So you don't like the iPod touch? I actually haven't held one, so I don't know how comfortable it is to hold, but obviously Apple doesn't think thinner is bad.

People don't hold their iPod touches up to their ears for extended periods of time. Big difference.

A forward facing camera on an iPhone? How awkward would that be? Shaky, etc. I know there are fans of video conferencing, etc. I just wonder how many there really are out of all of the users that would use that feature?

Have you seen the Dark Knight? Remember the Joker's videos he sent to the TV station? That's all I can think of every use being- people looking in to the camera with it shaking all around- funny as heck!

I still want it thought...

Ir & Rfid

RFID reader on the rear would be more convenient for same reasons as the camera is on the rear.

Even a front facing camera may well be concealed under the black bezel like the iMac/MPB. The reflective surface on the front is not very Applish. I would call this a knock off.

Any thinner and it will not be comfortable in the hand.

The back is designed with a curve to it so it is comfortable to hold, its also significantly lighter than the iphone IMO. Apple puts a TON of thought into ergonomics with their hand-helds lately.

I agree. My only complaint with the Nexus One is it is too thin...and despite the rubberized feeling of the back, I feel more likely to drop it than an iPhone 3G/3G...kind of like the original iPhone felt like a bar of soap. I was in the Apple Store the other day and picked up the iPod touch...amazed at it's thinness, but still thought the same thing..too thin for my large hands.

I don't know a lot of people who hold their iPhones to their ears other than for a quick answering of the phone. Most seem to use bluetooth headsets, or the corded earbuds mostly. A few use the speakerphone.

I dislike cases...

Anyway... for the people that think the screen is a different size, the pictures make it out to be the same 3.5" screen size. And the home button hole is the same size as the home button. Just look at the remaining bezel around the button compared to the other ones.

That's what it looks like to me anyway.

I agree with you. It looks like the extra space is actually in the bottom. Which led me to my theory about the extra space being needed for the mechanical parts of a release latch for a removable battery.

The screen is exactly the same size. Confirmed with a sticky note and a pencil.

You can get a case for the iPod touch that will make it roughly as thick as an iPhone.

The thinness of the iPod touch has both pros and cons. The most glaring negative is the difficulty in sourcing a high-quality autofocusing camera module. The iPod touch is too thin to house the iPhone's part. The thinness probably prevents the inclusion of better quality speakers. The current iPod touch has an internal speaker; the sound leaks through the dock connector port.

hmmm

i think it was ment to indicate something for some testing i doubt thatll be in the final outcom maybe this was a screen for tests and such against lighting etc. i doubt that theyll put some random reflective strip on top of the microphone

Don't TV remotes use IR? Maybe Apple's gonna update its Remote app so it can be used as a universal remote. Kinda cool.

Maybe for video chatting? Plus, a lot of people I know like taking pictures of themselves with friends. It would be nice to see how well you're focusing. Who likes pictures of themselves half cut out of pictures?

What's so bad about the design? I like it. Plus, I'm not the kind of guy who likes change for the sake of change.

Apple isn't going to radically change the iPhone design this revision, if ever. They've built a brand recognition on the "look" of the iPhone/iPod touch design, and that's why the iPad looks similar.

A good example is the iPod: It's on six (and a half) generations and it's the same basic design that was introduced nearly 9 years ago.

I do, however, hope Apple moves back to aluminum.

If they make it taller but keep the screen size the same, that's a very bad decision IMO. The screen size needs to increase because it looks so archaic compared to competitors in regards to size and resolution.

I didn't read every post in this thread, but...

It isn't a larger iPhone. It is an iPhone bezel for a phone that no longer has the chrome trim around the front edge. The edge is part of the bezel now. The phone is the same size.

this thing in the lower right corner under the display, is it one more ribbon cable/connector? that would sum up to 3 vs the previous 2.
screen seems to be thinner, and also it looks like the main board will be fixed to it (for that the new holders on the side)

As if Apple never gave preference to form over function :D
Actually, they don't.

Even though form and function are essentially tied together in the process of design and even though the idea of doing one "over" the other is more of a misnomer than anything else, Apple actually gives more attention to "function" and less attention to "form" than almost any other manufacturer of consumer goods.

It's just a popular misconception that they do the reverse because all of their stuff looks so damned good. Stuff can look good and function well at the same time. In fact that's most of the point of good design.

Yeah..I call BS, might be a part for one of the many Chineese knockoffs. Unless the display technolgy is changing (higher REZ), I don't know why they would need to make it taller. But that "reflective" slot is too small for a camera and not even the right shape.
When I looked at the images, my first though was parts for fakes, and I certainly would not expect any 4th gen iPhone to be bigger than previous generations.

If anything, the 4th Gen will be slightly smaller, with less border area.

Reflective surfaces used to be present next to some phone cameras to enable self portraits, but if Apple do implement a front facing camera, they are mouch more likely to put the users picture on the screen.

Looks like the screen is the same size but there is more space below the screen around the home button.

So a little taller and maybe a little thinner.

Are you talking about curved back of the iPad which makes it look thiner that it is but makes it very difficult to type when placed on a table?
