Makes me wonder... When fans and suppliers start swinging for the fences with ideas like this, I wonder how much attention Apples gives it. At one time I could see Apple purposely ignore a good idea because they didn't come up with it. But that was when Apple excelled at giving us products we didn't know we needed. Anymore, it feels like they are mostly following the heard.

Anyway, I still miss Graffiti on my Handspring. Still think I could write faster that way than I can type on my iPhone. A stylus might bring that back!

Could absolutely see it happening at some point. Would be surprised if it was this year.

Nice that we have a Galaxy Note alternative after eight years. Has iOS added native pencil writing to text transcription yet? It's a nice option to pencil the url in browser, pencil new contact or calendar entry creation, etc. Last I checked there still wasn't.

The key point...it's a rendering, not an actual manufactured product.
Not much of a risk when you're not actually spending any money.

Really isn't the same thing because you don't use the Apple Pencil to navigate the UI and do everything, its an accessory mostly for drawling. What Steve was talking about there was a stylus used to navigate the UI.

Perfect. You nailed it. And this is the differentiation for those who completely obfuscated what Steve Jobs meant between a stylus and the differentiation of what the Apple Pencil truly is intended for.

It's certainly easy to remember what Steve Jobs said about a stylus. But when he said that wasn't he talking about the primary means of interacting with the device? As long as a stylus/Apple Pencil isn't mandatory for use why would anyone bash this?

However, charging it is another question completely... No way they'll have room inside the phone to store it like the Galaxy Note, but I can't see them going with the magnetic attachment on the side either. It's Apple so I'm sure they will come up with something clever, but my mind is racing with the different possibilities.

Not always something clever

I really hope this is true. Remember all the hate for a stylus that was spewed around here over the Galaxy Note line? I can't wait to see those people trip over their tongues explaining why it's good when Apple does it and bad when Samsung does it.

The price should be interesting too considering most phones with a stylus include it. A $100 up fee for a phone stylus will be a joke. I still remember the quote from Samsung about their Notes that they'd rather just bundle the basics like a stylus and make money selling fun stuff like VR camera modules.

“Nobody wants a stylus, we have ten!”

Just finished Walter Isaacson’s wonderful SJ biography last night. Steve said it himself after appointing Tim Cook (to COO?), before his health was in a truly desperate state, that Cook was “not a product person.” Everyone was creating fragmented computing experiences in the 90s but Apple was the “experience innovator” in the personal computing space, and Steve did it by creating amazingly beautiful and simple hardware (and the software that made the hardware magical). That culture doesn’t exist anymore under Cook. It’s why Jony left. It’s why Apple doesn’t release innovative hardware anymore. Without SJ’s return in 1997 Apple could never have gotten back to “the intersection of technology and liberal arts,” and they never will again. It’s not Apple’s fault. Steve brought the juice, and once the juice had been brought it can’t be forgot.

Sir/ma'am, this is a Dairy Queen.

Why such a sweeping statement over a case maker making a rendering based on a sketchy and (so far) uncorroborated rumor?

Note-taking and tiny drawings... Worth the $$ and the apparently awkward means of carrying it? At least with the Galaxy Note, it’s included with the phone and always stored in the phone itself.

If they managed to fit the Pencil inside the 11 Pro... Max?... then I call BS on the headphone jack removal :D (kidding)

It's certainly easy to remember what Steve Jobs said about a stylus.

I think ‘remembering and understanding’ are two different things. Clearly there are examples in this thread where others don’t understand what Steve Jobs was referring to with a stylus versus what the Apple Pencil is actually truly intended for today. It’s not mutually exclusive with a stylus and Apple Pencil.

As long as a stylus/Apple Pencil isn't mandatory for use why would anyone bash this?

Why would Apple make the Apple Pencil mandatory? Of course it will be an accessory, because it will never be built into the iPhone, but I think the fact is, that this is a render, not an actual product that’s being leaked.

I can see all the promos now: "Started jotting down an idea on your iPhone only for it to grow out of proportion? Easily pick up where you left off on the bigger canvas of the iPad!"

I hope they can do better than that! ;)

Dual nano sim. Bigger battery. Mini Apple Pencil. The exciting news has no bounds today. Please hold any additional exciting rumors about the upcoming iPhone until tomorrow.

They wouldn't. That's my point. It's an optional accessory so why care?

You're both wrong though. Devices back when the comment was made like the Palm Treo 700x I had could be operated with touch or stylus (it didn't require a stylus). Also, the stylus was siloed so less chance of losing than magnetic clip on like on the iPad Pro which was largely a profit decision since it costs $129 to buy/replace vs free/low cost on other devices.

So you’re saying you didn’t understand Steve’s comment also. :D Noted. In addition, your comment serves no relevance to what Steve Jobs was actually inferring, the Apple Pencil is a completely different tool separated away from an actual stylus function that served at that time. As I mentioned before, they’re not mutually exclusive based off the comparisons in this thread.

I use a mini and a pro for pencil input - I enjoy using the mini for it's size - but I'm always in a 'zoom window' for goodnotes and zoomed in for notability... It's just a compromisingly small display.

Now make it even smaller on the iPhone? I'll be reminded of jot on a palm pilot. It seems that everything Steve Jobs saw in the iPhone is lost.

Sorry. My last response to this was apparently 'frivolous'.

I'll elaborate on ''.

The Apple Pencil is so much more than what styluses used to be. Steve turned his nose up them because he could, and way back when, the finger simply made more sense considering the original iPhones capabilities.

Now, I personally think it would make sense to extend Apple Pencil use to iPhones, not least of all because of the screen sizes
.
