Seems like a good idea. Although a different use-case, I can say I miss touchID on my phone in 2020.

i’ve never wholly bought that reasoning: I suspect that the true reason is that the Mac never had the Neural Engine before, which is necessary for Face ID

Windows Face ID works fine on crappy budget laptops. The Kinect 1, which is the same technology as Apple's Face ID sensor, worked great on PCs when it came out in 2010.

It’s been 3 years since Face ID, I would assume that everyone who reads this site knows the difference with Windows Hello, and why the comparison with Windows laptops with slim bezels makes no sense.

Anyway, I think the real reason why it hasn’t been implemented yet is that your face is usually within the IR angle when using the iPhone, while on the Mac it would depend on the opening angle in the case of the laptops. It’d be more feasible on the iMac.

based on ipads code faceid can easly work for macbooks too...on imacs it will be even easier since they dont depend much on thickness , on laptop side they need to have the lid around 5mm thick

Apple could have implemented face authentication based upon the front facing cameras that already exist in their devices, but it is indeed very Apple-like to abstain from releasing a lower end, less secure and cryptographically satisfying form of face authentication on existing devices and instead embark on some far more expensive, laborious r&d to implement the feature correctly. What faceid does with its neural engine and array of sensors is far more sophisticated and secure than windows hello or xbox connect or what android phones do for facial authentication.

Very excited about this, this feature is so much more practical on a laptop/desktop. Windows Hello has been one of my favorite features of the Surface line, and even prompted me to get a fancy Logitech webcam for my desktop.

I like FaceID on my iPhone, but on a bring everywhere device I'd prefer a fingerprint reader; especially now while wearing masks, but also when it comes to more trivial things like just yawning or trying to discretely check your phone beneath a table.

Sounds good for iMacs certainly, wonder if they can figure something out for the Mac Pro and the mini? I also wonder what we will get after FaceID?!

I’m sure Apple will make a big deal and add it to ‘the features’ list. This should have already been implemented by now.

Just remove cameras from the iMac all together and equip new iPhones and new iMacs with strong magnets so you just slap your iPhone on the side like an Apple Pencil. It charges while is able to be used as a webcam.

Can't see the point much. Watch unlock works perfectly before you're even sitting down in front of your mac or before your laptop is fully open, as well as if your laptop is docked

A cool idea would be to use an iPhone's current Face ID to unlock a Mac, kind of like how your watch unlocks Mac now.

Just my completely uneducated idea.
If you have to pull out your phone to unlock your Mac, you are saving no time. And if you already have your phone out, you cannot also look at the Mac too. That’s why the watch unlocking the Mac is still the most elegant and sensible solution assuming you have a watch.

Was Apple just waiting for FaceID on Macs to finally do away with the 720p front-facing camera?
