For once we can say with true sincerity, "This would never have happened if Steve Jobs were alive."
I feel the exact opposite. I was always surprised Steve didn't kill the chime, especially after the Happy Mac went away.

As much as these things were great, all good things come to an end. Did you really expect the glowing Apple logo and a chime to be present in every macbook forever? They were cool things, but really guys, it's not the end of the world.
Because you so often open the lid on your MacBook to look at a black screen?I really hope there is a way to disable auto-startup. It's a needless convenience.
I understand it's not that big of a deal for many, but for those of us who have been using Macs since the 90s and prior, this is an incredible shame.
Not the end of the world, no… But add a few more of these deductions from the Mac experience and before long, you find the Mac is further from what made it a Mac in the first place - and closer to a generic, bland computer with no character.
What's to stop you from doing that? Don't want to turn the machine on, don't open it. So simple.Automatic startup on lid open is just plain stupid. Wake from sleep, yes, useful. Start-up from off, no. I want to choose if/when I power it on.
