Cloud-Focused iOS 5 to See WWDC Intro, Fall Release?

With AT&T's network running SO slow at times, I ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT INSTALL an update which make me use the server farm for streaming my own media.

A lot of people need to calm down.

Do you really think that the cloud update is going to stop you playing media that's already on your phone? Do you think Apple's just going to drop the internal memory?

The cloud option will be just that - an option. You'll still be able to store music and video on your phone. The cloud stuff just extends the possibilities.

There are already multiple iPads.....18 of them to be exact. Why would u think Apple would want to add to this already rediculous number. This whole idea about a iPad pro line needs to stop. It doesn't make sense. It's only 2011. Want an iPad pro.....get an AIR.

If you want to hang 'no iPad 3 in 2011' on the technicality of a slogan, remember: An entire "year" of iPad 2 would have required a launch on New Year's Day, at midnight. That didn't happen. So, a slavish adherence to the slogan is not a reason we wouldn't see an iPad 3 launch in the fall.

In that event, the BULK of the year still would have been the 'Year of iPad 2', if not literally every single day of it. By year's end, it's pretty safe to say the majority of tablets in use will in fact be iPad 2's. That's enough to fulfill the slogan, if such a fulfillment is something anyone's looking for.

With the cloud computing stuff there is too much additional fees. I'm not interested.

I already pay for my hardware that sits in my house.
I already pay for my mobile hardware that goes with me.
I already pay for operating system and other software updates for both.
I already pay my ISP for connectivity.
I already pay my phone provider for connectivity (actually my ISP).
I already pay my web host company for bandwidth and disk space.*
I'm NOT interested in paying Apple another subscription fee on top of all that.

Access to my data from my mobile devices should be transparent and should be part of their shared OS. No need for more billing complexity.

*Why don't I self-host on my home machine? Bandwidth limits of my ISP and the fact that they are a monopoly. A server farm offers orders of magnitude faster connectivity.

Listen, guys. People keep complaining when Apple comes out with new products because they don't have the money to buy it. I'm a Mac addict myself, but luckily I'm not doing quite that bad. The graving we have for Apple products is the best prove that everything Apple does, product launch dates included, is already working perfectly for their financial gain. No reason to question anything, they'll make a killing no matter what.

There is probably some truth in it after all:

The iPhone 5 will come with iOS 5 in June/July and then this fall, we will see iOS 5 for the iPad 2, making it feel like an all new iPad. Perhaps they even call it iPad 3 internally.

This is also a perfectly sane explanation of the rumor of iOS 5 coming this fall - it will be, but it's the iPad version "the source" is talking about.

Yay let us all surrender our privacy to the cloud... Sometimes I feel like the only one that understands the long term implications cloud based computer has when we allow our content and log files on others' servers. Thankfully I know I'm not the only one though.

Nope, not the only one. Boo to the cloud and everything related to it. I'd rather not have all of my data on a massive public server, available to Apple, advertisers and any government agency at all times. Those claiming that "it's encrypted" are not fully appreciating the security implications of not having control over the implementation of said encryption. For example, SSL/HTTPS is "encrypted" as well, but since Certificate Authorities give signed master-key certificates to all government intelligence and law enforcement agencies, it isn't technically 100% secure (despite mathematically unbreakable encryption).

Taking off the tin-foil hat and simply thinking about economics: I still don't understand how cloud computing is actually going to become a dominant market force. There are now only 3 wireless providers in the US, forming a tight oligopoly, and all of them are incredibly stingy with data caps and limitations. Moreover, there are only a handful of unique internet providers in the US and all are cutting client bandwidth, raising prices and instituting throttling or monthly data caps. So it would seem that big software companies like Apple, Microsoft and Google are pushing the idea of streaming everything; but internet providers only want to supply bandwidth for their own cable TV services. Something just doesn't add up. How is one supposed to have no local storage and just stream music and video when their wireless connection only allows for 2GB/month and their home ISP throttles everything other than its own cable TV service?

Problem I have is timing. Why does Apple continue to release the new iPhone / iPad yet we have to wait months afterwards for the iOS update to take advantage of them? Last year it took until November for the original iPad update. Now they're going to offer the iPhone 5 with a several month lag for the iOS 5 upgrade?

Hardware and software have little to do with each other in the large. That is at the low level each new piece of hardware requires it's one special software, but this is low level. The services and functionality rumored to come in iOS 5 are high level abstracted away from the hardware. I would much prefer that Apple took it's time with iOS 5 and actually get it right.

On a side note I could see an iPad 3 in the fall. It wouldn't be a massive upgrade though. As I see a model optimized for 4G coming. There is also the potential for an even lower power variant of A5 coming built on 32/28nm tech. Such a processor would show up in an iPhone first and then move to iPad to replace the big chip there.

Everyone assumes that iPad 3 is a direct upgrade/replacement for iPad 2. This doesn't have to be the case at all. If it is even real, it could be any number of things, it could be sub seven inch, a thirteen inch machine, a machine that supports 4G and Retina or any number of other configurations.

I have no doubt in my mind that Apple will eventually deliver iPads in sizes other than the current model. It only makes sense as it offers solutions for people with different needs. However such a machine (a smaller iPad) needs lower power hardware than what is seen in ipad 2. I believe that hardware is coming for iPhone 5 to allow for the performance boost without killing the battery.

Maybe I'm missing something. I don't get all of the comments that iOS 4.3 is so outdated and in need of a major overhaul. I like 4.3. It works for me.

I like the notification system. An applet pops up when I have a notification and I can choose to ignore it or go into the app for more information. What is wrong with that? I'm all for doing things better and maybe someone can show me a better way.

4.3 is fine the way it is! 5.0 could POTENTIALLY deliver some very nice new features but very few really know what will be in 5.0. I just don't see major GUI changes coming, there will be changes of course but they won't be exploited by developers right away.

all i can say is that it better be good! apple really has to play it's cards right to stay near the top with android. they have a better product really, but android is still overtaking from the sheer number of devices and carriers.

I'm skeptical about any of Apple's "cloud" offerings. They don't do it well at all. Apple is an OS-App-Based company. They have NEVER done anything leveraging the "cloud" well at all. Many, many companies out there run circles around Apple when it comes to the "cloud"....>cough< Dropbox >cough<. I would be surprised (pleasantly) if MobileMe did not have a fee. If they are beefing it up to be "magical" you better believe there will be a fee for that magic! I'd like to see something that blows everyone away. I'm just not counting on it.

If iOS 5 is delayed, it's possible that the iPhone 5 release will be later than June, perhaps September. A slightly improved version of the iPad 2 could also be released around that time, to be sold alongside the current version. September's Apple event could be a lot more than just new iPods.

iPad 2 only just launched yesterday in various other countries. It will most likely sell out there this weekend as well. Most people still have a few weeks to wait for ordered iPad 2's. They can barely meet demand now. App developers have barely even scratched the surface of updating and writing apps to take advantage of all the new goodies in the iPad 2. With the tragedy in Japan, some components are in short supply. iPad 2 has barely gotten out of the gate! With a track record like that for the iPad 2, I just can't see how anyone can believe any type of iPad 3 launch will take place in the Fall. Besides, that's when they launch iPods for Xmas anyway. They already have a product schedule for that window. "2011 is the Year of iPad 2".

Look for iPad 3 March/April 2012.

My thoughts exactly. Our school district (ISD 482) just bought 1,465 iPads for its students, and I can see us getting really mad if Apple were to release a new iPad 6 mos. later.
