It doesn’t look elegant. It emphasises the owner’s status as an absolute prat. And it tells me all I need to know about their taste.

If I had $108,000 spare, I’d get the best Grados for £1,795, made from mahogany, get another spare one, a nice pre-amplifier for each, and put the remaining $100,000 in the bank.
You definitely aren't the target market .... which is more likely to have $108,000 walk around money and a cool couple of billion in their offshore account that daddy put there for "safe keeping"

Oh, AND they will be an absolute prat. 🤣

I am waiting for $30 gold skin from 3rd party. One can’t tell it’s $108,000 or $600 Airpods Max with gold skin. Improvise☺️

I just did a Google search for how I would get gold plated headphones for a lot less and found this company in London:

They can plate anything. Gold up to 10 µm thickness. With 3µm thickness it's guaranteed for three years.

Well, the guy you worked for probably earned his money. There's a big difference between people who work hard for their fortunes and people who have fortunes thrown in their laps. I would bet the people likely to buy those headphones are part of the latter group.

It's the same reason why most people who win the lottery have nothing to show for it in five years.
A commenter earlier tackily attributed the existence of products like these to the nouveau riche (individuals with first-generation wealth), but that's a grossly incorrect characterization of the great many self-made business owners I've met. It's really a sad take on what it means to experience poverty and speaks volumes of said commenter's character. If anything, as duly noted by yourself, it's those who have the privilege of wealth without intelligence who are likely the target customers.

Russian company Caviar, known for making luxury variants of popular tech gadgets, today announced that it will be releasing custom AirPods Max plated with "pure gold" for the high price of $108,000 at some point in 2021.

The custom AirPods Max will be available in white and black, with each color offered "in a single piece worldwide," suggesting that the headphones may be quite exclusive. In the words of Caviar, the pure gold design apparently "looks elegant, emphasizing the status of the owners and their impeccable taste," for people who "want to always be on top."

Caviar recently introduced a custom iPhone 12 Pro that supposedly includes a small piece of an original Apple I computer's circuit board, but this claim has been disputed.

Long past time to crowdfund some guillotines.
