The smartphone landscape has changed pretty dramatically in the last year, so past results are not worth much at this point. It's encouraging however that it appears that the screen will be both wider and taller. If that's the case, it will make a big difference. It might even bring me back. ;)

I still think we are off topic about what really matters in this next phone. I think it's a crucial release for apple. Having 4S last year allowed competitors to catch up and some ways surpass them. With the iPad they have done a far better job of keepin distance in the market place. So I think we have a big moment for iPhone coming and design is strictly a individual preference. what will put apple in drivers seat again?

Because the iPad has obliterated every Android tablet today. The Android tablet experience doesn't compared to that of an iPad. An iPad mini will allow Apple to further dominant the market.

It'd be third year of the same design if they don't change it. What is Jony Ive doing...oh wait, he's busy at the courts:rolleyes:

Tell me...what should it *really* look like? I'm curious.

All Apple simply HAD to do with this update was bring a modern sized screen to the table. Why are you forcing me leave Apple???!!!!

many consumers don't want a larger screen, obviously they can't please everyone, and I don't necessarily think making the screen much larger than 4" benefits them as the average user is not using a smartphone for what a smartphone should be used for. Let's be honest, the best selling apps are games not productivity apps. Turn the taller phone sideways and your angry birds can fly that much further.

Nobody gives a **** about the hardware. It's going to look like a rectangle with a glass plate, no matter what anybody does, Apple or otherwise.

There is nothing they can do to make the hardware "exciting" without making radical changes to iOS - that's why iOS is, really, the only thing that matters. So far, there's nothing about iOS6 that looks particularly dramatic - maybe they're holding something back and that changes - time will tell.

All signs point to: Meet the new phone, same as the old phone.

I'm sorry.. How does hardware not matter?? This isn't android we're talking about here..

They could start with hacking away at that God awful bezel, making it comfortable to use as...an...omg...phone.

It would have been nice if they could have maintained the same dimensions of the current model with the addition of the larger screen. I'm not sure I like this, the point was for the phone to be compact wasn't it?

Apple is not [forcing], you just think you know better than Apple! :D

Do I have to explain what a metaphor is?

I guess so. Forcing, by which I mean they are not going to be offering a phone comparable to other top of the line smart phones. Forcing in the sense that I'd love to stay with Apple if they offered something better than the competition.....

For example, the Note 2 is supposed to be coming out at the end of the month. It has a rumored 5.5 inch screen and a stylus. 5.5 actually kind of scares me, but I love the idea of a stylus. And the S3, already out, is more comfortable to hold than my iPhone due to the ergonomics, and the screen is MUCH better.

And no, I don't know more than Apple, which isn't a real animal that can be said to have intelligence. I do feel like Apple's made a strategic decision to go with a small screen rather either for more profit or to protect the iPad mini.

Really no different from OS for the Mac. I hope you don't fall into massive depression every time they release a new animal that looks basically the same as the previous OS.

If you need your phone or the OS to excite you, you probably need to get out more often.

I just can't shake the feeling that it looks really awkward with that aspect ratio... Perhaps it won't be so bad when you hold the thing, after all, apple would have presumably done a lot of testing before deciding to change it.... But, i would have been so much happier if they just made it bigger on both axes!

The bezel is for asthetics, and holding a brick up to your ear is not fun.

Ok, find me a phone on the market today with absolutely no bezel.

Reply when you find one like this:

Isnt that why people camp out for days? I would say those people need their phone to excite them. Thats an awful large amount of people.

I couldn't find the post you quoted....but you do know that apple copied stuff too right?

*cough* Notifications *cough*

*cough* camera access on home screen *cough*

list goes on

You're more than welcome to list that list and surely if its an infringing patent they'll cross that bridge when they get to it.

iPad changed a lot from the first iPad to iPad 2. It became much thinner with addition of cameras. The third was thicker then 2 but they changed the display o high resolution. So they have been far more aggressive each year in the iPad. Thus has helped keep its distance.
Is the question about what it should look like for me?

Many consumers don't want a larger screen????? Tell Apple, they're making a bigger screen too. This is Apple cult-speak. It's like a Scientologist defending E-meters.

The problem is that Apple is making theirs only a tiny bit larger, and not in a way that adds to any utility. (Excepting small improvements with some games as you mention.)
