Thanks, this thread seems to defining have the most info online in relation to these devices. Is a shame that it’s diluted so much by the forum format and being constrained to the one thread.
Would be good to have a ‘sticky’ post to confirm all the details which would eliminate a lot of questions but alas.

At the moment on the board all I can see is the arm processor and the RAM next to it. There is obviously another sensitive component under the shielding which is intriguing too.

I didn’t know there are any cars from GM with CarPlay and no gps, in part because I’ve never seen a GM car with CarPlay that also didn’t have nav. What model is it they sell that way?

My Chevy has Carplay and no nav. But I dunno if it has GPS builtIN or not.

btw, I found the March 18 firmware but it is in a subfolder under "hicar"

3.18

there's more version, but they are all in a subfolder. below are the ones I randomly checked if available.

4.01?

4.02?

4.03

5.08?

5.11?

The only problem as we can see from the URLs, is what does "hicar" mean? are those firmware compatible with our dongles OR are they for a totally different device?

On another note, there is also a "U2HW" firmware. but I'm pretty sure this is for a totally different device.

Agreed. Might just be time for a new thread with a really good wiki lead in with link to this.

Nice job!! Now we can really test and compare.

Yes there is some really interesting stuff in here, and some people really trying to figure out out and improve it which is unfortunately mixed with 'does my car work with this' and 'my car does work' and 'is carlinkit and carplay2air the same'

Nice job!! Now we can really test and compare.

The hicar folder was found earlier in this thread and thought to be a 'beta' folder used by the devs.

I also see that Huawei are producing a system called hicar which is a system to link into existing manufacturers systems and an OS to lay on top of this.

It may be that Carlinkit are working with Huawei and/or borrowing their resources in relation to this?

EDIT:

This link will show you the latest in the hicar folder

This will show you the latest in the 'public' version

Interesting, although not sure what Hicar OS actually is, hardware or software and what the relationship is to our dongles. Not much in the video.

Thanks for publicizing that HICAR info had missed it my first time though this long thread. I may archive some of those for fun in labeled folders... No idea if the 3.18 one is consistent with shipping 3.18. Nice to see development continuing. I have not seen others here that I am aware of test those HICAR builds. I would be cautious doing so if my device was past its return window and especially if the firmware one is running is bug free.

The files do not work with Carplay2Air's unit. Tested using a USB drive I successfully used with the CP2A in the past. I did not test with my USB-C unit as I don't want to jinx my luck.

Speaking of my USB-C unit, I switched the cable it came with to an Anker USB-C/M to USB-A/M 3.1 cable for both length and flexability/durability. There was also a minor bonus in that it connects with my Pioneer HU quicker as well as is more stable (the short cable did give me a couple of random disconnection issues the first few days I had it).

Can confirm that those newer updates don’t install on the V1 of Carplay2Air.

Nice, I have my flat cable and adapter waiting. A USB-C unit is arriving tomorrow with 1.22 on it. I bought it from a member here. I'm impatient. I am hoping the USB-C that is on the way from China has 3.18 on it, then I can really compare. For reference, 1.22 worked perfectly on my CP2A.

Purchased from Carlinkit 02.05.20 on AliExpress and arrived today with 3.18 on it.

I haven't had a v1 to compare to but I have opened it up to see what the processors are.

The Carlinkit USB-C dongle uses the same physical chipset as the older CP2A/Carlinkit dongle. Thanks to @chill991 and @shadowswan for opening up their units and posting the info. Aside from switching to USB-C and a shiny new case, the changes are primarily in the firmware not the hardware - although they might have also refined the circuit board design.

For reference:

@shadowswan

The shielded component you saw is the wifi & Bluetooth chipset.

The "hicar" subfolders have always existed on the http firmware site, and the firmware files within have never worked on the Carlinkit adapters we have (despite having the same "U2W_Update.img" file name). The only firmware files that work on our adapters are/were the ones in the root of the date folders on the site, e.g. http://112.74.112.110/download/2020-03-07/U2W_Update.img (those files have since been deleted--wish I had thought to archive them all!)

As I recall, on the 112.74.112.110 site there were date folders for every single day (or almost every day), and there were "tmp" and "hicar" subfolders within each one. But only some date folders contained a U2W_Update.img in the root--those were the ones we could flash. On the site there were directories/firmware files dating back to late 2019, maybe even earlier.

Why Carlinkit removed the updates for our adapters, I don't know. I can only speculate that they did not want us flashing them--maybe that site was only intended to be used internally or for beta testers. Maybe they just didn't want to have to support users trying to upgrade via USB. But I am pretty confused as to why they've never posted a firmware file newer than Jan 22nd to their auto-update server. In my experience the March 4th firmware is far and away faster and more reliable than Jan 22nd. It really makes me wonder if the person/persons who administer that server either died or quit during the coronavirus epidemic. It's a long story but there was also an "activation" server set up for people who used 2019-era Carlinkits to upgrade to the 2.0 firmware release in mid December (to the person who was wondering, references to version 2.0 are talking about the new-generation firmware, not hardware). I think they set up the activation process to deter counterfeiters. Anyway, it was normally a seamless process. You'd flash the 2.0 firmware, connect to 192.168.50.2 the first time and it would automatically activate the adapter. Well, after late January that process stopped working entirely. Anyone who tried to upgrade to the 2.0 firmware after that was locked out (the car's display would say "Activation required" and the 192.168.50.2 site would ask for a username and password). To this day, the only way past that is to contact Carlinkit support and manually activate by sending them a log file, at which point they give you a unique login to enter on that page.

Could just be coincidence, but their operations/server infrastructure hasn't ever really worked or been updated since late January. It makes me wonder if they can't access it to update/fix it. Just speculation on my part--I could very well be wrong.

Anyway, I'm happy for the most part on 20200304. Does anyone else experience Siri's voice getting cut off when announcing what music you just asked her to play? Like if I press the steering wheel button and say "Play Rubber Soul by the Beatles" she'll say "Now playing, Rubber Soul by the Bee--". It's like it cuts her off before she can say the last syllable. I've never seen anyone else mention it (and I think I even brought it up here in a previous post), so maybe it's just an issue on Ford Sync3 cars. Obviously not a big deal in the scheme of things, but more of an annoyance I hope will be fixed at some point.

Overall I am very pleased with the purchase. I'm still sort of amazed each time the CarPlay interface pops up while my phone is in my pocket. This adapter finally turned CarPlay into an everyday thing for me. Previously I only bothered to use it on longer trips or when I needed turn-by-turn directions. Now it's basically become my car's de facto interface for maps, music, calls, texts, etc.

My Pioneer gets that on 3.18 also. As well as the navigation voice sometimes getting cutoff/jumbled when starting a route in Apple Maps - although that was mostly resolved by replacing the short USB-C cable included with my unit.

I’m running 1.22 and Siri gets cut off slightly when, for example, I say Siri play Fleetwood Mac, she says something to the effect, not playing Fleetwood and Mac is cut off because the music starts to play. No big deal for me.

Edit: I also concur, I am one of the lucky ones. The damn thing just works perfectly all the time. No issues with connecting, no issues with switching between voice calls and back to music. Audio quality sounds outstanding. The only thing I would mention is that I get random audio millisecond drops every now and then, like WiFi interfere. Skipping tracks could be a little faster like wired, but from what I’ve heard even Apple wireless CarPlay lags skipping tracks.

Like I mentioned, USB C with 1.22 with arrive tomorrow. I will use this until the next USB C arrives from wherever it is coming from China. I’m hoping it has 3.18. I should get a good feel for any differences. I can’t imagine my experience with 1.22 getting any better. You just confirmed the Siri cutoff with 3.04 so I doubt 3.18 will solve it.

I guess I’m hoping USBC will boot a little faster but it really about 15 seconds now. More toys to play with. Glad I will have both to play with because of 3.18 doesn’t work as good as 1.22 then I’ll have the 1.22 unit. One will go up for sale. Already sold my CP2A on eBay for a killing.

It does appear that HiCar is a joint effort between Carlinkit and Huawei. It's one of the items on the Carlinkit homepage banner/slideshow.

Further google searching and reading indicates that HiCar is intended to be 3 things:

1) an alternative to Carplay & Android Auto
2) a method of controlling your vehicle using your Huawei phone
3) a full operating system for connected vehicles

So nothing appealing to us as an alternative to our dongles.

I agree. But honestly I would say this is why support for the dongles has dried up. Carlinkit's probably putting all of it's resources into HiCar at this time.
I hope they get back to it though. Why would they launch the new USB-C version? Not a question for you, just thinking out loud in terms of cutting off development at the same time they tout a new product?

It's not a new product per se. Just a new casing and switching away from hardwired cabling to replaceable cabling. The same hardware is inside.
