If they're in a contract they could pay an early termination fee , or do what everyone who had the iPhone4 did when the 4s came out.....live with it and wait until their contract ends.

or if they're running an unlocked phone or are out of contract, sell what they've got and move on.

I don't see why you'd ask such a question.

Not everyone with the iPhone 4 paid the ETF, nor did they all stick to the iPhone 4.

I know a lot paid their ETF, but I also know that for a lot who did, they wish that they hadn't.

That new dock connector must be a Micro USB?

Is this finally comming true?
https://www.macrumors.com/2009/06/2...usb-connectors-for-iphone-charging-in-europe/

I think moving to Micro USB would be awesome. It is the standard and would open the door for new kinds of accessories that work with all sorts of phones and other products.

This is how Apple works, they evolve their designs:

Oh I know how Apple works and how they evolve things... however once every few cycles they come out with something radically new. I guess it isn't this time.

Dimensions and screen ratio

Like lots of other people in this thread, I tried to measure the device from the back plate pictures.

Assumption #1: The new device is the same width as the current 4/4S.

Using the picture of the white back plate (which is less distorted than the pictures of the black), I get a height of 116mm, which is close enough to the current 115mm height.

Assumption #2: The screen of the device covers the entire space suggested by the space between the top and bottom parts in the back plate.

I get a screen aspect ratio of 1.5. The same as the current 3:2.

If I'm right, it makes me happy. As a developer I really don't want a new aspect ratio and as a user I think it's ugly and silly. Lots of downsides, very few upsides.

Maybe the 2 additional colors are solid white and solid black. This makes a lot of sense actually.

1) More fun to tease potential, then show the same old colors
2) Lots of people are careless and shatter the back glass, this new option (while uglier) is for those people

Edit: Looking at the higher rez updated 9to5mac pictures, I like the two tone look and am no longer calling it ugly. I feel less strongly about my post now.

I get the new dock connector, but it sure will trash a bunch of cool accessories like Swivl and others. I'd hope for a very good reason to break from such a established standard. When they went to the dock connector from firewire, there weren't a zillion things affected like now.

Putting the headphone jack on the bottom initially seems good (my HTC's were like that) but I quickly grew to like the current setup because if you put the phone away, upside down, wouldn't the power button get pressed more often?

Or Docked, I liked that you could have an accessory plugged in, like an external mic.

If they made the unibody from metal maybe it's for heat dissipation with LTE radios. I'm sure the end caps are non-metal solely for antenna performance. I hope these new grills aren't lint magnets as these phones are in pockets much more than iPads or laptops and I could see that as an issue.

All in all, I would have no problem keeping my 4s another year should this be just too much of a change. That would send a message (as if...) and at least let the accessory makers catch up.

They have to move on eventually...

What are those holes between the camera and the flash? Possibly the new location of the ambient noise cancelling mic. It would make sense for that mic to face outwards towards where ambient noise would be coming from.

I measured the picture of this iPhone back.

It's

42 mm Width

82 mm Height but it a taken from a good angle so a tiny bit more

82/ 42 = 1,952380952381

iPhone 4s

58.6 mm Width

115 mm Height

115/ 58.6 = 1,962457337884

So, maybe it has the same dimensions.

The 3.5" display lives on? After owning a 4.3" display I'd rather not go back to something that small.

Or maybe it is larger all around and is a bigger screen with the same aspect ratio?

I just dont get why ppl want a redesign every year? Apple is not shamesung or htc releasing new android design phones every 2 months!

Look at this way! Macs dont get redesign every year and they still sale and ppl still love the design over and over again amirite?

Not according to Macrumors' original story. Emphasis mine:

9 to 5 Mac contradicts this, though.

9to5 Mac is closer to the source, MacRumors is just looking at pictures like us. They look like different materials and if the back is aluminium, you still need a plastic/glass section for the cellular radio.

The iPhone 4/4S design looks great, I don't know why they need to deviate greatly from it, just for the sake of being different. Apple's practice is generally to make iterative improvements, people seem to forget this.

It looks great, but when you have the phone 3 years it gets boring. I am sure cars 30yrs ago looked awesome too.

This new iPhone looks completely gorgeous. I'm definitely upgrading to new iPhone when it goes on sale. This will be the most amazing iPhone yet.

I was upgrading no matter what, my 3GS is barely keeping up, but I'm a huge fan of this design too.

It's likely the 2nd mic. That way it not only faces where the ambient noise is coming from, it also faces that way to pick up noise for taking video. Also, you may have noticed Apple is keeping the camera module and the flash separate from the leak we saw. This is likely because the mic is between them.

And judging by the new pictures, assumption #2 is wrong. The screen seems to have a different aspect ratio. Not good.

Why are you comparing a 3 year old design to 30 year old cars? On top of that you don't understand iterative design, 30 years of iteration would yield a completely different product, even if it doesn't look much different from year to year.

Leica cameras from 30 years ago still look good today. They are going for timeless design. Something that will never go out of style.
