This sucks. I only have a useless 5W adapter. if They are real about their avoiding waste argument, they should include a coupon code for a free charger.

Apple: You don't need anymore power bricks. You have handfuls laying around your house.

Also Apple: Here is a cable that doesn't work with any of the power bricks you have laying around your house.

I get what you’re saying, but I think the timing is good at this point. Any lightning bolt cable obviously still works. USB-C chargers are cheaper all the time, I’ve linked a compact 18w one for $9.99 below. The Apple USB-C to lightning bolt cable is $19, adds practically nothing to the package bulk, so it’s good Apple includes it.

Apple’s going to do whatever they want. May help the environment and will for sure their help their profit. Rumor getting played out.

Not a big deal for most but really sucks for the few that are buying this as their first phone. Given that the price of the phone isn't going to reflect the missing adapter, this is going to probably save Apple a ton of money.
I wouldn't say a "ton" but yeah...gotta pay for those new movies! ;);)

Good. I don't need to be contributing to more eWaste in our landfills.

You Probably have the most logical post in this thread. Apple is very environmentally conscious, and I suspect a lot of these accessories that are not used, just end in the garbage anyways. [Or], they sit in a drawer for years and then end up in the garbage at some point.

The trade-off being, if Apple can reduce the price of the phone or supplement some other advantage with the accessories being removed, then it’s a win-win for everyone from my perspective.

i havent used a power adapter or earpods for years so i wont miss it personally
Personally I stopped using the the iPhone charger since Apple went with wireless charging with iPhone X. Nowadays I just simply buy a $40 charging pad from Apple store which usually lasts me about two years which is actually a lot better than having to replace the charging cable every 4-5 months due to the cable constantly splitting right open.

I've got a 5w Apple AC Adapter at home along with a 12w Anker AC Adapter as well, both sporting USB-A ports, plus the 65w AC Adapter for my Macbook Pro, meaning I've ample ways to charge my iPhone.

Though I'll probably take this time to replace that 5w Apple AC Adapter with a 18w Anker AC adapter anyway.

portless iPhone in the year of 2021! Mark my words guys.

Everyone will be up in arms and other manufacturers will make fun of Apple only to do exactly the same thing one year later. Cable-less is the future, it's only a matter of when.

Actually, pretty sure at least one Chinese phone maker is already shipping a port-less phone, but they don't count until Apple does it :)

That's great - nickel and dime you for a $1000 phone.

And before fanboys complain about this being an eco-friendly move: Why don't they first design cables and headphones that last longer than a couple of months (and don't say they last for me - search it, it is a well known problem that both the earpods as well as charging cables keep breaking)

This is like the bent iPad thing. These things don't just fray on their own. They aren't looked after. And yes I'm going to be the guy that says it has never happened to me and it hasn't. Because I don't step on them or throw them around. I know there are plenty of complaints about it but they are people that don't look after things.

Cables is not my experience. It is however a cable that gets used a lot more than most others, so the wear might be much higher.
EarPods, like pretty much any free included earphones, are low quality. That’s been my experience with any free in the box earphone since the 80s.

New customers will have to purchase a power brick that would have normally been included. Apple cares about new customers because they sometimes include slides in keynotes about an "X" percentage of customers that are "new to iPhone". So I guess they don't think those customers will care?

I think they would have loved the fast charger included in the iPhone 11 Pro, but now they will be forced to pay up.

Pretty much anybody these days has USB chargers at home. The iPhone now goes the way of Kindles and modern day cameras, and it has been ok for these customers as well for a while.

Forced to buy will be the rare exception.

First off, nobody has said anything about the price of these phones . . . I'm sure it's a cost saving decision based off of people either not using the EarPods and power adapter, or people not needing additional EarPods and power bricks. I'm also sure it can also save some landfill space as well. I can't remember the last time I took out an iPhone cable, EarPods, or power adapter from a new iPhone purchase. Once you go wireless, it's hard to go back with both charging and listening. When I need a cable or power adapter, I can always find one somewhere in the house, but typically, I need an extra long cable, so, Anker from Amazon is normally around $10 and lasts forever! Most people don't need them, don't care. New customers would be better off buying 3rd party. All this will probably figure into a reduced price on the phone, but time will tell . . . I think people are making a mountain out of a molehill . . .

Unless those customer are new to phones, not just iPhones, they should already have a charger from their previous android etc.

I woudl hazard a total WAG that less than 10% of phone buyers even take the earphones and charger out of their box.

No one would be able to tell if Apple dropped the price of the phones by the (consumer) price of the charger. So that's a moot point.

A coupon for a free charger would just mean everyone cashing it in; some because they needed the charger, some just because that's a free $20 charger they can sell on. Not really useful.

A lot of people have old chargers they can use. An iPhone charges nicely overnight even with a slow charger (I should know, I use a wireless one).

Sales personnel will be instructed to ask customers if they need a charger, and I imagine Apple's online store will include a reminder too. If third-party sellers can't be bothered to make sure that's on them. Besides, they probably want to - it means potentially extra sales.

I'm absolutely not surprised with the knee-jerk reactions, though.

I think people underestimate the environmental impact of this. The Apple 18w USB-C charger is 2.39oz. Apple sells over 200m iPhones per year, globally. That’s over 15,000 US tons of chargers per year. That’s a lot of waste, and it doesn’t even take into account the box being twice as thick to accommodate the charger, or the ensuing difference in fuel for shipping. It’s a few bucks of savings per unit for Apple, but it’s a huge win in terms of environmental impact and greenhouse gas emissions. All for a charger that you can buy for $9.99 and use for years.

The EU has made a big push to stop manufacturers from including g chargers in the box. They want people to reuse the chargers they have. Apple has been in a fight with the EU over the Lightning port. The EU wants them to drop it in favore of “standard” USB. Of course, with USB changing so much and so fast, the question is which USB? It has been micro USB for years, but now, more likely USB C. But rumors are saying that in 2021 possibly, Apple will have no port, and the hat everything will be wireless. How that would work, I have no idea.
I doubt Apple completely redesigns the phone 1 year after doing so in 2020. A port-less redesign I'd imagine would come in 2022 or 2023 based on the iPhone design cycles.

I personally don't mind them excluding a 5V. I literally keep finding them tucked away in random places and have more than I know what to do with. I'm sure a lot of people are in the same boat, and even most switchers can probably use the adapter from their old phone. I think we all know the data from the poll they're apparently sending around will align with this too.

But if it is true, and assuming they won't give customers an option to select which USB cable they need or lower the price by the $19 value of the charger, the least they could do is include both cable types. I'd gladly take an extra USB-C to keep in my bag to use with my MBP. But if they're expecting people to just use their old chargers, it's stupid not to include the proper cable–especially with the lifespan of sad said cables.
