Huh, so that mockup looks a little different from what I was imagining, but it's still okay I guess.

It does make sense to start out with the iMac though, given that MacBooks already have built-in keyboards.

It's analogous to the iPhone lineup: TouchID for home button phones, FaceID for buttonless.

Hahaha! I can totally see Craig Federighi doing this like he did with introducing Apple Pay for Mac OS.

I'd kind of like TouchID in a keyboard for my office setup rather than FaceID.

FaceID would exclude some folk who work in clamshell mode, as does TouchID now, but I really like the idea of an external keyboard option.

Back in the good old days, if someone wanted my password they would have to beat it out of me, and they wouldn't succeed. Nowadays, thanks to Apple, all they have to do is cut off my finger. With this new "advancement" now they also have the option of cutting off my head. Apple is making my life fraught with new dangers never before possible ;-).
Careful, a lot of really literal people in the world that don’t speak sarcasm.

Me too, if only as an after market, USB port or Bluetooth add-on. It is possible. We have it with the Apple Watch.

Coming in the new Apple Silicon Macs (only). According to Apple it’ll take about two years to implement across the lineup. Completely expected.
Apple is becoming as slow and lethargic with innovative product development as Xerox PARC was when Jobs co-opted their mouse pointer idea that revolutionized computing.

iMac will be one of the last to transition, 2022 almost certainly. Maybe the smaller screen model will come out earlier.
And USB 4/Thunderbolt 4. Come on Apple, get out in front and lead again!

What’s important too though is that personal computers are, more often than not, used by more than one person. We need a computer integrated Face-ID that supports more than 4 People, with and without glasses. If you Apple can’t do that stick with a Touch ID sensor that can until you have the security silicon that will.

I could imagine the iMac would be one of the first, it was one of the earlier Intel machines as it gets the most people over, or did at the time. If they do the MacBook Air first it'll get in peoples heads that it is a lower end chip.

better be right in front of the screen or won’t work. Too far away won’t work. Just right like the iPhone. Anybody else growing to hate faceid for when you aren’t holding your phone directly in front of your face?

I wish Apple would unify its product line instead of breadcrumbing its client base over the course of 5 years. I'm glad they seem to be favoring stability over rushing out with glitter and yoyos, but how many times do people need to sit through the same "wow?"-factor of a re-introduction of technologies that have existed in production for 5 years?

I was kinda holding out for FaceID on my MacBook Pro when I bought the 2018 model (I had a 2011 model beforehand) but really touch ID is fine, most of the time it unlocks based on my Apple Watch anyway. Also when I go to use my MacBook my hands are already on the keyboard area. Still FaceID would be better.

It makes sense to put it in the iMac as Apple often likes to flex with that one. I think it's unlikely though that any AppleSi computer will not have FaceID aside from MAYBE the Mac mini. (Even then, I see them either unveiling a new external monitor designed for consumers to pair with the mini and Macbooks that has FaceID) Even with the mini though they could position a FaceID projector on the front and just tell you that if you want to use Face ID you should position your Mac mini so that it can see you.

I think it's unlikely that the iMac is the only AppleSi Mac they'd unveil. They're almost certain to have a version of the 13 inch MacBook Pro (probably the whole laptop line up) as laptops made up 80% of Apple's sales all the way back in 2017.

Also for those who think the FaceID projector is thick, it really isn't. Look at a teardown picture. Also Apple doesn't have to place it beside the webcam. They could easily redesign the hinge/vent area on the MacBook Pro and position the dot projector down there. It just needs to scan a distinct part of your face, your double chin and nostrils would probably be fine for the scan. :)

I appreciate your frustration to their iterative approach. For example the iPhone 12 is going to have design language that's been on every version of the MacBook Pro since they went unibody, and has been on the iPad Pro since 2018, and still isn't on the Apple Watch. (Oh can you imagine how crazy people are gonna go when a boxy Apple Watch is released?)

On the other hand, Apple sometimes backs away from design ideas that aren't popular. Aren't you glad their whole laptop line didn't go Butterfly right away? Aren't you glad that every product didn't go portless when the watch did?

Wouldn't they have to upgrade those absolutely terrible "iSight" webcams then? That'd ruin the margins.

Can't see the point much. Watch unlock works perfectly before you're even sitting down in front of your mac or before your laptop is fully open, as well as if your laptop is docked

Convenience? You have to wear a watch but you are already wearing your face.

Now that ARM Macs are coming, if they don't need active cooling I can totally see an iMac with iPad Pro shape coming. With Face ID on the thin bezel, and speakers at both sides. I can see it happening yeah.

If new ARM Macs need active cooling, well, it's not so easy to implement.

Laptops need active cooling and they're way thinner than any desktop needs to be. Another fact being the Pro Display XDR needs active cooling and it's got a thin bezel.

I really miss having TouchID on my iPhone, It was so convenient and I didn’t need to look directly at the screen to unlock it.. For the Mac having FaceID to login multi users to their own account is a brilliant idea so does having TouchID identifier to do that too.. But I guess they need something for the ARM Macs to have 🤷🏻‍♂️

Do you think Apple will eventually stop requiring users to come up with passwords and use biometric authentication from start to finish? I assume the bad user passwords are a vulnerability. Is there something preventing the elimination of typed passwords or good reasons to keep using them forever?

Mark my words - FaceID Macs in 2021. The pandemic has delayed everything, so they were supposed to come out this year, but instead, they will come out next year. Probably still 1H21, but maybe around March (if we are lucky) or most likely, June 2021, at WWDC '21.

You will need passwords in case of false positives.

I'm not surprised at all. Fully expected apple to bring Face ID over to the Mac. I'm sure this will be part of the new variants with apple chips or soon after. Once I saw the ability to edit Memoji coming to the Mac I figured the time was close.
