Only use my debit card when purchasing online. Don’t own a CC.

Is the debit card tied to an account dedicated to online purchases...so you can control the account balance?

I feel credit cards are a better fit for online purchases, particularly recurring ones.

I've been advocating for a long time that we should abolish cash all-together. Most banks offer free checking, so I don't understand why any law abiding citizen would be unable to obtain an account.

I rarely use cash as well. Everything I purchase is through my bank card or CC if I think the place is a little more seedy. Or I want the extra security of using CC over my check card. The only place I used to use cash only for is the barber shop. Even that's now taking Cards. So I now only take cash out if I want to buy something from someone personally or pay a family member for something. If there's an apocalypse and the card readers don't work then I guess I have bigger fish to fry.

Yes. I have an account I use online. I generally keep £500 in there. Just put more in if I’m buying something more expensive.

I have not carried cash in over 5 years, all my transactions are done through Google pay or my card. I use a bank that has zero fees so using cash is totally redundant. If a shop does not have eftpos then they won't get my business, it's that simple.

What about tipping , soda machines. Parking...
No tipping in Australia, soda machines have tap and go, ditto parking machines.

Ah now we're going to say it's just law abiding citizens who shun cash? If we're going down any of that set of rabbit holes, then we should probably ask the moderators to move the thread to PRSI sub forum. :D

Ahh I was going to ask how you manage say making reservations online (say for air, train or hotel reservations). I do have a couple of credit cards, and a paypal account but generally still prefer cash.

I usually carry a couple $20 bills but that's it. I'll sometimes have a $100 just in case. Usually prefer credit or debit, though usually AMEX.

Maybe I don't want anyone to be able to track what I buy at the Romance store.
Romance store?

Cash is many centuries old system, it will be around at least 10 years then will be history.

Yep true, in case scammers hacked your account its better to risk credit than your own money.

Tipping still common in cafe's and restaurants here in Melbourne but its not like US. If the service is bad i don't tip.

I still find myself wishing some folks had some cash on them, because of the problems they're having with their card and the delay it is causing.

Good point. Its much better now with tab and go but yeah sometimes it can be annoying if credit card declined or not reading.

Oh really whenever i've been to melbourne i've never tipped, they must hate me lol

Which part of Australia you from? You don't have to answer if don't want to.
Is tipping common in your state?
[doublepost=1555550248][/doublepost]I think tipping mentioned somewhere here...

My general rule for shopping non-online is to pay with cash if the amount due is less than $20. About every 6-8 weeks I withdarw $200-300 in cash. I keep around $50 in my wallet. I am old enough to still like cash and still write some checks and would be pissed if these choices disappeared before I do.

I generally carry about $40 in cash "just in case" along with my credit card. A couple of years ago the cash came in handy when all forms of electronic payment at a grocery store were "down" and many people were walking out because they probably didn't have enough cash to cover their intended purchases.

I use cash at the barbershop (he's an independent barber and doesn't accept credit or debit cards).

Some expenses at my church require cash (although I do contribute electronically each month instead of putting cash into "the basket" weekly).

Finally, my landlord only accepts checks for my monthly rent.

Sydney, and no tipping is non existent here. I go to Melbourne once a year for the Formula 1 GP and was unaware i was meant to be tipping, opps lol.

The GP is 10 minutes walk from my place but never been there . I stay away during that period, it gets too noisy and crowded. Not my cup of tea.

Cash is too easy to lose or have stolen. And once it’s gone, there is nothing anyone can do. Credit cards can be froze, cancelled, or changed within minutes, plus they offer other protections such as warranties and credit reports.

Adult pr0n shop sounded bad :p

Well, and I don't even want to know how many times I have gone into a certain bakery for "a cup of coffee" --a lie akin to "the check is in the mail"-- but have emerged with a slice of heavenly plum cake. Similarly, a friend and I used to refer to our forays to a farm stand for peach pies in the summer as "making a tomato run". I like using cash not only for the anonymity but for the prospect of amnesia. :)

No more risk with a debit card than a credit card. You are covered by the bank against fraud.
One of the reasons I use cash over my cards is you are reducing the fraud risk. The more you use your card the more opportunities for scammers.

I’ve never had any cash lost or stolen in my lifetime. I have no need for credit reports.
Warranties are from the supplier of goods regardless of how you pay.
