How do they still not understand, that (only) matte is not an option anymore, especially in Apple world.
I wish they went with the design they used on the U3223QE which is so simple and minimal. If you can look past the design though, this should be an excellent monitor for productivity with all the features it has (that flip down forward facing USB hub looks very handy). Looking forward to seeing the price and how it could affect a future Pro XDR update from Apple.![]()

Design is bad but the fact that we are getting above 200ppi is good for us all. Lets hope the trend continues so it pushes Apple to do better

My guess is that the NDA for the R&D spent on 5K display has expired. So Samsung can now offer it to he public.
We don’t know for sure yet if this is actually a Samsung panel. There is a good chance it is, but Samsung isn’t obliged to only ever use Samsung panels. The various Samsung divisions are relatively independent from each other. In fact, Samsung’s TV arm was growing increasingly frustrated with Samsung’s display panel manufacturing arm and actually began negotiations to buy LG OLED panels. However, Samsung’s display panel manufacturing arm now makes OLEDs for TVs.LG made Apple's 5K panels through the whole panel product lifetime. the 5K panels that other used several years ago were LG made also.
Apple doesn't 'own' 5K. They may have asked Samsung to build an alternative to the updated LG panel they are now using. [ LG may not be all that eager to keep making them. ]. There may have been an agreement not to sales pitch the panel to other system vendors for a while ( Apple may had something like a 'first refusal' right. ). Unless Apple is paying for the R&D, they don't really get to own the details on the product. NDA that Apple is looking for a product.
If Samsung paid for the R&D themselves they can choose not to talk about it. ( everything in their R&D labs isn't on full, complete public disclosure). However, that is more a choice than a contractual bond. If Apple is the only other folks interested in one then not much upside in talking to anyone else in the short term.
Come on... why they had to mess up this design so bad? This doesn't make sense for me at all as Dell is definitely able to make quite good looking monitors. They had their chance to create the perfect XDR competitor, but, with this design, I doubt this gonna happen.![]()

Sorry guys, forget the Samsung! Dell has announced the 6K monitor!

I guess you weren’t following the rumours. The rumours from last summer had suggested new 5K monitors were in the pipeline for 2023, and occasional rumours were suggesting even a possible 6K in the pipeline. So I just bought the Apple Studio Display and now Dell and Samsung decide to announce these display? What in the hell.
Not saying that I'm unhappy with the Apple Studio Display, but it is not a very flexible display as it is clearly designed to be used with Apple products.
Dell and Samsung will work better with non-Apple products.

If only I knew a contact address at DELL where I could write exactly this opinion, I would do it immediately. I love DELL monitors. They make really good quality at mostly fair prices, so I would like a monitor like you wrote, but please with 120Hz on topGot excited when I saw this headline until I saw the webcam. Yikes! I don't even want a webcam on my monitor at all. If I do I can buy one and clip it on. I want tiny bezels, no logo, no webcam, no speakers, a good stand that can be swapped for VESA, and a glossy display. Why can't anyone deliver any of that in a 5k display that's not obnoxiously overpriced like Apple. Stop putting matte finishes on high end monitors, it looks HORRIBLE.

Ultimately, I agree, a high PPI is even more important than the design, so I am definitely grateful that this monitor will exist.
I couldn't phrase it better than you. Exactly !Yep, if the design wasn't this hideous then I'm sure Dell would give Apple some head scratchers but with this design I'm sure they are laughing at Apple right now.
Who comes up with crap like this? It feels that Apple has some secret pact with other manufacturers that they won't create anything beautiful. I mean - who in their right mind would create this monstrosity?
Damn, so close and yet so far :-(

In computers, Apple world has so low market share that nobody cares about it.How do they still not understand, that (only) matte is not an option anymore, especially in Apple world.
Yeah, but only if you buy up front. Some of us change and the connection for the stand should be a VESA mount.

Doesn't mean they cannot loop back later in the year and put another suffix on it and drop the camera (e.g., QZ and QE ) . Feature compare between the two 4K models.
The panel costs are probably higher so I wouldn't expect the QZ price point for this. The QZ costs more than the QE which makes it easier to hold onto the margins to make this worthwhile. As the base price creeps higher it makes less and less sense to sell two, largely fratricidal , monitors with exactly the same panel in them.
( if there is a supply glut of panels and are being 'dump' by the supplier than would even off the trade-offs. )
Doubtful Apple views this as serious competition to the XDR. There are rumors of an Apple monitor that would sit in the middle between Studio Display and XDR ( 27" 5K mini-LED) . This Dell monitor likely would be more problematical for that.
The list price for the QZ is $1,599. The better (higher pixel density and better backlight) panel probably costs more, but it would be surprising to see Dell go past $2,599. The rest of the monitor is basically the same. And if price lands close to $2,099 it is will cause problems for the Studio Display also far more than for the XDR.
If Apple pushed out some $3K 5K screen then might get folks willing to trade mini-LED backlight for more pixels (6K vs 5K) for several hundred dollars less.
Highly doubtful that this 'makes' Apple roll out an XDR replacement earlier than they had planned. ( which is likely not any time soon given track record of > 5 years squatting on 30" display and initial Thunderbolt models ).
From a technical point of view, I'm thinking probably yes, since it's just a 4% difference in the number of pixels. This Dell 6K monitor has 6144x3456 pixels.
Can we use it (in native resolution) with recent M1/M2 Macs that only support up to 6016x3384 pixels?
