Actually, that rendering makes me wanna put a Hostess Cupcake in one end, and a devil's creme cake in the square.

Jeez, what is Apple coming to? (Don't answer! It's rhetorical!) ;-)

Give me AirPower and I will take an empty box. Otherwise give me a fast charger. I don't have any since my XS still was a 5W...

lowering the price of the phone is the only scenario where this is not completely outrageous

The fact it seems like you can get the 5.4" 12 for somewhere in the $549-$650 range is insane. It will most likely outperform everything else on the market, similar to the 2020 SE at ~$400.

Doing that means they could realistically increase the pro variants because people have a choice now.

Hoping Apple doesn't do this - the optics are going to look really bad. The analogy of selling a computer w/o the chord to power it is too close to home on this. Unless they offer free chargers to whomever wants one with purchase.

if you can afford a thousand dollars gadget you'll all be ok.

New customers will have to purchase a power brick that would have normally been included. Apple cares about new customers because they sometimes include slides in keynotes about an "X" percentage of customers that are "new to iPhone". So I guess they don't think those customers will care?

I think they would have loved the fast charger included in the iPhone 11 Pro, but now they will be forced to pay up.

I'm sure they have data on this, and the vast majority of iPhone buyers already have a USB power supply (or several).

Not a problem for an enthusiast like me that visits sites like this daily. For my own personal usage, I welcome the usb-c cord being standard - it's what I want for all of my devices.

But for so many others that haven't bought a new gadget in a while, meaning this will be their first usb-c cord for a device, they won't even see this coming. My sister plans to upgrade her iPhone 8 this year, and I can think of two others in my social circle who are waiting for the next iPhone. I can say with absolute certainty that they don't have a usb-c power adapter. They'd be in for quite the annoyance if I'm not around to give them a heads up.

And I'll also have to let them know that they don't have to throw away their USB-A cords and adapters. That they'll still work, just not as fast. That's going to be a lot of trash/waste for those that assume they're completely obsolete.

EDIT: Oh, just realized my thoughts are flawed. If they already have other USB-A adapters and cords, this isn't much of an inconvenience. More of an introduction to usb-c as an option.

This is horrible. I don't know how people have an abundance of chargers at home. I sell them with the phones when I sell them so when I sell my iPhone 11, I'll have 0 chargers at home.

That's great - nickel and dime you for a $1000 phone.

And before fanboys complain about this being an eco-friendly move: Why don't they first design cables and headphones that last longer than a couple of months (and don't say they last for me - search it, it is a well known problem that both the earpods as well as charging cables keep breaking)

At least this way you can buy after market versions that are known to be built better. If Apple knocks $50 off the price I'd rather that and buy my own brick/headphones, which I'd rather have than a 5w adapter and earpods. Most of us have those. Or it may just help them keep the phones price flat when it should increase based on new components.. At least that's the story Apple will most likely be pushing. I guess it comes down to if you believe that or not, but it does seem at least on phones, that Apple is trying to sharpen it's pricing if the new SE is any indication.

It is an ecological move and they do last for me.
Why don't they make another ecological move and make the airpods serviceable by allowing the batteries to be replaced by Apple and thus increasing the life of the product. Why don't they make another ecological move by launching new smartphones once every 2-3 years. Surely they are aware that for some people their products are a shiny status symbol and they will upgrade every year even if by now the smartphone design has matured and the new features are small improvements rather than big breakthroughs? And the list can go on and on.

The Stockholm syndrome sounds absurd until you read some of the posts on this website.

That will drive up profitability in a massive way. Especially after someone buys a $1k phone and then goes to Apple to get an adapter and a few extra cords.

Well over 60% of iPhone buyers are already iPhone users upgrading, so they've already got chargers and extra cords. Stop trying to act like this is some huge deal.

Those that really need a charger can buy one for a couple bucks. The majority who don't can help save the environment by not putting more needless garbage into landfills.

A small selection of my spare chargers.

Probably still got the chargers for following devices:

iPhone 3GS
iPhone 4
iPhone SE x3 (One traded in with apple)
iPhone 6
iPhone 8 x2
iPhone SE (new version)

2x iPad mini (original)
1x iPad Mini Retina
2x iPad normal

2x Apple Watch

So I make that 11 of the 5 watt chargers and 3 10 watt chargers

Most the charging for the kids phones/ipads is handled by a 5 port Anker charger. I use 2 of the Apple Chargers for my Phone and Watch charging by my bed. I really don't want anymore.

EU: use a standardised port.
Apple: ha.

I don't know how people have an abundance of chargers at home.
Those wanting faster chargers than what come with the device and also having chargers in multiple locations. I don’t think I’ve taken out the stock charger on the last 3 iPhones I’ve had.

I envision the Apple marketing folks sitting in a conference room trying to figure out how to spin another cost-cutting measure positively. I mean, it's unlikely they will pass the savings on to the customer, so I guess the Apple sticker will be next, and the paperwork will launch as a pdf during set-up. It all seems logical, but the perception is; Tim Cook is tighter than a cat's meow.😼
