Two tone back? Are there even any current smartphone makers that have ventured into such an ugly design?
Sorry, I don't see Apple releasing a two tone color backing. I could be wrong, but I guess we'll see.

HTC regularly do this, the first-generation iPhone 1 had it.

Anyway after reading the first few pages, these are my comments:

I think this is real, the 2 parts from different sources are exactly the same (internal screw mounts in the same places, etc). Nobody goes to this kind of trouble, making a whole fake case this detailed for just a hoax.

I'd say they're manufacturing prototypes, e.g. the design is finalized but the production is being tooled and tested, so there could still be some variances (like the font on the back).

That new dock connector looks suspiciously much like micro-USB, at least the shape of it. Could also explain the move of the speaker to the bottom: As micro-USB doesn't do sound, you could still make a speaker dock with all the contacts on the bottom, there'd just be a micro-USB and 3.5mm jack in the base of the holder. But that would look a bit messy, very un-Apple.

Alternatively it could be that they managed to find some way to add extra contacts to micro-USB so you can charge it with a standard charger but use a dock cable for extra features. It would get them off the hook with the EU directive (standard charging port) without that ugly dongle they've been selling. And it would make sense, in general.

The two-tone back could also indicate a second touch layer at the back, similar to the way the PS Vita has it. The rougher finish would make it easier to move the fingers around and give tactile feedback as to the size of the touch-sensitive area. The Vita also has a different finish on the back. But I do admit that this would be a very geeky feature for an Apple product. Edit: Actually, no that couldn't be. The glass sides are too narrow to hold on to it comfortably while using a rear touchpad.

I think it's Unibody, like 9to5mac is claiming. The glass parts are probably there for the antennas. The grooves in the inside also give the impression that it's been machined.

What about all those who got the iPhone 4, ATT and Verizon? I think it is over 2 years since Verizon got iPhone 4, so, they are ready to upgrade.

In the previous years, AT&T have allowed people to upgrade up to a maximum of 6 months within the termination date.

Connector

I'm sure that the first thing that came up when designing the new connector was about the existing docks/cables that are out there. Apple is selling lots of systems in their store right now with the old type. There will be some cheap connector that will go from micro USB to the existing apple type. And that connector will probably come included with the new iphone. As already stated, it's mandated by the EU.
Basically the opposite of this:

Change the design to what end... change for the sake of change?

Look at other products.... cars - how much do car designs change year to year? About the only thing that changes constantly is women's fashion.

People don't generally buy a car every year though. Also, if you looked at the 1st and 5th generation of a particular car, they'll be very different indeed. Compare the original iPhone to the new iPhone and they're incredibly similar (especially if you lay them flat).

How people stated the same thing last year once part leaks made it clear that the 4S was what we were getting......

If you remember back far enough....

The majority, and I mean THE MAJORITY on these forums were slagging off the iPhone4 design as a piece of cheap Chinese junk when the 1st leaked photo's were posted on these forums.

It was not until it was shown that it was the new official Apple product did many fall in love with it.

I don't know if the thread is still around but it's funny reading it back, how so many were saying how horrid and cheap it looked and Apple would never release just a piece of garbage, and seeing how people NOW say it's a superb design.

Really funny :D

Apple is absolutely retarded to change to an entirely new type of dock connector. They are rendering every single preexisting iPhone cable, charger/battery, dock, speaker set (i.e. modern boomboxes), accessory and car stereo system completely worthless for iPhone 5 buyers...all so the connector port can be 2-3mm smaller/thinner.

Why is Apple like an anorexic teenage girl? Does this port make me look fat?

EDIT:

And this EU "mandate" that all phones can only have a micro-USB port is even stupider. The supposed purpose of the mandate was to reduce electronic waste from people throwing away old chargers when they get new phones. So now, instead of throwing out chargers, people will have to throw out all of their Apple Dock Connector cables, docks, accessories, batteries, chargers, stereos, video connectors, etc... While obviously not everyone has or will have an Apple phone, the Apple dock connector is still extremely popular; it has been around since the 2nd-gen iPod and is used a very large number of devices/cables. Whenever any sort of government attempts to legislate technology or the internet (things that the old, rich oligarchs in power seem to have zero understanding of), they screw it up royally.

I was sort of part of that group.... I questioned the breaks in the steel band saying that wasn't very Apple like to put random lines in their design. Of course at WWDC Jobs revealed that they served a function with the new external antenna.

I regard the iPhone 4 design as the best iPhone design( best smartphone design IMHO). Though I am a bit disappointed in that the only change in design really is sticking a piece of aluminum in between the glass back if these leaks are accurate.... I love the changes( especially with the black version having the antenna black as well), but I was hoping for something more radical like the 3G/S to 4 redesign was.

not if they include an adapter in the box with the phone...

But a lot of accessories (especially car stereos and speaker docks) are designed exactly for the shape of the phone w/ connector--there is no space for a stupid dongle.

Do (most) people not do this already?

Illustrating iPhone 5 placed upside down (screen facing body and back facing away) in trouser pocket with headphones plugged into the bottom of device and cable leading out.

When you reach into your pocket and face the phone towards you, voilà! The screen is in correct orientation.
(Stating the obvious here, tbh.)

technology sometimes has to move on . . . . . .

To those who are worried about the headphone port...

Have you never used an iPod touch? The headphone jack placement is perfect. I love it.

As for this design, looks great. It would really make me consider upgrading from my 4S.

But if something works perfectly and is essentially an industry standard, then why replace it for something that is not superior, just different? I understand technology evolves, but evolution implies upgraded function, not just change for s**ts and giggles.

It's the same thing with the new Macbook Pro. Getting rid of all the standard ports and going with a thunderbolt port only, just so the machine can be 2mm thinner, doesn't provide any sort of "evolved" or increased functionality; it actually removes functionality compared to the current generation.
