I carry $20-40 routinely in a wallet, but I buy everything with my credit card. We earn A LOT of frequent flyer miles. Infrequently that cash is spent. When we recently traveled internationally we carried a $100 cash. I remember a time when we used to buy hundreds of name the currency for a particular country, but no more.

I use cash only at a certain small local business that I'm a patron of. They take plastic but prefer cash and I get a 10% discount for paying with it. So I carry a little cash to cover that small expense and it's a rewards credit card for everything else.

In case of power loss, net connection or bad reading its always handy to carry cash. Even just for emergencies.

Plus 1.
I always carry Ca$h at least $300.00 to $600.00 unless I'm going on a Trip then More.
I also carry5 cards with around $500,000.00 credit line!! :D

What about tipping , soda machines. Parking...

I tip when I pay using a debit card. Pretty much all restaurants offer debit payments now and you have the option to tip. Parking machines have the option to pay via debit or credit. I don't use vending machines, so I don't know about that.

My wallet looks like this....

[doublepost=1555598630][/doublepost]Fat,ugly and full of junk. Really like how organized Yaxomoxay is

[doublepost=1555598756][/doublepost]I guess its time to minimize cash on hand and flow with the flow.

I'm in the USA. I put every single purchase/bill/expense I can on my credit cards (balance paid each month). When I go to an ATM I get out $80 and it lasts me weeks (possibly months). The quickest way for me to not go back to a business is a 'cash only' sign. I'd love to be able to pay with Apple Pay everywhere.

That's about my amount also when going overseas. More than that and I'd get nervous about carrying that much.

I use Samsung Pay for everything, it's compatible with all card readers. Which also means I like to carry an iPhone and Samsung phone together, so kind of take away the convenience.

So, only criminals use cash?
Not quite, but to open a bank account you must present several forms of ID to prove you are who you say you are. And if you can't even after you exhaust all allowed forms, then it becomes rather questionable as to why you can't.

Nope I have the same $20 in my wallet from many years ago. I forget its there, I am sure one day I may need it. I use Apple Pay when available, and my SkyMiles physical card when it isn't available. I am not throwing away precious miles by using cash/debit cards. Even parking meters take cards here, I see no reason to ever touch that $20.

So people who use cash don’t have bank accounts? I have several accounts thanks but still use cash when making a purchase in person.

Where did you pull that from? I'm clarifying for the other member what the other individual said.

Interesting. Was there a day you wished you had cash with you because of technical problems using cards,?

never really, cant remember.. sometimes there has been a short time problem with some bank (with a connection), but then you can use another card (e.g. a credit card instead of debit) or get a cash from any atm (atm’s are literally on everywhere). and if there is a problem with a card, banks inform about it very fast. it usually is on headlines on news - if you read any online magazines, you see the possible problem. and before you enter to a grocery store there is usually a message on the door ” x card doesnt... ”. so, basicly you already know if there is a problem before it happens to you..

nowadays it might be difficult to draw money from a bank - they might not have any. some banks are open only on certain time a day for few hours to pay bills/draw money, and if you are going to draw out larger amount of money (e.g. only few thousends), you need to inform the bank few days before you are going to draw that money from the bank.

more or less you see only elderly people, small kids or immigrants to use cash.

Cashless only when shopping on the internet
Many stores in NYC still don’t accept Apple Pay as well as most restaurants. And then there are restaurants that are ‘ cash only

Gas stations also offer a better price for Cash

While a Cashless is coming there’s still a need for cash

Depends where you live, NYC still has a pretty high "cash culture" where as here in Phoenix its card card card card, and then you'll hit one guy using cash. No cash only stores I can think of either ever since Square was a thing.

Don't get me wrong, cash still has its place, I just choose not to use it. I will happily accept cash however as a gift, because, money. And come on, what sane person would turn down money?

I carry a small amount of cash, unless I know I'm going to need more (but usually a check will suffice). I'm not sure if my barber would take a card; I always use cash there. Some places around here require at least a $5 purchase to use a card.

It's been really surprising to me how Square has meant that so many small mom+pop places can take Apple Pay. Yet behemoths like Target are only now getting around to taking it.

I have to carry cash because many bakeries and small restaurants in Germany don't take credit or even giro cards.

(Giro cards are some proprietary German format that directly charges to your bank account)

Yep. I don't need credit card companies knowing my every move, and I don't need to saddle small businesses with the several percentage points they lose on every transaction.

As we are increasingly becoming a cashless society with credit cards and digital transactions becoming the primary forms of money transfer, i am surprised and don't understand to see many people totally rely on their cards and phones to pay and never carry even a dollar ?!?!?

I still carry cash between $200-$500 depending what i am doing and also use credit card from time to time so i think i use both equally but never rely 100% on digital transactions.

Can't wait to hear from others. Is USA or wherever you are is becoming like Australia?

When the RFID chips become mandatory then will the United States become a cashless society.

Most of the folks who work for themselves prefer cash.

When we bring in a local home fix it type, be it plumber, carpenter, or handyman, we let them know ahead of the job that we pay cash.

Not spoken, but when we call next time... they come quick. LOL

We call those debit cards.

While being the same in concept, giro cards work differently.

I've never seen a place outside of Germany that could take giro, although there are giro cards with additional support for Maestro which works in most of Europe.

There are many weird things about banking in Germany. There is something called "Lastschrift" where a company can charge money directly from your bank account if they just know your IBAN.
