Didn't read the article? This is ColorWare's product, not Apple's.

LOL. Who didn't read the article? They buy Apple's Airpods and PAINT them for you. I'd hardly call that ColorWare's product....

Geeze, does no one do HOBBIES anymore? I was joking about the Earl Scheib thing. It should actually cost you LESS than $19.95! It's just paint for god's sake! You can BUY any kind of spray paint you like and paint them yourselves. I used to build model rockets and paint them all the time.

You'll need some extra fine sandpaper (to rough up the plastic white coat) and some painter's tape (masking tape will do for this little thing).

Sand down the white paint and then mask off the ends and do a light spray. Wait for it to dry and rotate and apply a coat to the other side and wait and decide if you want more coats and/or clear coat (clear coat is probably recommended since wearing these things in your ear on a regular basis might take its toll on a light coat of paint with body oils and PH acid levels, etc.). The whole process should take a few minutes here and there over the course of a day or two and you can paint them camouflage or rainbow colored if you like and have the patience/skill to play with it. It might cost you $12 for the sandpaper and spray paints and you won't use hardly any of it so you can do your friends' airpods next and charge them $50 a pop which still sounds better than what they're charging. You might want to practice on some regular earpods first (people will give them away; I know I hate mine).

WARNING: If you've never painted anything in your life you might frack up your Airpods.... It probably will void your warranty too.

ColorWare, a company that custom paints Apple products, today announced that it is now accepting orders for Apple's AirPods, which can be purchased from the site in range of different colors.

For $289, a $130 premium over the $159 price of the AirPods, ColorWare will paint them in one of 58 different shades, from solids to metallics in every color of the rainbow. A deep glossy black is also an option, giving customers who have been wanting a "Jet Black" set of AirPods a way to get it.

Each AirPod can be painted in a different shade, and for an extra $30, ColorWare will also paint the AirPod Charging Case. Along with a custom color, users can also choose a matte or gloss finish, for a set of AirPods that are totally unique.

To paint various products, ColorWare fully disassembles them and carefully custom paints each individual component. On its Twitter account, ColorWare says developing a process for the AirPods was "FAR from easy."

The total price for a fully customized set of AirPods plus case is $319, which is about double the price of a plain white set of AirPods purchased from Apple. In addition to shelling out quite a bit of money for a custom set, those who order AirPods from ColorWare will also need to wait for approximately six weeks for their order to arrive. ColorWare often lets customers send in their own devices to be painted, but this isn't currently an option with the AirPods.

Because $319 is a lot of money to shell out for an accessory, ColorWare does offer paint samples so users can test colors out before placing an order. Each set of three paint samples costs $15.

All ColorWare work is guaranteed for 12 months, and 24 months with the purchase of an additional warranty. Returns are available for the first 30 days but are subject to a 25 percent restocking fee.

ColorWare paints a range of devices, from iMacs and MacBooks to Apple accessories like the Magic Keyboard and the Magic Mouse 2. The company also paints other accessories, like game consoles and headphones (including Beats), plus it offers a range of skins for products like the MacBook and iPhone.

"Dumb enough to pay that"....who are you to decide or judge what people do with their own money?

I too find it not worth the cost, but that doesn't mean others can't see value in it. Or maybe they have disposable income to spend - which is good for them.

In any case, judge less.
this is the thing

the average person would consider anybody who pays 700-800 for a phone as dumb or anybody who even thinks about upgrading anything but every two years as dumb.

everybody enjoys using their money how they wish and it's not dumb at all

ColorWare has been around for a long time. I remember drooling over the idea of getting a red and white MacBook back in 2006. But I couldn't justify spending that much on color.

This is a great post. This easily clarifies and backs up Colorware is reputable and knows what they're doing.

If a company like Colorware can execute a task of customizing a product like the Airpods to a specific color not available from The manufacturer and someone finds appeal in this, then I say go for it. Everyone is different and everyone has different appreciations.

300 bucks... for a colour? The sad thing is, there are some people dumb enough to pay that.

Yup and probably a bunch of them are on this forum.

When you can buy a back up pair (for work, car, gym bag or wherever or if your first pair break or gift for someone or use the money on something useful) for an extra $29 instead of getting a painted pair kinda seems dumb to me. +$30-$50 then I maybe get the business model. $130 really?

There are many, many people out there where those two things are not mutually exclusive. People that have enough disposable income to spend $300 bucks on a set of headphones, or $600 on two sets of them, without even blinking.

Yes, for some people, spending that much on earbuds would be too much of an impact on their finances: for them, it's not a good idea. But people shouldn't assume that just because it would hurt for them to spend that much on a set of earbuds doesn't mean it would for everyone else.

We all live in our own, sometimes very different, financial realities. We shouldn't denigrate others just because their realities are different than our own.

They look great!

Expensive, but if you are going to wear them for hours everyday, it's not that much to fuzz about.

If you live in an industrialized country, you are likely to make at least 130 bucks a day. So is it worth 8 hours of work to get a nice color?

That forum member wants other members to respond to his negative rhetoric. Add him to your ignore list. It's not worth even responding to someone like that and you have to outsmart him. I don't disagree with you though.

On Topic: I could easily see someone taking advantage of The colored Airpods. If the company is reputable and someone has the money to do so, why not.

ColorWare has been around for a while.

Why didn't apple think of this ? I mean didn't they introduce the industry to the rainbow of colorful music players with the iPods. They just seem to not get the simple things.

Because Apple want to sell Airpods 2 where they offer three colors and then Airpods 3 with eight new colors. It's not about making great products, it's about selling more products and making stock owners happy.

Tbh, given the amount of work involved here, I can't be the only one that doesn't see this as being bad value?

The moment you customise *anything* you pay a lot more, and $130 for the amount of time it must've taken them to work out the process, disassemble, paint and reassemble them isn't bad in my book.

Agreed. It's (relatively) niche and looks to be a very professional job. I've always liked their work, just never jumped on board as import duties make it a touch too rich for my blood. The retro painted PS4s look incredible. Everyone wants something for nothing these days, and it's a shame because it's killing companies that do unique and high quality work.

Too expensive, In couple of years Apple will give them for free with new purchase. I would be interested in Gold or chrome. I do not know, but Tims political **** starts me to hate Apple.

Colors would be really nice, but these just look cheap. Reminds me of the fake EarPods in colors that Chinese sellers ship out. Might pay $25 for a quick personalization in a mall booth or something, but that's an insane price to pay.

$300 put them in a market with a lot of nice headphones. Do Airpods work with any Bluetooth device or are they Apple only? If Apple only $300 seems a bit much

I wish someone would invent that electronically controlled paint/enamel - remember the fingernail polish for the gal in the Recall office in the original Total Recall Movie? Even better, 'hey Siri, change AirPod color to bright red'....:)

The way most companies' marketing strategy works these days, they'll offer this, for a base fee. You'll then need to buy each individual colour (4,294,967,296 different colours available!) as an In-App purchase at $4.99 / £4.99 / €4.99 each!

I didn't check the site, but wouldn't that paint job invalidate the apple warranty? Especially since the article mentions they need disassembly to be painted.

lol They are on something, the price is insanely high. Rather get some skins for less than 15.00.. heck I can spray paint mine for cheaper if need be.
They are on TO something, not on something. These will sell and the guys selling them will make an insane ROI.

its funny because people complained about airpods price, now you will pay the same just to change the color.
I can see al the rich kids, and women married to rich men doing this.
