The writing is pretty clearly on the wall, and people are starting to grasp at straws looking for the redesign.

I don't blame you, I've been there myself. But I'm planning on buying my iPhone 5 October, 2012.

I'm starting to understand the confusion.

The original iPhone 4 is the N90AP iPhone 3,1
Then came along the CDMA Version N92AP 3,3

The listed phone in iTunes is the N94AP 4,1 aka the "4S"
It is referred to in the plist file as a CDMA phone .

What do you mean it is referred to as the CDMA iPhone? It only uses the icon for the CDMA iPhone, it is referred to as the iPhone 4S.

So, could all the conflicting leaks/rumors be the result of Apple's attempt to root out sources of leaks?

Sure hope it's not just the iPhone 4 and 4S, or the gloom and doom here will make it too depressing ti visit MR for weeks.

Still don't think that's all there is to this story, if there is anything to the rumors about engineering/production delays related to the screen.

Setting my expectations very low at this point and preparing nasty emails to Tim Cook.

Why would they make Tim's first keynote be a crappy spec bump? He'll be crucified in the media.

Why would this be Cook's fault? He's only been at the helm for what, a month, out of the 16 or so that have passed since the 4's debut. All final decisions about whatever shows up on Tuesday were Jobs' alone. Make no mistake.

Not to burst your bubble, but I work at a corporate AT&T store and.....no cases are arriving. More importantly, the pics of the cases that were leaked were not in AT&T official retail packaging. More than likely, it was an authorized retailer. Which still doesn't make sense because if I'm not mistaken there usually is a lag time of a few month's before they get the new iPhone, so it wouldn't make sense that they were ordering cases at all honestly.

Even more damaging is the fact that we are actually receiving a lot of new cases for the iPhone 4. My fellow tech conspiracy theorist coworker and I thought it was because they planned to sell a massive amount of them when the 4 was price dropped, but now I'm not so sure in that line of thinking.

But Apple doesn't let you see what they send you. Corporate stores rarely if ever know anything before we do.

Don't burst my tiny little bubble. :(

right, but when I'm reading this article I see the "cheaper iPhone 4" is being produced and the iPhone 4s will be the new standard. when the 3g was put at the bottom, none of the specs changed (that I know of,) it simply stayed the same and the more newer, fancier model was put at the top with a new name.

No, I mean the 3GS was the top end iPhone. Then when the iPhone 4 came out, it slid into the cheap tier.

Similarly, the iPhone 4 will slide into the cheap tier (but maybe with only 8GB). No need to change the name, just call it an iPhone 4 (with 8GB)

This is what I've been saying from the start and I've been routinely voted down for it

I can understand them not redesigning the phone, but I cannot understand the name '4S' at all. But, it will sell well, like everything else with a bitten off apple on the back of it.

You own a 3GS, how is the concept of a 4S so hard to understand?

I really don't think the next iPhone is going to be called iPhone "4S". I think the only reason Apple did that with the 3GS was because it actually was the 3rd generation of iPhones. That put the iPhone names on track with the generations. The next one will be called 5 no matter if its a small bump or a while new design.

Naming it 4S just because it's a small bump would imply that the next major one will be called 5 even though it's the 6th generation...that would just be confusing.

There were problems alright, they weren't being made.

I think iOS 5 was the culprit of this delay.

Because iOS 5. iPhone 5. 5th generation.

Cook has been in charge since Jobs' leave in January. Keep in mind, the 3GS was released the last time Cook had control of the company during one of Jobs' absences.

but what about it not passing inspection? ...doesn't that mean that it won't come out or am I missing something?

If this were true, why was it not simply called iPhone 3 or iPhone 3S?

This is a total clusterf****. The iPhone 4S is supposedly the low-end iPhone and now we have this?

I still cannot to understand exactly what kind of people would actually believe that the iPhone 4S is a low end model, when Apple has used S to designate a beefed up model.

Cook was not really "in charge" - he still went to get approval from Jobs until he became CEO a month ago. Whatever happens Tuesday was ultimately Steve's decision (in my opinion).

Would you people be happy if they changed the name from the 4s to 5 ?

They are just nitpicking out of disappointment. Either way, it won't be redesigned so it makes little difference what it's called ultimately.
