If there is no iPhone 5 WHY are all these carriers showing iPhone 5 stuff ??

This is confusing.

Dont get confused. I don't agree with the interpretation of this information either. I only see a cheaper prepaid model coming out (thought of as the 4s in this picture n90a or whatever) and the redesigned 5 (shown from case leaks). I'm not here to argue or say this is how it is. I'm thinking that Apple is changing their marketing game and the rest is just rumor/photoshop/analyst nonsense.

One thing that I'm randomly wondering...so say the cheaper version already fits the old camera (5mp) and we know we're getting an upgrade to 8mp, well is the 8mp camera module slightly larger in size which could preclude from even have been able to fit into the 4's chassis in first place?

Because Apple doesn't tell everyone how they're going to market their unreleased products? The carriers call it an iPhone 5 because five comes after four. They're probably going to have to send back all those thin Chinese-knockoff cases, too, that they used to hedge their bets (as if some warehouse in China had the inside scoop direct from Apple while Belkin and others twiddle their thumbs).

"Designed by Apple in California, Assembled in Brazil."

Now that would be a change.

One of the 27" iMacs I had was assembled in the US. I had to return it though due to yellow tint issues (go figure, the American assembled unit is defective) and opt in for the Chinese one after. And the Chinese one was better.

I don't know if anyone mentioned it or if anyone cares, but the the reason it didn't pass inspection is "stained lenses".

I've been saying this from the start. It is Apple's business model to reserve the current generation iPhone (in this case, iPhone 4) as the low end offering for the refresh. There has been ample evidence for a "4S" label and, as I have been saying, Apple would only use the "S" for the new, improved next generation phone (not for a low-end offering). The exact thing was done with 3G and 3GS. I am not sure how anyone could have thought that Apple would use something labeled "4S" as its low-end offering. It doesn't make sense. No redesigned iPhone until 2012. That's just the way it is- for better or worse.

The only shred of hope left is the cases that are arriving at the AT&T stores.

One possibility for the lack of leaks may be that they have been producing the redesigned iPhone at the new brazil foxconn plant and made sure things were on lock down over there?

Or more likely there haven't been any leaks because it's hard to take pictures of something that doesn't exist.

At THIS point, I'm gonna assume that Apple is now plugging leaks.....to increase hype.

I honestly don't care about model numbers in betas.
Bottom Line: Cheaper iPhone will be called 4S. the higher end will be the 5. Regardless of redesign or not.

Don't forget about the iPhone 5 Photostream icon that apeared last month

This could very well be true, but its not what I'm thinking is going on :)

would they really release a 'cheap' iphone 4 and not call it by another name? i'd imagine that be a bit confusing as people would have to distinguish WHICH iphone 4 they have. us apple nerds have to know all the details. your macrumors signature would have to say 1st Gen iPhone 4 16 GB or something, but i suppose they have done that with the ipods.

i'm gonna be seriously upset when they don't announce the 5 though, been holding out for months for an upgrade with an ever-slowing 3gs.

Setting my expectations very low at this point and preparing nasty emails to Tim Cook.

Why would they make Tim's first keynote be a crappy spec bump? He'll be crucified in the media. Screw the Assistant feature, Apple HAS to release new hardware to keep mindshare.

This makes too much sense now:
N90A = reduction of iPhone 4 storage to 8gb
N94 = 16 or 32gb iPhone 4S

All the carrier references, cases, and that one twit pic with an iPhone 5 label showing 64gb are exciting but it's not looking good at this point. Apple's biggest misstep in a while.

Cases are not arriving at AT&T stores. There has only been one submission here from a person "claiming" to show a shipment of AT&T-ordered cases. The person never proved he was in an AT&T store, and no one has heard a peep from the rest of the hundreds of stores around the nation of any such shipments. The guy was a reseller and bought the cases and tried passing it off as an AT&T shipment.

Bingo. No parts, no sights in betas, nothing at all. I'm not upgrading personally, but I have some friends who were looking forward to a larger screen.

In the meantime, the new Droid phone (Bionic I believe) looks pretty sweet.

the 3GS was an upgrade from the 3G though.

No, I mean the 3GS was the top end iPhone. Then when the iPhone 4 came out, it slid into the cheap tier.

Similarly, the iPhone 4 will slide into the cheap tier (but maybe with only 8GB). No need to change the name, just call it an iPhone 4 (with 8GB)

What Apple needs to do is sell these iPhone4s unlocked, without subsidy for $200 that works on 1700/1900/2100 MHz 3G frequencies.

It would be a solid kick in the pants to the low end Android phones and the only ones that could compete would be the higher end ones. Essentially, it will level the playing field for smart phones, increase Apple's profit and market share.

I'm starting to understand the confusion.

The original iPhone 4 is the N90AP iPhone 3,1 GSM
Then came along the CDMA Version N92AP 3,3

The listed phone in iTunes is the N94AP 4,1 aka the "4S"
It is referred to in the plist file as a CDMA phone .

What is not listed in the plist file is my postulation :

The "N96AP" 4,2 aka iPhone 5 GSM

From this I will say there is no "universal SIM" nor will the new iPhone run on any carrier.

The icons in iTunes are generic placeholders. iTunes is still a beta.

Not to burst your bubble, but I work at a corporate AT&T store and.....no cases are arriving. More importantly, the pics of the cases that were leaked were not in AT&T official retail packaging. More than likely, it was an authorized retailer. Which still doesn't make sense because if I'm not mistaken there usually is a lag time of a few month's before they get the new iPhone, so it wouldn't make sense that they were ordering cases at all honestly.

Even more damaging is the fact that we are actually receiving a lot of new cases for the iPhone 4. My fellow tech conspiracy theorist coworker and I thought it was because they planned to sell a massive amount of them when the 4 was price dropped, but now I'm not so sure in that line of thinking.
