I think it's funny how you guys are whining about overpaying for a cable but yet you don't whine about paying $700 for a cell phone. Do you think they don't make an enormous profit margin on the cell phone too?

Keep in mind Apple has around $100 BILLION dollars in CASH. The money came from "overcharging" us all for all of their products.

They have the right to charge whatever they want. If you don't like it, then don't purchase their products. They have changed their data connection ONE TIME since the first iPhone came out. Do you realize how many times Samsung has changed theirs since then?

So bottom line -- quit whining. If you don't like it, don't buy an iPhone 5 or just wait and buy the Chinese knock offs that will be available in 2 weeks.

There are no alternatives of equal quality and feature set for the cell phone. There will be alternatives for the cables. You pick your battles.

What I want is the MicroUSB to Lightning adapter. Sadly it only seems to be available in other countries, not the US.

I have a pile of MicroUSB cables, and when I visit friends nearly everyone has one laying around. Attaching that little adapter to my keychain would mean being able to charge nearly anywhere I'm at.

I love my iPhone as much as anybody but do you realize how moronic your statement was?

No, you probably don't know......

There was absolutely nothing moronic about it. Your response on the otherhand implies you need to work on your reading comprehension.

How would you attach it?

You completely missed the point. You can believe what you want about the iPhone. Just **** and stop whining about the cost of the cables. You knew going in that was part of purchasing a 5.

I recognize an opportunity to save money. Seems you think it's just something to throw around. You also might want to re-read my posts. At no point have I whined.

I don't like to throw money around but when I make a decision, i.e. purchase an IP5, I don't whine about the extra money I have to spend on cables. I knew going in that was part of the deal. If I had a huge problem with it I would have just kept my IP4s.

I'm a big boy and accept the decisions that I've made. Maybe you should give that a try too.

Glad you think you're bright. I don't like to throw money around but when I make a decision, i.e. purchase an IP5, I don't whine about the extra money I have to spend on cables. I knew going in that was part of the deal. If I had a huge problem with it I would have just kept my IP4s.

I don't need to "think" I'm bright (there are tests for such things). But you continue the personal jabs all you like, they don't change the facts. The first fact, I never whined about the price of the cable. Secondly, I knew the price of the cables going in as well. Third, I also knew (or concluded from past experience) that quality options from third parties would eventually hit the market.

I've decided that for my personal needs, it was worth paying $20 for one cable and waiting for the cheaper options to buy more. But for some reason you have a problem with that. What all my "brightness" doesn't tell me is why you have an issue with that and why you've chosen to come in here and personally attack me for this choice? Why have you decided that I'm "not very bright" for seeing an opportunity to save money and deciding to take advantage of that. What is so wrong with your life that you need to come in here and attack me for what anybody else would notice as a wise decision? Perhaps you're just bored? Either way, you're mistaken.

I'm in the same boat here as Geckotek. I'll probably buy one Apple branded Lightning cable, but I'm waiting for the knock offs to come on to market before I buy any more. I have always bought my 30 pin cables from Monoprice. I "need" 7 of them:

2 for my cars
1 for my Macbook Pro
1 for my Mac Pro
1 for my Alarm Clock
1 for my desk at work
1 for my charger in the kitchen

Right now I haul the one it came with everywhere. I am going to leave that connected to my Alarm clock (most important place to have one) and then use the Apple one I buy as I move around. Unfortunately one of my cars, the USB port is behind the head unit so I'll have to tear apart the dash and put the new cable there (although trying to convince my wife I need to "upgrade" since I have to tear apart the dash anyway).

So if I were to buy Apple cables, that comes to $114 + $7 (tax) so almost $121 for the cables. I guess I am just so used to using the $3 30pin cables from Mono Price, that spending over $100 on cables seems ridiculous (when I should be able to spend $20). Part of me wishes I had waited to buy the iPhone 5 until cheap knockoff cables were readily available (and tested!).

So the iPhone is the only cell phone on the market?

Do you know what being obtuse means?

After Andy has told Warden Norton about the possibility that the murderer of his wife and her lover may be identifiable and that records may exist to assist in finding his location, Warden Norton dismisses the idea. The scene takes place in the Warden's office.

__WARDEN NORTON
"...Let's say for a moment Blatch does exist. You think he'd just fall to his knees and cry, 'Yes, I did it! I confess! By all means, please add a life term to my sentence!'"
__ANDY DUFRESNE
"It wouldn't matter. With Tommy's testimony, I can get a new trial."
__WARDEN NORTON
"That's assuming Blatch is even still there. Chances are excellent he'd be released by now. Excellent.
__ANDY DUFRESNE
"They'd have his last known address. Names of relatives...[The Warden shakes his head]...Well it's a chance. isn't it? How can you be so OBTUSE [emphasis added]?
__WARDEN NORTON
"What? What did you call me?"
__ANDY DUFRESNE
"OBTUSE [emphasis added]! Is it deliberate? The country club will have his old time cards! W-2s with his name on them!"
__WARDEN NORTON
"Dufresne, if you want to indulge this fantasy, that's your business. Don't make it mine. This meeting's over."

_SET UP: While still in the Warden's office, Andy tries to reassure the Warden that he would never mention the double bookkeeping that he is doing. The Warden becomes enraged and sends Andy to solitary for a month. The Warden visits Andy in solitary to tell him that the man who might have been able to identify the killer of Andy's wife and her lover has been shot to death by head guard, Captain Hadley.

__WARDEN NORTON
"I'm sure by now you've heard. Terrible thing. Man that young, less than a year to go, trying to escape... Broke Captain Hadley's heart to shoot him, truly it did. We just have to put it behind us... move on."
__ANDY DUFRESNE
"I'm done. Everything stops. Get someone else to run your scams."
__WARDEN NORTON
"Nothing stops. Nothing... or you will do the hardest time there is. No more protection from the guards. I'll pull you out of that one-bunk Hilton and cast you down with the Sodomites. You'll think you've been f_____d by a train! And the library? Gone... sealed off, brick-by-brick. We'll have us a little book barbecue in the yard. They'll see the flames for miles. We'll dance around it like wild Injuns! You understand me? Catching my drift?...Or am I being OBTUSE [emphasis added]?
__WARDEN NORTON [to Captain Hadley]
"Give him another month to think about it."

Not relly because Apple has done a poor job communicating.

The Apple cable will have Digital to Analog converters built in for analog audio out. This makes them more expensive since they are an electronic device.

Theses cheep cables will be straight digital and manly good for charging.

You make a DAC sound like it's some new technology. DACs have been around for years and the one on the Lightning adapter would only include a manufacturing cost of about a $1 tops. Add that to about a nickels' worth of wire a 10 cent USB A head and for the sake of new technology a 50 cent Lightning plug we've got a cable with a manufacturing cost of under $2.

Based on a decade worth of cable buying, Apple branded cables are just as poor quality as 3rd party ones. But on top of that, Apple offers no options in cord length so why spend $20 on a disposable cable that doesnt even reach the top of my bed when I can (eventually) use that same $20 to buy half a dozen cables of various sizes?

I'm a little late to responding to this, but I agree completely! In fact I'm sitting at my desk at work staring at the Apple 30 pin cable that came with my 4S and the rubber exterior coating is cracked/snapped exposing the metal shielding inside. It was only a matter of time before one of the wires inside snapped now that they have little to no protection. This cable didn't even make it a year! I needed to replace it about a month ago, but knew I was going to order a 5 so I just didn't bother bringing another from home....

----------

I have this problem too... My bed is really tall, and when I am charging my phone, I can't really pick it up when I am using the stock cable

I'm sure you probably thought of this already, but a simple USB extender cable will fix that in the meantime (until generic longer cables are released). I do recommend wrapping some tape where the USB Extender cable meets the USB to Lightning cable. Nothing like losing connection and not realizing it only to wake up the next morning to a dead (uncharged) phone.
