I love hearing my optical drive power up, followed by the chime. I cant imagine owning a Mac that doesn't do that. Apple is making a lot of changes that are removing what I love about their hardware, which sucks. I used to bleed Apple, but it's becoming far less so, which makes me sad.

I loved the little breathing sleep light :)
With the 20% Brexit price increase, this weekend I've decided to keep my old MacBook and buy a Pinarello mountain bike instead. I will not pay a @0% increase - that's corporate greed. So ALL Apple purchases are off the card for me.
Still love my old MacBook and it's got a glowing light and lil breathing light too :) :) :) and MagSafe :)

Well, my Mac never makes the sound during startup anyway, since the audio output is through the external DAC. And I never liked the idea that if I wanted to boot up my mac in secret, someone still might hear it.

That being said, they should make it optional.

For crying out loud, what a lot of whinging over a few small changes?

The modern world is full of, and driven by change - my company frequently states that 'no change is not an option'.

My punt is that 99% of negative comments are from folks who've not even seen a new MBP.

I've not seen one yet I've ordered one, an upgrade to my mid-2012 MPB, confident it will do the job. All this moaning is a flash in the pan and in weeks to come, people will be singing the praises of the latest iteration of a wonderful machine!

There are bigger things in the world than a chime ....

The optical drive powering up, I could definitely do without. I'll be living with that for another year at least unfortunately. But the startup sound is iconic.

I love how Tim Cook has allowed his hundreds of "business units" within Apple strip away everything that made Apple great, unique, and different. It's now a race to the bottom within Apple as it deprecates the desktop computer into oblivion. To hell with the iMac, Mac Mini, and Mac Pro says Tim Cook. To hell with anything that isn't thin and portable and needs more than one connector.

Apple will regret putting all of its eggs into the iOS basket. iPads are tanking and the iPhone is next. Microsoft is innovating circles around Apple with the Surface Pro line, including the amazing new Surface Studio. And I'm a die-hard Apple fan who bought all things Apple until last year. Not anymore.

I think Tim Cook's days are numbered.

I really hope there is a way to disable auto-startup. It's a needless convenience.
Because you so often open the lid on your MacBook to look at a black screen?

No, because it would be really annoying to have to wait for the computer to boot so that I can shut it down again if I accidentally start it by cracking the lid open. I fully acknowledge the first-worldness of this problem.

For real? What is next? They wanna change the Apple logo? Sounds like they want to get rid of all that Steve put his heart into. Wow.

I was defending Tim for years. When everybody wanted Jonny to be the new CEO i was like Tim is the right man. He has the long term vision Steve had. How wrong I was. Tim has his own vision. Its Tims Apple now. I like some things he changed. The most things he changed I hate.

Why does everyone blame Tim for everything? I hear there's a whole Board of Directors he reports to on a regular basis. Why not consider what the bean counters are doing to the company and not put all the blame on their messenger?

Except Steve Jobs insisted they keep the startup sound, and wanted to make sure it was "the good one". He recognized then as now that it's iconic to the Macintosh brand.

In the late 90s. Imagine an iPhone with a startup chime. Apple's about aesthetic over nostalgia, and the startup chime seems completely out of place on a modern Mac.

I really do not like this change. I get it - it may doesn't mean much but to me it was one part of what made my Mac a Mac. The startup chime, the glowing logo and on top of course the breathing light when it was asleep. MacSafe will be missed as well.Oh my. Next goes the Finder smile face change to a plain logo with a directory on it.
