

Cheers!

To resolve number 2 do the manual update to 3-6-20 using image file in this directory.

If I do a manual update to the 6th March version, can I go back to the 22nd January or is that not possible.

I remember someone saying that you can only go forwards in version numbers and not back but somebody else said you can.

I’ll have to check again version numbers it mine is an Intellilink and looks like yours above. It has Sat Nav built in, its not the R4.0 but Navi 900, basically the same, looks the same but built in Sat Nav.

So your saying your dongle (CatLinkIt or CarPlay2Air?) works fine?

Can you do a video to show what it does/how/procedure as noting on mine does.

I’ve updated dongle manually to different versions, reset my iPhone, Bluetooth etc, even factory reset the car system.

It just flashes up CarPlay icon on screen and then disappears. Never had it once connected.

SO, with all this Corona virus downtime, I decided to read this thread from end to end. I am on post 550. Kind of like asking, what happens at the end of a book before reading to the end, but what happened to the Alanplum dude who took over the thread and sounded like he worked for CarPlay2Air or was an investor?

He’s still here, he doesn’t work for them he’s an enthusiastic tech supporter and nice guy. He’s helped so many out and become a friend. To bloke.

Yup...I’m still here watching. I own 3 of the dongles.

work for them....no
investor....no
enthusiastiac tech supporter......yes (Cheers Deggy!!)

Fancy trying to get mine to work

Vauxhall Intellilink system, never worked, mines a CarLinkIt, updated USB to various versions.

Tried it once early on, on a Mercedes, so know dongle works.

Just get a flash up of CarPlay icon and disappears.

Damn, you all ruined the ending. My unit is stuck in Jersey. Two days now and no movement. Trying to accumulate some toys to play with for the weekend. I do have my parts coming to make my Gas Fireplace "smart" and to turn on and off with Alexa, relays, switches and such, should eat up some time. I guess I 'could' go out and start cleaning the yard from winter, but that's no fun.

@alanplum, glad you're getting all these props. Good work. Where I stopped reading, sounded like you were about to get lynched by people disputing cc charges, unhappy with communication, firmware update after firmware update, premium product vs. not a premium product, etc. and you rebutting them somewhat. I definitely could see both sides. My approach is, if it doesn't work, I am just going to eat the $119. Nothing worse than emailing Chinese support and having them ignore the questions, especially when it comes to it's not working and I want my money back. They do this on purpose, languages challenges as a convenience.

All 3 of mine work perfectly. Volvo XC40 and SEAT Ibiza. 3rd is a spare used for testing firmwares.

I love the product but I understand for some it can be frustrating. I still follow the thread, but as mine work great I don’t have much to contribute.

The thing with yours is the dongle DOES work. Just not in your car.

I have a Mitsubishi Outlander where the dongle also does not work in that car, but it works elsewhere. It’s down the the car infotainment being c**p.
