This started when they released the original iPod, iPad and iPhone because they were always in an "on state" with the approval of Steve.
This is the evolution of computers to always be turned on or at least seem to be on.
There may come a day with fuel cells or motion/solar charging that a device will never be able to be turned off.

So even 12" rmb has a leg up over these new pros in that regard? Wow

Feels like they took the 12" design and stretched it to Pro markets. The usbc thing made more sense on a machine nearly as thin as the port. Not sure who they're appealing to here or who asked for this

Even if the panel lid is thinner not having the glow feels inexcusable too and no USB-c type MagSafe feels like a lack of attention to detail and applause for being accident prone

The Apple we knew and love is now dead. RIP Apple.

No Apple logo that lights up, no start-up chime, its just a laptop now, nothing special anymore. This really sucks. Remember that Wall-E had the start-up chime when it rebooted on solar power, this was a tribute to Apple.

Apple's new soul coming through. Don't like it. And bring back the intro song from Leopard too!

There is no soul, that's the sad part.

Well, that chime was awful anyway.

It was 'Apple', didn't matter how it sounds

For real? What is next? They wanna change the Apple logo? Sounds like they want to get rid of all that Steve put his heart into. Wow.
The Apple experience is greater than the sum of parts or features. But yeah... removing the MagSafe power connector really was a stunner.

I agree and with Ive's hand in it, it still is - so long as you don't listen to the miserable sods on here who don't like anything at all.

I was defending Tim for years. When everybody wanted Jonny to be the new CEO i was like Tim is the right man. He has the long term vision Steve had. How wrong I was. Tim has his own vision. Its Tims Apple now. I like some things he changed. The most things he changed I hate.

He probably will replace to Apple logo with a Dollar sign. That's were Tim dreams about at night.

When I recently first heard the "chime", (as it's being politely described), I thought it was an awful, uninspired, noise. So, I'm not sad to see its demise.

But, I hope any error messages or dialogue notifications indicating issues requiring attention will make sense to the ordinary user rather than some terrifying blend of shorthand and tech speak.

THERES NO CHIME IM SWITCHING TO

Oh wait.

Fellas, listen, I agree the chime is part of the Mac experience.

I LOVE IT.

But Apple is changing. What can we do?

Would rather have the New MBPr than a PC

:/

With their internal prototypes of A10 iMac and MacBooks startup time is now almost an instant on so there's no need for startup screens and sounds, just open and go.

They are shifting their identity. Depending on their next move over the next year or so will really show their true direction. This could be a bump in the road, or the reference point for the downslide of their company. They will always be rich, but surely less followers than they have now. They truly want the younger generation though. Though in college and slightly older.

The startup chime gave the Macintosh a better personality than a PC's beep... Which they still use in some cases.

and on top of course the breathing light when it was asleep.

Jony scrapped that YEARS ago.

You do realise that Jony created all these things not Cook and not Jobs. It's him that gets sick of them - I don't think he wants to create something and have it that way forever. Designers like change - not to keep the same thing for 20 years because silly consumers bang on about "tradition"

People say they want a touch screen Mac and yet if we had one this forum would also be full of people complaing Apple was dead and Steve's vision is gone.

If macOS changed to incorporate touch again it would be the same thing - look at the outrage between iOS6 to iOS7 - I don't think you'd find many people choosing to go back to the date aesthetics of 6 anymore (queue someone still clinging onto skeuomorph design)

Things change, ideas become obsolete, better things come along that render the older things not possible anymore - I love the fact that life changes instead of keeping everything the same all the time. I don't think this forum would be happy no matter happened - it was full of moaning that the design hadn't changed for 5 years, now it has it full of people saying "no i didn't want it to change that way" - lets have a day off eh?

I'm a "newer" Mac user (2010 MBP) and have been in love with it. Best machine I ever owned. I used Apple computers back in the day and I too remember the "chime" very well .... and it is a bummer that it's gone. NOW I KNOW it's not something mission critical or important but this (along with other small changes) seems to be another "death of a thousand cuts" of changing the "culture" that made Apple, Apple and made a Mac a Mac.
