I don't understand why the heck it's supposed to be $999 - because the Mac part is a LARGE PORTION of the iMac - I think REALISTICALLY the new display should be around $500.

But if it's 7K, maybe it will be $999.
The build is worth a lot.

Crazy number of rumors now. iPhone SE and iPad Air seem to be locks, but beyond that... Mac mini? Mac studio? 13" MacBook Pro with M2? redesigned MacBook Air with M2? And now this monitor? Seems extremely unlikely it would be all of that.
There is no MacBook Air coming tomorrow. That is a late Q4 2022 product.

Q: Why is this display 27 inches?
A: Because it uses the same edge-lit 27" 5K panel from the iMac 5K which helps keep the costs down compared to using a low-volume custom panel like the Pro Display XDR's 6K panel.

Q: How much will it cost?
A: The LG UltraFine 5K with the exact same panel has an MSRP of $1300 so it won't be cheaper than that. IMO, the spread is $1500 on the low end and $2000 on the high end with the actual MSRP somewhere in-between.

Q: Will it have a VESA option?
A: Yes. However, it will probably be sold in two versions: one with a stand and one with a VESA adapter.

Q: If I buy the stand or the VESA option, can I later switch?
A: The 24" iMac can be swapped between stand and VESA via a replacement of the back panel. I could see Apple offering the same with the Studio Display.

Let's assume the monitor does come out tomorrow. I see a lot of people hoping in ProMotion (I do too). But how can the current generation Macs support ProMotion on it? For example the Macbook Pro 14 and 16 list up to 6K at 60Hz in the video out specs. I assume ProMotion, or indeed any refresh rate above 60Hz will be supported by future Macs, starting from this Mac Studio. Correct?

I specifically wrote “appreciate” and not “see” the difference between 4k and 5k. A vast majority of people won’t care if it’s 1080p or 5k for something like using Office, they just want to get their work done on a decent monitor.
A layperson can absolutely appreciate the distinction. Whether they care enough to purchase it is a different story.

^Yep. Why Apple didn’t offer this panel as a stand-alone display before I’m not sure, but with the rumored Mac Studio there will be a desktop meant to go with it. Essentially a non-iMac version of a 27” iMac.

For 1000$ you can already buy quite a decent 5k monitor which probably would have the same panel that apple will be using.
Name one decent 5k display (actual HiDPI 5k , not ultrawide) that you can get for $1,000. Outside of the LG 5k Ultrafine, I can't find one decent 5k display, period.

Evidently iiyama has dropped the MSRP of their 5K display to $900. That being said, I believe they are the only other OEM with a 5K standalone monitor as HPE and Dell both stopped production years ago.

The iiyama display also does not offer USB or TB connectivity nor ports so that probably explains why it is cheaper.

My wishlist:
- 5k
- Built in webcam (With centerstage)/speakers/mic to enable one cable to a Mac mini
- TB4/USB-C support (Ability to connect USB-C iPads for use as a display - this definitely isn't going to happen since new pro's have thunderbolt.)
- Additional TB4 ports for connectivity
- Mini-LED
- 120hz
- < $2k
- Height adjustment...(This one's a long shot)

I think we'll probably get maybe half of this list. Pricing this is going to be an odd one for Apple since they have a $5000 32" Mini-LED 60hz "reference" monitor...they don't want to infringe on that space, but they obviously want to price higher than Samsung and others which have $1500 monitors (Granted, those are massive mini-led ultrawides...) They also have to consider it could infringe on future 27" iMac sales. My bet is on $1999, still "overpriced" based only on general specs, but still leaves room for a $2500 iMac 27" starting price.

The next Pro Display XDR is rumored to be 7K resolution and 36”. 24, 30, and 36-inch sizes would be so clean, as would 4.5K, 5.5K, and 7K resolution.

Keep it simple Apple, don’t introduce a 27” size to the mix, which fits oddly between your next-gen 24” and 36” sizes.

They could even have models with and without the XDR suffix (mini-LED option), for a $500-$1000 cost increase, until the mini-LED production capacity / cost makes it possible to make it a standard feature on all displays.
In the world of large displays, 27" seems small. And for a desktop, 24" is pretty much the equivalent of the first iMac. I went from a 30" ACD to a 27" iMac, only because the display, and my laptop which drove it, were dying. There were no options I could reasonably afford if I wanted Apple product design, which I do appreciate.

It depends, right? If you’re a video editor or a photographer you want a high quality monitor with the highest resolution. But if you‘re Joe Mac user you‘ll most likely never appreciate the difference between a 4k and 5k 27 inch monitor while checking email or watching YouTube. If Apple is selling this monitor for $1000 then its mostly for the Apple enthusiasts and visual artists that can’t afford the $6,000 offering, not for casual users or users that do less visual work.
Sure, but those users already have dozens of other options as there are good 4K 27" monitors out there (I own two of them a Dell U2720Q and LG 27UK850). Apple would own the 27" 5K market as there is only one similar option out there currently and goes for $1299 and doesn't have near the fit and finish an Apple product would.

Anyway don't think it will matter as I don't see them hitting that price point with a 5K panel and don't think they will go 4K either for a 27" or 32".

Please don’t dash my hopes tomorrow by not announcing this!!! It’s been far too long!

So we are using unverified click bait YouTubers as actual news now?

So what sort of "verification" do you require for a leak worthy of posting on a rumor site? You want Tim Cook to personally notarize that the leak is accurate and true?

I'm not single. I also don't believe in 'justifying' anything. There is a common budget we both contribute and the rest is for each of us. Neither of us is telling the other person what he/she can buy. I find it unhealthy.
Cool.

Ok.
Personally I never understood this. We have joint economics for stuff we do together or bills etc. but then each of us has the remaining for themselves and we are free to do what we want with it. I find it to be the healthiest approach but of course everyone is different.

I can't imagine a situation where I would need to ask for 'permission' or even justify a purchase I want.

Ofc I do, but we have joint economics so.

A standalone 5K Apple display for $1k sounds too good to be true. I call bull.

Especially considering how the article even straight up admits that the random youtuber they're pulling this from has no track record.

Like, why even bring our hopes up like that? For shame, MR.
