This is a really cool idea. Honestly, I almost want to say that Apple should have offered this, not a third party company. I see other manufacturers (think about the Moto x) offering customization options for their products. It'd be cool if Apple ever got to that point.

Customization isn't very "Apple," but on the other hand the idea of four different iPhone colors as well as three different iPhone sizes would have sounded crazy four years ago. And there's supposedly a fifth color on the way (red). So who knows.

But does it void your (1 year) Apple warranty?

It's a modification so of course. However, Colorware offers its own warranty to replace Apple's so the main difference is you can't walk into an Apple Store to do a warranty exchange and you can't add it to AppleCare.

Putting on my psychologist hat I would deduce that people who protest so wildly about overpriced coloured airpods are negatively criticising them to make themselves feel better about not being able to afford them.

Well it's a good thing you're not a psychologist.

I don't need to feel better about myself, I'm happy that I'm smart enough not to piss away $290 on headphones that will sound like garbage when there's a whole world of amazing headphones in that price range.

I absolutely can afford these color airpods. Instead i own Bose QC35's which are just a bit more expensive. They're large and not for everyone, but there are plenty of tiny and fantastic headphones in that price range. The airpods aren't one of them.

"let alone ugly air pods"

You mean the AirPods that have been constantly sold out, with delivery now quoted as mid-April, due to enormous demand?

Nice that you are so much smarter than most. Hope that makes you feel good about yourself!
I bought them even though I think they are ugly.

No its normal for me (I'm used to the feeling), sell out? How many they make come on now.
They ARE ugly, people look ridiculous with them on and if I see them i will point and laugh at them
Thank you bolt man. You are the voice of reason amongst all of this chaos.

Whenever I see these things, I can't help but think of "ooh, hair gel" ...

that's crazy money they want just to paint the ear phones.
simply not worth it even if one hates white AirPods for some weird reason.

You don't have to believe me or the number.

If you think Apple's manufacturing rate supplies 3-5 AirPods to each store daily, and that makes for a sustainable business case for that product, well, that certainly speaks volumes about your business acumen.

There are 490 Apple retail stores worldwide and the AirPods have been on sale for 64 days. At 300 units per store per day, that is 9,408,000 AirPods excluding online and through other retailers. It's not completely outside the realm of possibility for an Apple product, but extremely unlikely. Taking a few (three) zeros off and saying 3-50 units per day per store seems much more plausible to me.

All that said, the reason I see your post as completely fictitious is the fact that you said your Apple store gets AirPods daily. While possible for a few flagship stores, it doesn't make any logistical sense. Larger, but fewer shipments do. To support this I'd point out that no store within 1000km of me expects to have AirPods in stock before April.

Why didn't apple think of this ? I mean didn't they introduce the industry to the rainbow of colorful music players with the iPods. They just seem to not get the simple things.
I am sure Apple thought about it, but they just want to release one color first, make sure that the technology works first, may be next generation they will add more colors.

Nope, paying almost double for a colored version of an over priced hipster fashion accessory is absolutely dumb.
Just because you don't like it doesn't mean that every other person shouldn't like it, options are always better.

No they aren't , first off the base air pods are sold at a ridiculous price , so never should anyone encourage more ridiculous cost by having them painted . Besides they are really ugly looking.

Right now add up all the apl stuff you have bought over your lifetime now add $130 for extra color . look at your life ,look at the cost.

Options are not always good, high prices are not always good in fact all of this is somewhat a thing we call ...consumerism and abusive margins...not good bad for society. People need to say no to this stuff.
IPhone at full MSRP is one thing , then its gets even more ridiculous

300 bucks... for a colour? The sad thing is, there are some people dumb enough to pay that.

300 bucks... for a colour? The Good thing is, there are some people Rich enough to pay that. And if you are rich you should spend. It makes someone's living. I mean, what else you going to do with that much anyway. Enjoy the wealth, i'd say.

So you are suggesting the rich buy ugly air pods? Really thats your plan?
Oh the rich so lucky to have your "advice"

I would venture hardly any rich person even touches an airpod ever, let alone a painted one.
Lets have some chip their thoughts. I already did.

Most rich don't spend on useless stuff like this. Sort of how they got rich by making better decisions, ya think?

Mr lives surely you are reasonable enough to realise that everyone is entitled to appreciate creativity through their own perspective and experience ? You deem the pods ugly. Others cool and futuristic. Let's be more open to accepting each other's likes and dislikes. That's how wars begin.

Nice straw man you have created there, projecting what I was told at one Apple Store, in the middle of Silicon Valley no less, to all Apple Stores, in order to come up with a number you could claim to be extremely unlikely and try to tear down.

And you have conveniently ignored the fact that Apple also sells AirPods at Best Buy, Target, and other retail outlets.

Also... you might not understand that taking a couple zeros off 300-500 results in 3-5 units, not 3-50.

Completely fictitious? In the San Francisco Bay Area each store gets deliveries every day. And quickly sell out. Before you call someone a liar, perhaps you should verify what was said. It's easy enough to do. And most importantly, not make uniformed projections across all Apple Stores, based up the demands of a single Apple Store.

The only way to snag a pair is to check online availability from time to time during the day looking for a local store to show available and quickly place an order for in-store pickup.

Man you kumbya'd me brutal ..ok lets all get along . I support your decision even if you or anyone wants to wear ugly expensive air pods and spend a lot for someone to paint them..

I got a set of black AirPods with a black case back in July for $249. And they are great for fitness too, including swimming and biking.

They're called The Dash by Bragi.

Good luck to anyone who wants these and can afford them. It does seem silly Apple doesn't offer them in at least black as well as white, but if they're as successful as Apple have indicated it can surely only be a matter of time until they expand the range of colours they provide themselves.
