I wonder how receptive these phone screens would be to receiving an additional ceramic coating like the ceramic coatings you can buy for car paint.

That’s not what my complaint is. Nice attempt at an apples and oranges comparison, though. LOL.
Yes it was your complaint. You want your iphone to be magically has no wear and tear because it has a Pro name on it. Put it in a glass case, and you get what you want. Easy. 😉

Want a more practical approach? Simply install a screen protector.

You are equating Pro as being magically have no wear and tear. My point was pro has nothing to do with that quality you wanted. So either use a screen protector or put your iphone in a glass case. Your problem is solved. You're welcome. 😁

From post #10:

“My 12 Pro that I used for 2 years under the same conditions, had no such scratches. I do not use screen protectors, but do use Apple Leather cases.

It really is pathetic that a “PRO” device is so delicate. I’m also with you on the fact that the trade-off for more shatter resistance was a bad call IMO.”

You said: “You want your iphone to be magically has no wear and tear because it has a Pro name on it.”

Nowhere have I said my expectations are that of a “Pro as being magically have no wear and tear.”

Re-read the line from my post above (post #10)that says: “It really is pathetic that a “PRO” device is so delicate.”

That is what my complaint was.

I rest my case. You do expect a Pro device to be cosmetically wear and tear proof. Pro monicker has nothing to do with that.

The Pro iphone is not that delicate either (although in the end it is still a glass sandwich phone, of course). The stainless steel frame is extremely durable, and the gorilla victus/ceramic shield is the best glass in the industry for smartphone use.

Either put on a screen protector or put your iphone in a glass case if you want a cosmetically pristine iphone. Again, you're welcome. 😉

The screen material is the same from the 12s to 14s so let’s get that fact out there. There is no difference in scratch resistance.

Also ceramic shield actually is more scratch resistant than previous iPhones. So saying it is easier to scratch does not stand up to testing by several reviewers.

Adding Promotion made the screen much more vulnerable to a force impact on the centre. This was even quantified from the 12 to 13 but nobody here ever mentioned this, so the 12s are more shatter resistant than the 13/14 series with Promotion. I would assume the non-promotion models are more shatter resistant but Apple may just cheap out and have the thinner screen for all - but nobody checked as far as I know.

Bottom line, todays iPhone have a more scratch resistant screen than previous generations - just slightly - but more scratch resistant. They also can take heat better than previous generations and are much more shatter resistant.

You guys are obviously going caseless and without A screen protector. Why???? Yes, I know AppleCare plus is available but you nearly have to break your phone to where it’s useless before they replace it.
This is not true at all, with AC+ your screen will be replaced for scratches, regardless, walk into any BestBuy/Apple store and your out of there in an Hr with a new screen. I don't use any protection at all, recently dropped my 14PM on raised cement, 2 scratches on the bottom of glass, I am ok with that as I will get a new screen when it becomes intolerable.

After one year my iPhone 13 Pro is more scratched than my iPhone X of four years. And I use my phone *less* than I used to.

I hate that Apple has sacrificed the scratch resistance of the phone for shatter resistance. I haven't dropped my phone on a hard surface in 10 years. Scratches, however, are inevitable it seems.
They should have made the glass Apple TV remote shatter proof. i dropped it twice on my tile floor and it now looks destruction derby… the whole face is shattered.

I believe Apple's marketing for ceramic shield is that it is more shatter resistant.

However, the more shatter resistant you make a phone, the easier it becomes to scratch. So it's either or. Thats how glass works.

And since it's more expensive to replace a cracked screen than a scratched one (you don't replace that at all), I believe Ceramic Shield is more for the benefit of the consumers.

I never drop my phone but also noticed that phones have started to become easier to scratch over the years. So I just bought a screen protector just for the inevitable scratches. Its literally almost indistinguishable from not using a screen protector and once the scratches are too much/oleophobic coating is gone, ill just install another one for $5

I have had the exact opposite experience as it seems most have in this thread. Every since Apple launched Ceramic Shield, I have gone without a screen protector, and on my 12PM and 13PM, the screens look brand new. Let's hope it says that way with my 14 Pro Max!

I am very careful with my iPhones, but I think Ceramic Shield is a game changer.

If you’re prone to dropping your phone, then put it in a case to to protect the corners of the screen.
Of course that would be the sensible thing to do.

I’m just saying that I never had a chipping away at the edges problem with prior iPhone screens on minor drops. But this Ceramic Shield soft glass allows for breaking away to save a full on spider web crack.

🤷‍♂️

I agree. Ceramic Shield blows. It's less prone to break on a fall, but it's more prone to scratch.

I never scratched or broke any iPhone or iPod Touch in 13 years of use. But my iPhone 12 has two small scratches and only God knows how they happened.

If someone has ceramic shield, I recommend adding another layer of tempered glass on top (sold on Amazon), and I've never recommended this before. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Ceramic Shield scratches really easy, my iPhone 12Pro had a new screen 4 times in the two years I owned it due to scratches and my reluctance to use a protector.
The 14Pro, I’m on my 3rd screen protector in less than a month, so I’m not sure which is the better option, AC+ screen changes or screen protector changes. It will scratch really easy and the 12/13/14 all seem to share the impact resistance & scratch resistance properties.

I just made a similar thread the other day about this very issue. After ~3 weeks of use on my 14 Pro, I already have 2 scratches on my screen that seemingly came out of nowhere.

My 12 Pro that I used for 2 years under the same conditions, had no such scratches. I do not use screen protectors, but do use Apple Leather cases.

It really is pathetic that a “PRO” device is so delicate. I’m also with you on the fact that the trade-off for more shatter resistance was a bad call IMO.

Same thing with my 12 Pro. 14 Pro has 2 scratches now in the matter of a few weeks.

Nope. I am very careful with the way I handle my phones. 12 Pro after 2 years was almost in mint condition. No screen protector.

12 and up all have Ceramic Shield, I don’t know why your 14 Pro would get more scratches compared to your 12 Pro, weird

You expect wrong. Spend $10 to protect your $1k plus device. It’s not hard.

Oh, so the “Pro” device needs an accessory to perform. Got it 👍
Yeah this is really simple. It’s glass. Which breaks and scratches. That’s in the product description. If you don’t want scratches get a sapphire screen or protector. That won’t scratch, but fun fact it can shatter.

No, no, no. You're clearly wrong. This is a pro device. It should withstand atmospheric reentry while taped to the outside of a SpaceX Dragon capsule. In fact, it should be able to be the ceramic heatshield for the capsules and suffer no damage. Anything less is engineering negligence on Apple's part (probably caused by employees working from home).

The most scratch-prone iPhone in my experience was the 11. The screen was a mess after one year, I basically bought the 12 for that reason alone.

12 was by far the most scratch resistant phone I have ever had, same my girlfriend’s 12 Mini. But these ones were less on the road due to pandemic.

13 good, but not perfect (microscratches), let’s see this 14 PM.

But in the end I don’t care much as getting a new iPhone every year with fresh screen & oleophobic coating costs me little more than a coffee a day (and here in Italy coffee is cheap).
