Break out the tin foil. I've used cables that didn't come with the devices for decades, never a problem. The iPhone is no different. Apple loves customers like you because they can sell you a $3 cable for $20

As have I, but I had never seen a standard iPhone 30pin cable with a chip like that in it.

As I said, I don't know what the chip does at this point, and I am not willing to risk it.

I needed cables straight away, so buying knockoffs from China, waiting two weeks for shipping and have them possibly not work or be dangerous was not an option for me.

I will probably buy a third party one down the line, provided I know it works properly.

When we're talking about a $1000AUD device, saving $20 hardly seems worth the risk.

I don't like to throw money around but when I make a decision, i.e. purchase an IP5, I don't whine about the extra money I have to spend on cables. I knew going in that was part of the deal. If I had a huge problem with it I would have just kept my IP4s.

I'm a big boy and accept the decisions that I've made. Maybe you should give that a try too.

Noone is whining, we're just having a discussion.
If you want to throw your money away and don't care about price then good for you. Your money, Your decision.
Others might like to save some money and have a different opinion about aftermarket cables.
Is that ok with you?
Can I buy whatever I want with my money without someone like you attacks and starts name calling like a big baby when others have a different opinion or point of view?

I'm waiting to make this decision after a cheap Chinese cable that works is actually produced and is available. Until then if someone needs a cable now then there isn't much else they can do but buy an apple one.

After reading today's article, I don't think I want to risk buying a cheap 3rd-party cable. But... they are only like $5... we'll see.

I absolutely love the lightning connector, but hearing things like this just make me feel like it is way over-engineered for what a majority of users simply use to charge their phone.

Yes, I know that there are a ton of things that are "possible" with Lightning, but the same was said about the 30pin and in the end it really never reached its potential. And with Bluetooth, wireless and whatever new wireless technologies emerging then I really wish they went with a simple cheap charging plug. No frills, no intelligence, no authentication chip, no magic. Just a current.

MOD NOTE: Thread closed until that time. Has proven to be a rather contentious thread.
