The cases are really ugly. Kudos on that.

I am a bit disappointed with the size growth though. I was planning to get the new iPad pro, but now wonder if I should not just get the current one. I do not really need a screen bigger than 9.7" (but want the keyboard and pen, so the new "iPad 9.7" is not really an option), and small size and weight are quite important to me.

Why not Apple discontinue the 9.7 ipad as it will be similar to 10.5 form factor, and keep iPad mini alive for those who don't need bigger iPads
Apple is keeping the $300-ish iPad alive for those that don't want to pay $600 for an iPad. What percentage of iPad mini buyers bought it because it was the cheapest iPad and what percentage bought it because they preferred its size? I am sure Apple has an idea of what these percentages are.

No, if I want this, then I want some laptop-like functions for my device that is primarily a tablet. You might be ignoring the dedicated connector on iPad Pros for an external keyboard if you think "turning your iPad into a laptop" is such a crazy idea & that Apple wouldn't consider it. And it's a function that Apple's primary competitors do have (Chromebooks on the low end, Surface Pros on the high).
The Smart Keyboard allows faster typing on iPad. That doesn't make it a laptop. That is 1 of a thousand differences from a laptop.

Asking for mouse support makes it clear that you don't understand what those meaningful differences are, or why they exist to begin with.

Where is the story about the beta wallpapers?

https://9to5mac.com/2017/05/16/ios-...ew-wallpapers-to-12-9-ipad-pro-download-here/

Here is the link. It's not concrete or anything, but it is rare for Apple to introduce new wallpapers without either a major software update or new hardware. It is currently limited to the 12.9, which makes sense because the 10.5 is supposed to have the same resolution. If you connect the dots, you can see both the new 10.5 and 12.9 using these new wallpapers in marketing. Knowing Apple, they'll be pinching in and out of those pictures to show a close up of the tiny people to get across the increased resolution.

Interesting. iOS 10 on iPad? Which model?
We have 3 here - 2 iPad Air 2's and an iPad Pro 9.7 and all exhibit same behaviour.
It simply doesn't work and never has in iOS 10 unless you specifically swipe right under the tab bar. It doesn't work anywhere else - simply invokes slide over as you mention.
iPad Air 2 here on iOS 10.3.2. I usually use the bottom third but just tested at about the top quarter and it's pretty forgiving there as well. Only when I get close to the center does it invoke Slide Over.

In Safari you can swipe from left to right to go back a page. You used to be able to (and still can on iPhone) swipe from right to left to go forward.

It still does work but only if you are VERY precise. You can use a flat finger right underneath the address tab and you can make it work.

Not the biggest issue in the world but annoying nonetheless.

Ah that one, yes I can get that to work on my iPhone but it's a bit fiddly. With the iPad it just brings up the app selection for the split screen. But if I can get it to work if I move my thin, slowly and flat as you say. Not very easy at all.

3D Touch won't happen, true tone is likely, optimized large screen iOS is hopeful, and you already have an iCloud filesystem available now.

I initially agread, because the ipad has had no taptic engine/haptic feedback all these years. However, this could change, since there are rumors now that this ipad will have a homebutton like the iphone 7, so it will have some form of a taptic engine. So...

But my guess is 3d touch will be in the ipad, but only when using the pencil and giving a firm press.
[doublepost=1495523634][/doublepost]I only want 3 things:

-a trackpad on a new smart keyboard for using text intensive apps/tasks.
-a few more pro features in ios 11, to increase productivity, and a little more flexibility.
-a matt black version

And a bit dissapointed that the 10.5 will be slightly taller, so the smart keyboard of the 9.7 won't fit.

But that doesn' t surprise me these days.

Lol, no. If you need this, you need a laptop. Stop trying to make the iPad into a laptop. It is not.

People that NEED laptops for work, don't understand that it is not "their work" that iPad is intended to serve.

Apple are pushing smart keyboards on the pro line - but surely if you need a keyboard you might as well just get a laptop?

If you have a keyboard attached and are typing stuff, then it becomes awkward to select text/icons on the screen. You have to reach over the keyboard and the screen isn't anchored so it wobbles as you press. Also less accurate for selections because your arm is extended compared to if you're using it in your lap or something.

So a bluetooth mouse option would IMO be a welcome and natural extension to sit alongside the smart keyboards.

on topic - disappointed if that mockup on page one is true. Chassis seems quite a bit larger. I wasn't sure they'd be literally able to get a 10.5" display in a 9.7" chassis but wasn't expecting it to be so much larger. Also makes me wary for the iphone 8. Has anyone done mockups on how feasible it would be to get a 5.5" display on the standard phone size chassis?

These images have just appeared on Twitter! they are case manufacturers mockups so i'm not sure how accurate they really are!!

Best Apple product out there today. I'll probably go for that 12.9 when my Air 2's battery finally goes south.

A collection of new images today claim to show cases for Apple's upcoming 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro devices. The 10.5-inch iPad Pro is believed to be an update similar in vein to the iPhone 8, with a size that remains close to that of the 9.7-inch iPad Pro, but includes a larger 10.5-inch display thanks to shrinking bezels.

Benjamin Geskin has shared the iPad Pro accessory images on Twitter today, showing off cutouts for the Lightning port, speaker grilles, microphone, and vertically-aligned camera. The microphone cutout is placed on the top rear of both new iPads, similar to its location on the newest 9.7-inch iPad. For the current 12.9-inch models, however, the microphone cutout sits on the right side of the iPad, above the volume buttons.

The cases include multiple large cutouts for what appears to be four speakers, with two on top of the case and two on the bottom surrounding the Lightning port. This suggests that the 10.5-inch iPad is likely to continue supporting the stereo audio system of the iPhone 7 and 9.7-inch iPad Pro update. The wood cases also include side inserts for Apple Pencil storage.

Also on top of the case is the expected cutout for the lock button, and the 3.5mm headphone jack will still be included on the 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pros launching this year, according to the new cases. Volume rockers remain on the traditional right side of the iPad cases, as well.

With production on the 10.5-inch iPad reportedly ramping up, the device could debut as early as WWDC, which takes place two weeks from today. For the smaller-screened iPad mini, recent rumors have suggested that Apple might discontinue the devices due to likely cannibalization from the 5.5-inch iPhone Plus devices. According to Geskin, the iPad mini will remain off of Apple's update list -- for 2017 at least -- with his Tweet stating, "No new iPad mini this year."

If Steve Jobs were al...ah never mind .
Would love to never mind, but you keep bringing it up. Clever, though ...

I know right...why would Apple manufacture an iPad? Considering it's the best made tablet on the market and conforms into Apple's ecosystem perfectly. Not to mention, the number of Universities/Colleges, Doctors Offices, Schools, Government agencies, and other businesses all use the iPad one way or the other in my City.

I know, it's hard to believe people still use the iPad.
You'd be amazed, if you were either a musician or a public speaker, at how wonderful the iPad is as a music page viewer and/or speaker's notes device. They are just right with the appropriate apps installed. They also are perfect for watching Netflix or Amazon movies while in bed. Phones are too small for the same use. Except for photography or talking, iPads fill in a great vacuum between phones and laptops/desktops for content provision.

You and Tim Cook seem to disagree on this point. We have that in common.

He doesn' t disagree with Tim Cook. Tim Cook said that it could replace old PC's for a lot of people, because it has better hardware and is easier to operate/ navigate than a lot of old PC' s.
He never said that it could replace all business laptops. The other thing that he said was that he sees a great opportunities for the ipad to be used in the enterprise market. He never said that the ipad could replace all these enterprise laptops and workstations.
I guess if Apple wouldn' t have added the PRO name, we would not have all these misunderstandings.

Ipad is for content viewing, and more suitable and portable than a Mac to do that.
IPad Pro is for viewing content and better suited for creating content(pencil, keyboard) than the regular ipad, and could replace pc's for some consumers, and can be a great device in enterprise for " on the go" taking notes, etc.

But in its current form and os, could never replace a workstation or business laptop, and apple/Tim cook, never said that.

Yes I tried again and I can actually just get it working at the bottom of the screen as well, again with the flat finger. Still think it's broken to an extent. Used to be much easier and comparable with page back as long as you avoided that central area.
Perhaps you have bigger (or smaller fingers than me) :D

+1 for Matte Black. Would love to see this in the 10.5

Looks good, just want some color info now. Matte black??

Yep, that looks accurate, although I can't speak for the physical model, presumingly so if it is based off the CAD model.

Posted this on 9to5mac already... where they had a photo of another case for the 10.5" iPad... with a current 9.7" iPad in it. Before anyone asks... yes... the screen doesn't look AT LOT bigger. But the mockup is still accurately showing 9.7" and 10.5" displays!

Well.. I did a rough mockup based on these cases... and well... it will NOT be bezel-less like AT ALL.

What I did:
Took an image of a current iPad... and scaled it to be 5mm wider and 10mm taller. The cases seem to be bigger by that amount... approximately. One mm more or less won't make much of a difference here... I guess...

Overlayed it with a 4:3 rectangle of 10.5".

As you can see the bezels would be slightly smaller... but not dramatically.

I 100% agree with you, after I saw the images showing the Ipad itself was bigger I immediately thought "Well there goes bezel less"... Im so disappointing I totally see everything out the window now, I bet you it will still have a home button to. I was so amped up on getting this Ipad but now im less excited for it, I will still be getting it tho I really wanna upgrade from my Mini its just sad that all the amazing features wont be there anymore I bet it will just be a normal Ipad with a bigger screen size faster processor and better camera...

Looks nice, hopefully IOS 11 takes advantage of the bigger display as well as iPad specific features.

Yup, went searching and found the original reddit thread. 3208x3208 is the resolution of the wallpapers. That's the default native parallax resolution for the current 12.9" right? If so, your hypothesis makes perfect sense.

Seems that the 10.5" model is going to be very iterative though, nothing like bezelless at all, and nothing like the the same size as the 9.7" Pro. It is considerably bigger in relative terms. Don't know anymore if I could justify that...it will be a hard sell - will have to come with some OS features and app upgrades that make it compelling as a proper laptop replacement.

I'm not even talking about workflows, file system, etc. I'm talking about desktop equivalent productivity software. If I could get iWork and Office in fully realised desktop feature parity versions on iOS, I could leave my laptop at home and work on my mini already. I am very open to changing my workflows, but the apps have to deliver. As lots of others have said, it isn't the hardware that's the problem!

That said... have to agree with you - if there is a matte black option it will be pretty hard for me to not smash the buy button on a 256GB LTE one of these...

This is what I find the most sad aspect of the recent track record of the iPad: the hardware is already pretty good, but the software limits it so much. And I am certainly including file system and such things in the list.

I am completely with you. I have been very open to going iPad and iPhone only, but I need a little more flexibility on the OS side and we really need them to loosen up whatever restrictions are holding back developers. There is no reason why we don't have desktop level applications on current hardware.

The change in size is a bit more than that based off my information, however a rumor later in the day seemed to contradict both my information and your mockup as they said the width stays the same. I don't believe that, although I would like it to happen. Personally I don't mind if it's larger, as it would mean a better smart keyboard for the smaller Pro.

I am planning on a picking up a new 12.9" IPP if they release one. My hopes for it (in particular) and then my use case:

- smaller bezel, overall size
- 29w charger (!)
- upgraded Touch ID (don't think there is any chance it'll be embedded - the bezel won't be that small)
- A11x
- iSight camera on the right side bezel (I cannot find anyone else that seems to want this but for me (and especially for the 12.9"), 95% of the time I use FaceTime it will be in landscape mode. The camera on the side is annoying and IMHO pointless
- thinner, lighter (but again unlikely)

Use case:

I use my current 9.7" IPP all day and my 12" Macbook barely at all (it is slower at everything) (have a 5k iMac at home). I travel a lot so my plan is to carry two iPads - the 9.7" plus new 12.9". I know that sounds crazy but I currently travel with the iPad and MB... I want the bigger screen for work (especially for notes/ marking up PDFs. light Excel work) and for movies/ TV. But much prefer the smaller iPad in the hand when reading a book or Pocket, browsing, twitter etc - eg when in my lap on a plane I will be using the 9.7, but when I open up the tray, pullout the keyboard and do work, edit video or watch movies, it will be the 12.9".

So? The PostPC era was only an excuse for lamented Mac development ?
Or in the PostPC era, Post=current.
So logical - only at Apple

OT. Gee man, someone thought about a pen tray in the last 5 minutes.
Because Joni the Overrated once again missed the opportunity to design internal pencil storage with integrated charging
So I guess the pen still doubles as a selfie stick, cracky and wacky for another 5 years...

Anyway, the Innovation Roadmap for the coming years has become clear:
Shoving off 1 millimeter bezel yearly.
Sooo exciting what 2019 will bring...
