I actually bought an M8 a few months ago, and it's been a phenomenal display for work purposes alongside my 16" M1P MBP.

The S9 would interest me, but seeing as how the M8 will be updated with portrait orientation options, the possibility of buying another down the line is there. Or just getting the "old" M8 for cheap, and then have two of those beastly displays for work.

I'll certainly be the envy of the office, what with the standard 24" display everyone else uses.

Not going to lie, this looks impressive. I'm really curious about the pricing model of it overall. However, one thing just jabs me the wrong way; will the on-screen menu show ads like the Samsung TVs?? If it does, this is worthless. Since Samsung started injecting ads into their $2k+ TVs it seems like this would be the perfect opportunity to do the same with monitors.
The one good thing about TV interfaces is that they can safely be bypassed on most TVs, at least after initial configuration. You only see the ads if you're actively using their OS. But if you're just displaying stuff from one of the inputs, then you never see the OS. One can hope it's the same way with the Samsung S9. (No ads at all would be better though of course.)

Hrmmm for that just go with the Studio....

Now $800 less and that is another matter.
That's one reason I didn't buy either the Apple Studio Display or the LG UltraFine 5K.

Nice aesthetic to match say a Mac Studio. Of course, we always say, but it doesn’t have the Apple logo on it. But maybe that’s a good thing based on the disastrous launch of the Studio Display. Apple dropped the ball on that one and it makes wonder if they can be trusted to make relatively affordable peripherals without cutting corners.

Of course they can. They're just gouging. The 27" 5K iMac started at $1799. The Studio Display starts at $1599. Both have 5K retina panels. Both have a webcam and speakers. In addition, the iMac included...a Mac, a keyboard, and a mouse!

We are left with three options:

1. Mac components are dirt cheap, which means Macs are grossly overpriced.
2. Display components are dirt cheap, which means the Studio Display is grossly overpriced.
3. Both Mac and display components are dirt cheap and we're being ripped off on everything.

Take your pick!

Probably because they were hard to come by not too long ago, that and Apple purposely removing it from the store like they do anything that competes with their products. The Apple Store still shows only the LG Ultra Fine 4k display at this time. I think they have ceased production if going by LG web page versus availability. Still some limited availability as seen online.
I picked up one of the LG Ultra Fine 4K displays from Amazon a few weeks ago and can't be more happier. the extra thunderbolt port and the three USB-C ports are sooo convenient. Speakers are ok, better than most (but not in comparison to the Studio Display). Very hard to tell the difference in color and quality picture when attached to my M1 MacBook Pro. (just slightly, but not a big deal).

Would be interested to see the 5K screen matted without being glossy. I think it is a first in 5k to my knowledge. Will also keep a watch on the Samsung. I was one that could not justify the cost of a Studio Display. Went to a retail store that had it many many times and looked and used to convenience me that the experience and cost was worth the dent in my wallet. Could not do it.

Matte coating?!? Ugh why would you make a pro-monitor with matte coating, it completely ruins the image. Can’t find a single glossy display anymore except Apple’s overpriced displays.

This isn't the first non LG/Apple 5K monitor. About 5? years ago Dell, Iiyama, and some small American company all sold repackaged versions of the LG 5K panel. Prices were never below about $900 even back then. Sadly all were discontinued after a year or two.

That is what is a litle 'odd' here. Samsung must have some other clients for this panel lined up. Either that or it will be another really short trip where this 5K panel falls off a cliff in 1-2 years.

Apple went far longer than the others in part because they just herded millions of iMac users into buying the panel. If wanted a mid range performance , desktop Mac with a good GPU ... iMac 27" 5K was your only choice. Because Apple sold the volume the panel stuck around at a reasonable enough price for Apple's system price point.

Dell and the other folks tried to charge an 'arm and a leg' when their solution came out and the volume uptick was relatively low. They then tried to cut prices which only marginally helped. ( Windows software hiccups at the time didn't help. ). Most of these folks tried to take advantage of temporary pricing spike and Apple priced it long term all along (and sold millions of panels ).

If this panel shows up in some other CES 2023 product announcements ( or 'sneak previews') that would make more sense. But Samsung supplying themselves only over the long term probably runs into issues. ( too high a price. or eventual lack of interest. )

P.S. I initially though this was going to undercut the $1,599 studio display, but starting to look like it may not. The built in calibration and some other features will get a high mark up. Samsung just takes higher profits for a couple of years and fades.

Wow, someone else finally sells a 5K display, maybe this will finally give Apple some pricing competition?

ViewFinity S9 specs
  • 27-inch 5K panel (5120 x 2880)
  • 99% DCI-P3
  • Built-in color calibration engine
  • Average Delta E ≦ 21 color accuracy
  • USB-C and Thunderbolt 4 connectivity
  • Matte display finish
  • Built-in 4K webcam
  • Samsung Smart Hub
If they don’t provide a glossy coating it ain’t a true contender

Glossy is why I would buy an apple display (assuming I’m crazy enough for that)

Based on this comparative pic from dpreview (https://www.dpreview.com/news/42685...onitor-is-coming-after-apple-s-studio-display), the Samsung has narrower, more modern-looking side and top bezels (like on the XDR), at the expense of a wider bottom bezel (where, IMO, it doesn't matter).

I'd prefer narrow side bezels because I run three monitors and like their display areas to be as close as possible. Right now I overlap their bezels to achieve that (the side bezels on my 27" iMac are >1" wide), but it's a bit of a kluge. Plus they just look nicer.

Guess we'll need to wait for CES this month to find out Samsung's pricing. The Samsung has a height/tilt-adjustable stand and a matte screen, which would set you back $2,300 on the ASD; plus the Samsung's stand has the ability to do portrait mode, which is unavailable with the ASD's stands--you'd need to go with VESA for that.

There’s no mention in any of the coverage I’ve seen of VESA, and most Samsung displays like this (such as the M8) don’t have VESA options. I would expect this to be the same. Sadly, that’s a dealbreaker for me.
From the article „The M8 now pivots up to 90 degrees for a portrait orientation, and it supports VESA standards for those who prefer different mounting solutions.“

Agreed. Though since I use dedicated studio monitors I prefer zero speakers in a display and less cost/complexity. That is what it so un-pro about the Studio Display: Advanced as the speakers may be, anyone who works in pro audio doesn't need the built-in speakers. And anyone using more than one display is paying for the speaker system twice, not to mention the environmental waste from a company who loves to send out green virtue signals.

You see Video Editors or Compositors aren't the only people who will use it. For me a 3D artist & Vis Dev/Concept artist I have no issue with the inbuilt speakers, nor it has to be as accurate as something like Sony Trimaster. It just needs to show some accurate color to a certain degree & many of us will be fine with it.

Yeah, dpreviews mentioned it would have made more sense for the ASD's target audience if they'd put the BOM into a 10-bit panel (like on the XDR) instead of the fancy speakers and camera—or just kept the panel as-is but left the bells and whistles out, enabling them to keep their profit margins while selling for a lower price.

Tell me about it. When I saw this article, my eyes opened and I hastily started reading it with great interest.. up to the point when I saw the "matte coating" part. What a freaking let-down.

Apple pretty much remains the only option to avoid the fuzzy text and looking at monitor image that appears like it has sparkly dust all over it.

I know there is at least one glossy alternative for 4k displays currently available, but for 5k.. nope. You go Apple or you go home. This Samsung is a hard pass.

For Ultrawides, 163 PPI is currently the highest you can get which is the equivalent of a 27" 4K monitor. Those monitors are:
- LG 34WK95-U
- LG 34BK95-U
- MSI PS341WU

All three are 34" 5120x2160 flat ultrawides. The sharpest curved monitor is going be a 40" 5120x2160 monitor and there are a couple of options out there with the LG 40WP95C-W 40 being the most popular.

Thanks Jared! It's a curved one I'm looking for, now I know more! 👍

5K with a stand and camera? Studio display price slash incoming.

Yes, it will be just like all those times Apple slashed the price on the MacBook Air when Lenovo released a new Thinkpad.

S9 27/5k - will be ~ $200 less than Apple Studio monitor. I just got a Studio monitor and I love it

Thats about my guess as well. I will be very surprised if it is sub-$1200.

That 57" ultra wide looks interesting.

It does, for gaming. It is not a great DPI for Macintosh which shoots for about 110 ppi. So, you don't have a native scaling mode, and the DPI is still low enough that software scaling will look "blurry"

this is fantastic news and hope others will follow. Apple abused their 5k position for way too long. If Samsung prices this well, it will be a hit with mac users.

Apple just got back into the 5k screen market. It wasn't like LG or Dell were selling 5k displays at $699 retail in the meantime.

The Apple's version is insanely overpriced. Now, let's get 32" 6-7k version also and we all benefit.

7k at 32" would be a bit of a waste. An 8k 43", on the other hand...
