As much as I'm ready to accept this as the next iPhone, I really do hope Apple have something up their sleeves to surprise us on September 12th. Cook did say they would triple down on leaks, but it seems this year there's been more leaks than ever before.

We'll see.

Many consumers don't want a larger screen????? Tell Apple, they're making a bigger screen too. This is Apple cult-speak. It's like a Scientologist defending E-meters.

The problem is that Apple is making theirs only a tiny bit larger, and not in a way that adds to any utility. (Excepting small improvements with some games as you mention.)

iSheep love dem some Angry Birds!

iPad changed a lot from the first iPad to iPad 2. It became much thinner with addition of cameras. The third was thicker then 2 but they changed the display o high resolution. So they have been far more aggressive each year in the iPad. Thus has helped keep its distance.
Is the question about what it should look like for me?

Well the first iPad didn't have camera or a high-res display, so essentially they had no choice but to add both. The iPhone had a camera in the first model and the iPhone 4 gained a front camera and high res display. Now that it already has stuff like that, internals are the only things they can really revamp (aside from improving the camera optics, etc).

I think if Apple can make the design thinner and lighter (which it should be with a metal back), hopefully make the home button and battery still accessible and replaceable, then they will certainly be onto a winner again.

As for the hardware, better camera lens or module, that 4" screen which should have the same PPI as the current 3.5" and make it a bit brighter, would all be great.

I will be interested to see what CPU and GPU they use though as they are getting hammered in that area, especially the CPU.

not too fussed about the dock connector luckily.

I hate to say this, but so far I really dislike what I see. I think 3.5'' screen size is perfect (it certainly is for me!) and making it 4'' only by adding height is just lame and makes for ugly device.

I'm thinking for getting 4S instead of waiting for this.

Give it a break

seriously do we really need to know EVERY single possible detail about the next iPhone or whatever product before its launch?? How bout you just let the Sept 12 event happen and move on to other stories. What is the point of this?

When the first iPhone was launched. I was amazed on how advanced the new cellphone era was going. Then the Google G1 showed up. It was ugly as hell but offer me more options. So I ended up buying the G1. Today I own an HTC EVO am I happy how much Android has improved and how much I can do with it. Today Apple iPhone finally has a complete phone with all the features I was looking for. My next phone will be an iPhone. This is the phone I was looking for.

Steve would have never allowed this, and after Tim saying he was doubling down on security, i seriously don't think this will be the new iPhone at all, we will all be amazed on Sep 12th.

lets hope you are right, but I am seriously doubting that we see anything different.

You're really not a long-time Apple user, are you? Apple keeps their product lines CLEAN and SIMPLE. They don't add fluff for the sake of adding fluff, that's not their strategy, but that easily happens on completing [Android] platforms because those companies are desperate to differentiate themselves from each other. Apple only has to complete with itself on most levels.

If you're interesting in a messy product line with lots of bells and whistles, then go Android. What's stopping you? It's there waiting for you. If you want a clean, simple, well-designed and well-executed platform that just works, then iOS/iPhone is a great choice, as voted on by millions of wallets around the world.

If you have suggestions for Apple, then don't waste your time here. Put them in writing at www.apple.com/feedback/

Yes fair enough. I have an iPhone 4 and a couple Apple computers, and I do enjoy the simplicity and the "it just works". I enjoy the efficient syncing over iCloud and having all my devices in constant motion with each other.

What I was trying to point out, is why buy the iPhone 5 when you have an iPhone 4S (or even the 4)? The iPhone is a hugely expensive product and I expect great pieces of technology to justify a price tag of £400. I simply cannot see a reason to upgrade, as it appears to me that Apple are just adding little bits here and there, nothing particularly groundbreaking and certainly nothing particularly attractive. That isnt the innovative company that many of us have come to love, a company which pushes technology to its limits or sets new records. Right now, there are better Android phones on the market, and I imagine when the iPhone 5 comes out, there will still be better Android phones on the market. In my view, the iPhone should be the "ultimate" phone like it was a few years ago. It just isnt anymore, its crown has been taken.

Really no different from OS for the Mac. I hope you don't fall into massive depression every time they release a new animal that looks basically the same as the previous OS.

That's a good way to look at it.

The smartphone market has already started to resemble the desktop market, in the sense that the big changes are behind us, and most of what's left are evolutionary changes in a relatively stable, proven framework.

IMO the smartphone market is past peak, in terms of generating market excitement, and what we're really looking for is something completely different. I'll go so far as to predict a relatively muted "lining up and camping out" response to iPhone 5.

"I don't want a bigger screen"

So, for two years--at least--we've heard apologists repeat this like a mantra. Now Apple comes out with this taller screen that makes the phone look odd and seems to add no utility...and still we get the same claims about the wonderful glory of the tiny screen. It just occurred to me what this reminds me of.

The small-screener Apple apologists are just like all those people who used to say they were happier with their dumb cellphone. You don't much hear it anymore as most everyone appreciates how great smartphones are, but it's the same sort of logic.

Sayings that made/make no sense:

"I just use my phone to call people, I don't need to browse the web on my phone and email."

"Why do I need a bigger screen?"

I'm really excited about the taller screen but I have a question –*when the phone is in landscape mode with the keyboard up, how big will the keyboard be?

If they scaled it up there would be very little left to show the rest of the screen. If they stretched it out the buttons would look funny. Maybe they would add some buttons to the landscape keyboard... but what buttons?

Good question. Surely if the screen size increases, then the keys should be able to be slightly bigger?

i want a wider screen. i just want a bigger device. longer will probably be a no go for me and i might try out the S3.

that being said, i am going to wait for this iPhone 5 before i make my final decision

I'm pointing out how Apple isn't the only company that has a device with a "tired design".
What does that have to do with anything? Is this your best argument? Samsung has "tired designs" so it's okay for Apple?

I believe that a company would over a 100 billion in pure cash, should be able to deliver a phone which makes you think: "Wow."

don't make apple have a bad image to people who really don't know much about hardware.

Why? It is the people who don't know much about hardware who have the main buying power. If we get them on Apples bad side, they might actually start innovating mobile phones again.

change

Then why are all these rumors so consistent? If this ends up being the next iphone, which it will, many including myself will be very disappointed. Why do they feel they don't have to change anything drastically? And yes it needs it.

How do you change the best, most popular and successful phone on the planet? Like the Porsche 911; incrementally, deliberately, carefully. Refinement and planning are key. That's how you build a great product and a great brand.

You do realize that these "high-res" displays are completely useless, since unless you are a nearsighted geek who looks at the screen from 2", you can't see pixels anyway.

It's the same with all the idiots in the video world, who keep insisting that you have to buy a 4k-ready AVR, even though they'll hook it up to a 50" and sit 12' from it (at which distance 720p would be enough).

It's meaningless numbers.

Are you suggesting that only people with bad vision can appreciate the increased level of detail?

That's not my point. My point is it's OK for SAMSUNG to have the tired designs but NOT Apple? That seems to be what everyone is getting at.
