I don't have a problem with the 16:9 screen. It'll be beneficial in just about any app. As if 100 pixels wider would make a dang difference in browsing the web  Face it, mobile phones work best with mobile sites. People who view desktop sites on their phone and then come here to complain how much it sucks are just displaying their ignorance. Yes, it sucks. It'll suck on any phone but the roof tile sized models.

I'd prefer the same size as the 4/4s with a 4" screen, but that doesn't seem to be in the cards. I'd buy this easily though. It's barely larger and will most likely be thinner as well. I doubt these mockups have anything to do with Apple trying to pull the wool over our eyes, but we'll see.

Props to the OP on a great thread idea. Hopefully, this will also give the Mods a place the move the dozens of similar threads that will inevitably pop up.

Yea, that mock up of the 4" screen on the iPhone 4/4S is pretty sweet. Bigger screen but the phone is the same size, I would take that.

As much as I do not like the idea of making it taller, there is three things I REALLY like about the mock ups (Mainly the ones on the wood floor, looks like a deck maybe):

1: I think the darker bezel with matching volume, and lock buttons looks AWESOME on the black phone

2: I think the bottom of the phone looks great as well, the mini dock connector, head phone jack, and speakers look super clean

3: I kind of like only having the lock button on the top now that I think about it. Although, it does mean the bottom of the phone cases will need to be more open, which could be a downside.

I like the design of the iPhone 4/4S... So I dont care if they keep the same body like in the parts leaks and rendered photos. But, I would it to be bigger than those. I would prefer the same aspect ratio, but I would be okay with 16x9 if the phone was around 4.5" like the Galaxy SII was.

I look the look of the renders, and that two-tone metal back is damn classy. I just can't get over the idea of a 16:9 4" screen - If Apple had gone with that design but with a 4.7"/4.8" screen I'd been all over it.

I don't understand how people keep wanting a bigger screen in the same footprint, yet complain that all the concepts have a 16:9 ratio. Take a look at your iPhone 4/4S; there's not much room left on the sides. Face it, how often do you scroll horizontally on your phone?

In my opinion, it makes perfect sense to elongate the screen.

I think 16:9 will suck for pictures as you'll have large unused spaces at the top and bottom (in portrait) and tell me how you will have ANY useable space in landscape with the keyboard up. Maybe they will make the center section text and do a split keyboard on the sides.

It is hardly "the same old phone" when the internals are significantly updated
And I, for one, have really enjoy the design of the 4 and 4s and prefer it to offerings from other vendors

I will reserve judgement on the long phone until I see it and hold it myself
But I am not opposed to the same basic design because I don't need it to be different/new

On a separate note, I find it interesting how last year everyone was saying "the only thing I want is a bigger screen" and that specs were unimportant

This year, everyone is saying the 4" screen is insignificant and it better have this or that spec

Shrug
You've made some good points which I respect, and do not disagree with.

We all have different preferences, and tastes. If we speak of shape only, I found the 3GS one of the very best iPhones in terms of comfort when on long calls, or simply using it in hand for a longer period of time.

While I do like the "at a glance" look of the iPhone 4 & 4S, once you pick it up, it's rather blunt sides and flat back, make it far less comfortable to hold. The test of time has taught me the importance of good ergonomics when one is using the phone. From the standpoint of a more secure grip, to the fact that unlike the phone our hands are not flat and robotic.

Therefore a phone with a shape comprised of compound curves, slight styling cues, and designed for comfort, makes quite a positive impression.

Finally as someone in business with some manufacturing and design experience, I understand the compromises that need to be made to meet the various criterion that exist as a result of competition and cost control.

At the end of the day, if a company can continue to re-use the same design, even if minor modifications are involved, the profit soars once the tooling is paid for. After that it's like a Las Vegas slot machine that pays back huge amounts to it's owner.

Apple's cash cow is fatter than ever, the pride of Apple, now all they have to do is milk it.

I see a lot of people saying that the 4" screen as is being achieved based on rumors/leaks is insignificant. This 4" screen has a great deal less usable area than do practically all other 4" options currently on the market.

I am wondering if we get some now "killer feature" that utilizes this very specific extra segment of space. Otherwise I ask "what's the point?"

I really like the longer screen!

I'm not a fan of the dark antenna on the black iPhone, I think it looks a little cheap, however the white one looks very sexy!!

I also hope they keep the headphone jack at the top.

A refresher from another angle.

It would be a dang shame if all we get is a space for iAds and/or a touch/nav space. I just don't see a use for only going taller at all.

It would, unless they plan to give the phone to me contract free, and perhaps pay ME for using ads. Of course this won't happen, though I remember when Google announced they'd be launching Android this was the sales model that some were speculating on.

If it does just become taller I'll be a bit upset.

If it just becomes taller AND they just add an extra row of icons in the extra space I'll cry :/

Seems like such a waste!

How would you use a keyboard in landscape with the phone being so tall!!

Those renders looks really odd. I really hope Apple doesn't come out with what mounts to just a stretched recycled 4S design. I want Android manufacturers to get pushed, and this certainly doesn't do it in the least.
So someone tell me, exactly why is this phone getting longer? The 4S has so much wasted space on the front that Apple should be able to get a 4 inch screen without even stretching the physical length at all. If the speculation is true, then this will be one odd ball looking device. LongPhone indeed. LG Chocolate anyone? It also has a 4 inch screen. lol.

From the most innovative tech company this would be a disappointment. If this long iPhone turns out to be true it'll likely be the iPhone for the next 2 years too. Quite a commitment.

I really don't see the benefit to stretching the screen taller. I'm cool with them putting a bigger screen on the iPhone, but not in that fashion. There are a lot of things about these rumors that are hitting me the wrong way. I look forward to the unveiling in a couple months so we can finally figure out whether or not Tim Cook has gone insane.
