This is such a miserly thing to do. Not enough to stop me from buying the phone but the sort of thing which makes me resent the company I am buying from.

no it's not. they should ditch the cable as well. let us decide what we need and stop producing what we don't.
Are they going to charge you for it? Thats the question. If the price doesn’t drop then they are just ripping you off.

So the cable is going to be USB-C even though most of the extra adapters supposedly cluttering up people’s drawers are most likely the 5W USB-A adapters?
edit: never mind..... I'll still have old cables and bricks that connect to lightning. Carry on....

If the iPhones this year are all USB-C to Lightning like last years iPhone 11 Pro models, then wont everyone who didn't buy these phones last year need to buy a USB-C brick and a USB-C to Lightning cable?

BTW the 18W USB-C power adapter I am referring to is $29 on Apple's website and the USB-C to lightning cable is $35. Is that another $65 people are going to have to fork out just so they can fast charge their $1000 phone?

Whichever way you look at this decision, it's the wrong one but people on here would defend Apple if they didn't include the phone!

The insert exhibits a very thin profile with a circular area that would be for a USB-C to Lightning cable and a square area that could be for paperwork and the traditional stickers that come with Apple products...

I chuckled when I saw that there are still gonna be the all-important stickers in a package designed to remove environmental waste.

Genius! Keep raising the pricing on the phone and accessories. People will still buy it kicking/screaming asking can I have some more?

You Probably have the most logical post in this thread. Apple is very environmentally conscious, and I suspect a lot of these accessories that are not used, just end in the garbage anyways. [Or], they sit in a drawer for years and then end up in the garbage at some point.

The trade-off being, if Apple can reduce the price of the phone or supplement some other advantage with the accessories being removed, then it’s a win-win for everyone from my perspective.
The rationalizations people go to defending Apple are just amazing.

The wire will most certainly not be usb c if they aren’t including the charger.
I hope you're right 😞
Edit: wait no, lightning to usb-c would Just be a free cable in essence since I could still use my old bricks and lightning cables.
Carry on!

Over here there was a whole crowd complaining about the pile of chargers they have:

Now there’s a crowd complaining that Apple might not give them another one.

Just goes to show that it doesn’t matter what the article is about, someone will be able to find a reason to rage post about Apple being evil and wrong...

I wouldn’t put it past them. Phil will tout the environmental benefits of slimmer packaging and then say for only $20 you can get this great USB-C fast charger.
Do we know the price just won't be reduced by $25? That's all Apple really has to do, pick a price point, then reduce it by $25. If you need the extra stuff, the price goes back to the "regular" price. That's the only smart way for them to do it.

Yup, you'd think they could at least wait until something happens before the whining gets to 11. Hopefully Apple learned from their display stand PR and does this right.

I think I have sussed out their strategy. Apple have decided their customers are now so wealthy that they won’t need to recharge the phone and will just trade it in for a new one after a couple of days. Et voila! No charger needed!

well I don't care about that. go on and fight capitalism. but if you can afford a thousand dollars gadget and complain about the price of accessories, I'm glad you're not in charge of taking those kind of decisions.

Makes sense to me. I wonder how many people are on the iPhone Upgrade Program or trade in their old devices, considering when you do either of those, you can keep the charger of the iPhone? In the current scenario, you'd end up with both the old and new charger.

I know it may seem silly, but if anyone remembers a few years back, the person who bought the first iPhone 6 in Australia. The news outlet filmed him opening the box and because of the suction of the box, the phone fell on the ground on live TV. That video went viral. Starting the next year with the iPhone 6s, Apple started putting the paperwork on top of the iphones in the box, so that it prevented that. They’ve done that on every new iPhone since. So unless the box itself is also changed, I can’t see that 1 slot being for paperwork. Just food for thought anyways!

EDIT: Well I just looked at an iPhone 11 unboxing and Im wrong with the newer models, so just ignore me, sorry

What the h*** do I do with usb-c, with six usb-a bricks?

Buy an adapter for $5 on Amazon, use an existing usb-a cable you already have, or buy a usb-c brick (specifically, a non-Apple version if you want to save a bit of money). It's not that complicated.

Battery operated devices have been shipping "batteries not included" for decades. This is no different. It's not that big of a deal. Personally, I hate that I have boxes full of useless chargers/cables/etc. I'd rather devices not come with any of that crap.

For just $30 more you can buy one of our own Apple branded super duper charging bricks! It's magical!

We'll see what's the answer to those net-new iPhone buyers who don't have accessories from previous phones. I can only imagine an "add-on" option during check out.

Why don't they make another ecological move and make the airpods serviceable by allowing the batteries to be replaced by Apple and thus increasing the life of the product. Why don't they make another ecological move by launching new smartphones once every 2-3 years. Surely they are aware that for some people their products are a shiny status symbol and they will upgrade every year even if by now the smartphone design has matured and the new features are small improvements rather than big breakthroughs? And the list can go on and on.

The Stockholm syndrome sounds absurd until you read some of the posts on this website.
Pretty simple. They can’t make airpods battery removable and also make the device small. It is basically a system in a chip. Everything including the battery is build into it. That’s what enabled the amazing size to features to battery life ratio. It’s was an impossible feet of engines when it was released that took years for the competition to copy. And all you can do is complain about it?
New phones every year is needed to stay in the competition. else apple will go bankrupt. Can’t believe I have to explain such a simple concept. Not everyone upgrades every year and People who upgrade their phones every year, always get a trade in.

Apple does recycle all of its products. iPhones rarely end up in the dumpster. But the chargers do. Don’t worry about the small number of people upgrading the phones every year. Their phones will never cause pollution because they are always traded-in/recycled.
